Just thought I'd get this off my chest...apologies to the chaps concerned, if they happen to be reading this!
...
Back in the late 1980s, I once spent an evening in the pub bullshitting a couple of lads we met that Gillian Gilbert was actually Ian Curtis, after his secret sex-change.
I told them that this took place in Belgium, and that the whole suicide thing was just an elaborate cover-up. Said I'd seen the documents to prove what I was saying, and that if they looked hard enough at pictures of Gillian, they would realise that it was really Ian.
They clearly didn't want to believe me, but when I added that the clue was in the name Gill(ian) - I thought of this on the spur of the moment - one of them actually ran back to his digs to get a couple of NMEs. The pair of them spent the rest of the night poring over a couple of pictures, taking turns at looking up and going "Nah!" and then frowning and saying "I don't know, though - look at her ears..."
Good thing there weren't any pictures of Ian Curtis in those music papers - she looks nothing like him!
I suppose that this demonstrates the attractiveness of conspiracy theories, or the attraction of secret knowledge...or maybe it was just a case of the Emperor's New Clothes?
