NOOL Day 2007 - yes or no?

As you all probably know, last year's event was not without its problems. I still haven't had the remaining £150 from ULU that they owe, but have paid over £1000 to the NSPCC and Cancer Research, so ultimately it was worth all the effort.

Anyway, a number of people have expressed a wish that there could be one this year, so this is basically an exploratory mail to see what the consensus is.

Obviously it's going to be in England, before anyone starts bleating. England is smaller and has a more closely-knit fan community than say the United States or Australia. There's nothing to stop anyone there organising their own event to run at the same time maybe, but most of the UK site members socialise together anyway these days as a result of this site.

Other things to consider. Do we want live bands again, Re: Order, Flight and Digital, plus maybe other NOOL bands? There's no payment for the bands besides expenses, if you want to be in you do so on the basis that you are giving your time free. All profits go to charity. Do we look to get a star DJ again? Monty may not be available this year! It's too much to ask Hooky to give his services free again this year I think, would we be able to get Bernard or Steve maybe?

Also, where should we hold the event? London narrowly got the vote over Manchester last year, so this year it is probably appropriate to hold it in Manchester. Who knows a venue owner or has got contacts and can help secure a suitable venue for not much/no money?

I'm not going to do all the advance work myself this year, other people are going to have to be involved. Genuine expressions of interest in taking this forward please by PM to me.

Shall we look at September or October again? Obviously there aren't going to be any New Order dates around that time to piggyback onto, but there should still be sufficient interest to make this viable. Let me know what you think!

The whole premise of a NOOL day is great, and I unfortunately missed out last time! Manchester would suit me a lot better

I don't think I could really help with the organisation, but it would be great to attend a NOOL day!

Lets be brutally honest, last year you had a tour dates sandwiching this. So it was convenient. Looks like this year there is going to be absolutely nothing so you'll be expecting people to come up to Manchester to:

a) watch a a band member- most likely Hooky- DJ

and/or

b) watch a tribute band

Good cause or not. I dont have that many responsibilites compared to people on here, but I wouldnt travel the length of the country to watch a tribute band, and I wouldnt walk to the bottom of my street to watch anyone play records.

Incidentally, the tone of the original post suggests that this IS happenning, whether there is a demand for it or not.

I fear this is a very bad idea, Tim, as not only is NOOL increasingly a de facto branch of the BNP, but we'll all get our heads kicked in by a combination of "The DADDY" himself, Comrade, and his illustrious, charismatic and well-liked sidekick Cozzie (and her rancid pissflaps, NATCH).

Can Steve offer police protection??

Although saying that, "NOOL DAY" part 2 could actually be the ideal opportunity for the two of them to actually meet and iron out the problems they have with themselves and everyone else in a public forum ala Jeremy Kyle. Martin could be Jeremy Kyle, me and Steve could be the security etc etc

In all seriousness Tim, how many people do you expect to get to come to this? Re Order got what, about 100 in the Witchwood last time they played there? And if we're honest, Digital are going to draw pretty much the same people. With no tour, are people really going to be up for it? Will theybe in town anyway? Chances are no. Unless they live in Manchester.

Well I am obviously a little biased and would say yes to a NOOL day. I do know how much stress it cost Tim to organise it so it is understndable that he will not be driving the bus this year. I think Digital would be up for it (hush my mouth for being outspoken) and I bet re : orrdagrhhh!! would fancy it too. I'm sure Flight would be up for a night of swinging their pants and 100 is better than a man and his dog. It was absolutely fantastic that Pottsy and the right honorable King of Bass gave us their time for free for charity but they are professionals and probably will be tucked up with their own gigs and we have to respect that. To be fair at NOOL day, we were bloody spoilt!!!

Travelling to Manchester and doing an overnighter for me would be great fun (and I would do it out of my own pocket for free) if people wanted to see an evening of jd / new order / influences of. What we need is a venue with a PA and a local trustworthy promoter who is good with the media to raise money for charity.

If its in Manchester, we would be reliant on those who have local contacts.

Would people travel? Well even if people didn't want to see Digital, for charity, I would go to Manchester for the night for the fun of it.

And by the way, I still think what Tim did for NOOL day was bloody marvellous. Even if he is a bit like Rain Man.

On a less serious note, I think Fewer "turns" would make things easier on bands, audience and haggard organisers, last time we had the first band starting in an empty room and Hooky practically shovelling Re.Order off stage to get started in time. 3 bands,a "star" DJ, and the Montster to bluff over the technical messings (but only if he gets a mic and does his best "this is for Sharon and Trev from Oldham..." voice.), would be less temporally stressful. (yes, I know that artists and techies will find a way to make it a time crisis no matter what but there's fuck all sense giving them a head start) And Tim, you make sure and get some Valium into you this time mate

No, it just reinforces the message that there is no point in trying to do anything for this year without the boost that an NO tour gave us last year. Only one person plus those who helped on the night last year have come forward and offered their services, and it will need more than that. I'm not wasting my time trying to set something up for the likes of Kershaw just to rubbish everything, my time is far better spent elsewhere.

There will be some Digital gigs this year, come along to those instead!

Bit late by the looks of things, but I'd be up for helping out in some way if an EVENT was to take place... I did manage half an hour on the merchandise stall last time without losing the cash bag...

whatever happened to the 2006 dvd?

One of the bands who played declined to participate. The other footage was a little thin on the ground, about 5 mins of Flight, 10 mins of Digital and 5 mins of Pottsy.

There will still be a CD of the event, which may contain tracks from all the bands who played. Three bands have already given their consent to this.

I've been rather busy with other things, which is why it hasn't materialised so far. That's the trouble with having to do everything yourself!
