In this thread I will be using the copyrighted text posted by Geri on her thread called Thieves like us. I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find the thread (that search thing still ain't working for me). Anyway I know most people (including me!) reckon the lyrics are "you don't get a TOWN like this for nothing" but some people seem to be pretty sure it's "you don't get a TAN like this for nothing"... Soooo... Anyone agree with me?

The official New Order music and lyrics book said it was "TAN". That makes a lot more sense than "town".

What I meant is 'you don't get something so big like a town for nothing'. It makes sense tho

anyway, I'm with Bob on this one (even if he is from the wrong side of town :D ) I hear TIME ..

I think TAN makes as much sense as TOWN i.e. NONE

I've always thought it was town. As in Manchester.

It sounds to me like something that Tony Wilson would say.

It's a phrase that my parents used to use to describe someone who is idle, and who sits around doing nothing but topping up their tan.

You don't get a tan like this for nothing = you have to actually do something to get where you want to.

I burnt my head today and i don't work for a living!But to answer your question i have always thought it was TAN.The reasoning is the same as TIM's parents and mine would have reasoned.So i guess i will lose my tan sooner than you think!

it's "well you don't get a tongue like this for nothing..." it seems not to make sense, but i believe what he is saying it in the context of the previous lyrics: "answer me, why won't you answer me... i can't recall the day, when i last heard from you..."

Juat to muddy the waters even further, I've always sung time. :)

I was never quite sure which word he used in that line, however, wouldn't "your don't get a turn like this for nothing", make the most sense?

They were in Ibiza when mulling over Technique, so TAN always made sense to me...

Like a trig lesson, the answer is tan. Can't remember whether it's on video or live but I'm sure I've seen Barney point to his arm (indicating the tan) when singing that line.

I always thought it sounded like "POUND". "You dont get a POUND like this for nothing" as in the person Barney is directly the song at needs to actually do something to earn their money.

But today it sounds more like "FROWN"

To put an end to all this.......when the Mac that the band used to write the Technique songs was won in a competition, the lucky guy who won it posted up several screen grabs. One of them was the Run lyrics.

Once and for all, it is TAN.
