I was wondering what u guys would consider the best gig ever done by New Order and what was their worst ever?

i didn't enjoy the liverpool summer pops 2006 show that much

but that wasn't really due to the band, it was cos of the security!

Judging from the bootleg and DVD, I thought both shows were good. Then again I wasn't there, so:shrug:

Best would have to be either Doncaster Rotters 85 or Wembley 2006

Worst probably Newcastle Mayfair 1986 or Wembley 1987

Looking back, Dublin 93' was canny just cos of what it represented after the 'gap away'and i quite liked N'castle 06' (not cos of regional bollocks though, good day sesh & Engerland footy), also B'ham June 84' (too young) but a good smattering of Movement songs, quality abuse off Barney (You f**k-off, infact your a c*nt, if you want to come back stage afterwards.... classic

Wembley 2006.....well it was my only NO gig (and I thought it was class!)!

Good to read all of this but i was wondering (or forgot to ask at first actually) if you all could tell why the gig was great or shite...

I was at the Wembley 87 gig and I can confirm it was shite. This was not the bands fault though. It was a sit down gig and when NO went on stage about 50 people jumped out of their seats and ran up to the front. They were all thrown out by the bouncers. Also, the acoustics were terrible. There was a shocking echo off the back wall so you could hear an audible echo from every beat Steve played.

I was also at the Finsbury Park 87 gig in the tent and I thought that was pretty good actually.

But my favourite must be Brixton Academy 87(?) - the one videoed -actually I'm sure you can see my hand in the video as we were right in front of the camera down by the stage.

Best: Fuji Rock Fes 2001

Worst: Fuji Rock Fes 2005 (too large stage for them, boring set list, bad weather)

Best one for me...Wembley last October...since I had heard it was a shit venue, I wasn't expecting a whole hell of a lot...and I was rather put off with all those JD choons at the beginning...but by the end of the night, I was fucking ecstatic...finally getting to hear TPK live...

Worst...hmmm...I'm probably gonna have to go with the Area:One gig in Mountain View...furthest I'd ever been from the band, and to have that wanker Billy Smashingpumpkin around really didn't do anything for me...

there are two gigs that I don't remember due to intoxication...so they might have been worse, but I can't comment on that!!!

Birmingham 86 was just amazing, great performance, great atmosphere, great setlist, the band were on a real high. Newcastle 06 was just a brilliant night, and the band were excellent, better than Wembley 06 for me. Athens 06 was also fantasic, the resurrection of TPK was so unexpected.

The NEC 89 was a mare, the Technique songs sounded crap live, I got battered to fuck down the front and some twat stubbed a cig out on the back of my head. Finsbury 87 was just a really boring mundane gig, hated the setlist and expected more from them to be honest, and Finsbury 02 was just shite, the only good bit about that day was the pub beforehand, the gig was desperate and so was the weather. Wembley 87 was better than that by comparison, even if the band were flat and so was the atmosphere.

Not all of us :nono:

Best for me was a combination of Woolwich Coronet and the above mentioned Brixton Academy gig in '87. They played two almost entirely different sets in three days i think. Ahh, those were the days.

Worst? thought they hit a low in Bournemouth, last year.

Interest take on the 87 gigs above.

Finsbury 87. Probably one of the most hostile atmospheres I've ever experienced at a gig. Kicked off from the Mondays onward (Bez refusing to leave the stage!) and the front barriers buckled when ACR played Sounds Like Something Dirty. Brilliant from start to finish, and it's not often that I get intimated at a gig! Didn't seem to matter what the Order played that night, it was kicking off all over the shop! Wunderbar!

Wembley 87 was dire though, I thought. 4 of us sat in a different postcode to the band, and then the rest of my lot all over the venue but none of those within even eyeballing distance of us after we'd all assumed we'd be bunched up down the front. Hated it from start to finish. Just couldn't get my head round fcuking seats!

Comeback gigs are always good - Dublin 93, Apollo 98, then again at the Apollo in 2001 when the previous gigs that year (even Liverpool) hadn't been all that. Peel gig was also one the best nights out in recent years, the footage of 'Warsaw' still gives me goosepimples to this day!

Think most of my good gig experiences come from the atmosphere and personnel and not so much from the band themselves. And the worst gig memories are always of dire audience participation: particularly in the US and Oz. Didn't really matter what the Order pulled out of the hat, I don't think the majority have been particularly interested at the bigger gigs in those countries.

Agree with Jarvo about Finsbury '87, it was my first NO gig and was an absolute riotous experience. Lorraine had to bail out soon as Love Vigilantes started and how i managed to hold my own in the mosh pit for the duration i'll never know. The chaos that ensued on the playing of Face Up, AOC, Sub-Culture and Sunrise had to be seen to be believed. The only other gig that rivalled this one for atmosphere for me was G-Mex '88.

Most disappointing was as stated previously by others, Wembley '87 or Brum '89. Being seated at a NO gig is just a no no and while they at least played the likes of Ceremony at Wembley and encored with LWTUA and Sister Ray the atmosphere was just dire. Brum'89 didn't even have the bars open!

Best was also the first, Glasgow Plaza '81. They just had an amazing presence to them and to be honest, they still retained a lot of the Joy Division aura at that point. It's hard to imagine now but information was so sparse then that I had no idea what they really looked like or whether they'd really got a girl in to replace Ian.

I enjoyed seeing them every other time after that but it was never quite the same as that very first time.

Well Mr. Jarvis, you know we just don't know how to do proper concerts here in the States, with all those fucking seated venues...and the one lass that was whining because her little group had gotten "their space" as soon as they got in and then we all surged right fucking past her at the Oakland show in 2005...fucking sniveling little twat...oh...they're touching us...that one wasn't TOO bad...now that I think about it!!!

Doncaster was for me just a great atmosphere, great set etc. Wembley 2006 was an exexpected set list and a great performance by the band.

Newcastle Mayfair 1986 was not the greatest performance, atmosphere etc. Wembley 1987... I think this gig has been discussed in numerous threads in the past!!

I have to agree, at the end of the day it is your personal experience. The Peel gig was the first gig since the 80's where the set list took me by complete suprise (Shadowplay and Warsaw) so that does rate highly for recent gigs.

Oakland was probably the best experience Stateside, but the likes of Coachella or Hammerstein were just horrible.

Call me morbid, call me pale. but I've never really enjoyed the more hostile ones. I'd rather watch the gig than having it kick off in front of me, or behind me, whatever. I used to go to see the band, not to get in a swedge. Could do that any night at home without forking out for a ticket and travel. Since 2001 the social has been the most important aspect, then the band. It is quite amusing to see the same guys who were kicking shit out of each other 20 years ago now all standing together in the boozer and reminiscing though, and the Hyde Park Dads Army moshpit was one to savour ;)

Still don't see how you could qualify Finsbury 87 as either 'boring' or 'mundane' - thought that was a prime example of the band at the very peak of their powers.

Forgot to mention this one. The comeback to end all comebacks (and they'd only been away for one year!).

One of the silliest moshes in history but didn't have the spiteful undercurrent (nor all day drinking!) of Finsbury the year before!

lots of other highlights ,,best encore ,,wembley 87,, bristol 84( 2 fer chrissakes)

worst was either cheltnam or chippenham ,,84 they were crap,, got pissed,, they were still crap.. enjoyed it though.

Finsbury was certainly all-action in 1987 in terms of the crowd, but the setlist was just about a what's what of every song I didn't want to hear at that stage, and what they played was as important for me as being there. A good gig for me was one that contained my favourite songs, more than anything. For me, they became very boring live in mid-1987, they may have been at the peak of their powers but I didn't really enjoy any of the gigs between October 86 and 2002.

Chippenham wasn't that bad, was it? Gloucester was better on that tour though. Bristol 84 was a cracker, always nice to get two separate encores, not a regular occurrence. 84 was a good year I thought.

Speaking personally, the first Barrowlands date in 2001 was a highlight. As other people have mentioned it's often tough to beat your first time. Hearing them rip into Crystal first and then Ceremony later in the set was one of those moments I remember like yesterday. Only gig I managed to nab a setlist from too.

As for worst, I really didn't enjoy Liverpool last year. The whole trip bar the usual pre-match pissup was just shit really. Crap location (tent by the docks?), crap security, crap seating, crap "golden circle", crap atmosphere, crap weather etc. It was the only NO gig where I wish I hadn't bothered afterwards.

To be fair to the band though, the Summer Pops organisers alone were responsible for that disaster.

For me it was Nottingham Palais in 1984. First time I saw NO and got right down the front. Remember Hook being in a bad mood and just giving off Evils to everyone crowded in front of him- pure contempt. Sound. First time I'd heard Perfect Kiss as well. Really good set. They came on really late, missed the train back to Corby and has to kip in a bus shelter in Nottingham. All brilliant fun when you're 16...

Finsbury Park 87 (did they call it Factory in the Park?) was amazing, though I thought the sound system was sheeeite. Happy Mong days very funny. First time I'd seen em. Had no idea what was going on.

Thought Wembley in 87 was pretty soulless myself. Especially as I was sittinig down about 8 miles from the stage.

Thinking back, yes Liverpool last year probably was one of the worst. Right from me getting the crappest "posh" hotel in the world. The only redeeming bits were the pissups in the Hanover and the Slaughterhouse, and the hospitality from PHD. Rest of the day was summed up by the shocking kebab I had in the early hours. Overpriced and not up to standard.

Coincidentally I was listening to Milan Rollingstone last night. Brilliant gig. Think the sound man was having fun with his new delay unit.

I'd say that for anyone on the youthful side of 35 Reading '98 was just blissful, more about the crowd than anything else - the whole place became the all-singing, all-dancing church of New Order for 90 glorious minutes.

Remember listining to Radio 1 a few days later and Garbage's Shirley Manson (big NO fan) was telling Steve Lamacq that after about 20 minutes of listening to the Order's set and the audience reaction they knew they'd been blown offstage.

That poxy DVD really doesn't do the gig justice......

give it a whirl, you may be pleasantly surprised. Decent first three of IALP, EGG and Face Up, some sequencer problems later on, but it wasn't the worst hour they've ever spent on stage. Better than Margate or Heaven on that tour for starters.

Yeah, NO were originaly supposed to be headling the Phoenix Festival, but that got pulled and they were shunted to Reading where, contractually, Garbage were already pencilled in as headliners.

Totally agree with Fradders. Reading 98 was fucking immense, after missing out on the comeback at the Apollo, we had played the bootleg to death before Reading so had a good idea we were gonna get all the JD classics. An excellent night only spoiled by WIFM.

As for other standouts, the Liverpool comeback in '01 was pretty fucking great, even if we were up in the cheap seats, will never forget wandering to the bar then hearing the strains of KW1 and forgetting about the beer to have a dance right at the back of the arena.

I enjoyed the NEC 89, first gig and all that, but it's not half as bad as is made out.

Worst gig I've been to? I thought Manchester 05 was pretty shite. Even if I did say to Barney it was as good as Brixton the week before

Cannae believe anyone slagging Finsbury '87 - that and Reading 89 are the two best concerts I didnae get to.

I just really didn't enjoy Finsbury 87, for the very reasons that so many people seem to have enjoyed it. Thought the setlist was a bit stale, and I didn't like the atmosphere. Was nursing a rib injury so couldn't get stuck in down the front.

NEC 89 would have been ok if it had been a smaller venue and I hadn't had the belt on me jeans confiscated - I had to wedge me thumbs into the belt loops to keep me jeans up, and thus had little leverage to stand my ground down the front!

Gotta say Kel is a jammy fucker. The first set at the Hac in December 85 is also a big fave of mine, featuring my favourite live versions of both Sunrise & AIIWIW.

There are loads of cracking gigs from 83/84 with some cracking ad-libs before, between and after songs from Barney. As for the scooter incident that always makes me piss masel. Cologne 2001 is the best gig for pure wind up value though :thumb:

Even though that was actually their soundcheck that we saw, and not a gig! The Mondays were a little late in arriving, and hadn't soundchecked by the time they were due on stage, so they did the soundcheck instead of the gig! It's a great tape, all the lyrics in the first three songs are one-two, and "i like that, turn it up" :)

I actually enjoyed the Finsbury '87 gig - not every night you get to see A Certain Ratio, Happy Mondays and New Order in quick succession (and even Railway Children were pretty good).

I was only 20 at the time so I quite enjoyed the violence of the crowd (probably would not enjoy it today as an oldtimer of 40). Remember it as a pretty good day - National Express Coach down from Leicester. Met up with some Canadian Order fans who led me astray - Fare dodging on the Tube and getting tanked up in loads of pubs. Spent the afternoon in the Park whilst the Canadians got high and one of them decided he was an aeroplane and jumped off an embankment. I thought New Order's performance was good although my judgement may have been impaired by one too many beers.

Also went to NEC 1989 and thought that was pretty boring. The lad next to reckoned it was great because it sounded just like the records. Remember saying to him that if that was the case he could have saved himself the trouble and stayed at home with his LPs.

later? a few songs into their set she said "how are we supposed to follow that" (after leaving it almost an hour before they came on!) & then put a snippet of temptation into one of their songs.

remember seeing the crowd leave in great swathes as son as the order finished, brilliant :shades:

fave? dunno - i've found something to enjoy in all of them, but the liverpool come back was good as didn;t expect to see them again

Best: Chicago '05 (my one and only...*tear)

Worst: N/A. The fact that there were no others I saw is bad enough, due to being 24 and living stateside. Plus I went to the Chicago gig w/ my now-ex...bittersweet memories and such.

Auckland 85 was a dream come true for me - my first NO gig. I was as happy as a pig in shit when I learned they were coming. I think I was 15 then. Pity I didn't stick around for the encore 'Love Juice' - fuck it - they didn't do encores back then! :banghead:

...has anyone mentioned the Apollo 98 gig? That's got to figure somewhere in this.

Best show for me was seeing New Order for the first time at the Hacienda 20/7/83 .

For worst show its between Wembley 87 or the second show at the Hacienda 3/12/85 .

That reminds me of seeing Depeche Mode last year, barging to the front in my usual style and then being told my some bloke that he had reserved the particular spot I was standing on. In an unreserved standing gig.

The worst gig has to be Liverpool. That would actually be a contender for worst gig i've ever been to. Although probably wasnt as bad as some crappy festival sets i've seen by other bands. Electric Picnic was noticeable for its blandness.

Best one for me was Brixton O5. Opening with Ceremony (first time that year i believe), great booze up in The Canterbury and NOT playing Atmosphere. Oh, and Martins now legendary "AGE OF CON FUCKING SENT!"

It is hard to say. In my opinion, it cannot be summed up as “best” or “worst”. It is what you feel that is the most important. I have read somewhere that oldmonkey said that he disliked a concert everyone enjoyed. It is exactly what I mean… Going to a concert is, even if you are not alone, a personal thing. The setlist and the way the band plays come second. Personally, it is all based on the feelings I get. And these feelings are different to everyone. We can all sing along, jump or dance on the same track, but the feelings deep inside are personal to everyone and the rating of the concert depends on it, in my opinion – if you need to rate it.

Of course, expecting the best experience while going to a New Order concert when you are a New Order fan is a minimum. But let’s face the fact that New Order is not really a stage band and the worst is always a possible issue… that said, it is surely why I like them…

I didnt go to Reading 87 but I'll take your word for it. Maybe the Slough one sticks in my mind as it was my first proper gig and they played a really good version of She's Lost Control as a treat. No one decent ever came to play in Slough so I remember the buzz being pretty good for this one. Always interested in what other people remember of this gig though of course.

I'm a bit of a baby as far as New Order gigs go, first one being Finsbury in 02, so don't have that much to choose from. However...

Best was Wembley last year. I wasn't expecting much from that one to be honest, because of the venue, but it was fantastic and far exceeded my expectations. Definitely the pick out of the ones I attended.

Worst by far for me was summer pops, ruined by the antics of security on the night

best for me was Birmingham Tower Ballroom, just after Brotherhood came out. "and how do you follow that, well this is how". Even the gigs that were poor by their standards like the oxford gig in 85 were still some of the most enjoyable shows I've been to by anyone. The "last gig" at Reading around Republic time sticks out for me, too.

Seemed to remember the crowd were in a foul mood after that one

I just remembered why the common consensus is that this gig was a little lacklustre. Its cos we were all sober. If I remember they weren't serving beer here. No alcohol at all. Summink to do with it being a Bank Holiday weekend i think I got told by a steward.:nonono:

I think most people would say it was a bad one but what made it class was your old man givin that Tw**. that they call sucurity a good telling off. Power to the hook!!

 :thumb: Yes I'd agree Liverpool was the worst NO gig I've been to, thanks to the security and not NO's performance!

My 'best' one is a toss up between Wembley '06 and Manchester Apollo '05 - they were totally brilliant those nights IMO. Cheers!:thumb:

I told the daft twat to tell his wife to shift.

Edit: Best Brixton 05 for Ceremony opener and the first outing of Turn.

Worst - Personally Wolves 06. Just didn't get into it - fed up that the madness of the tour was all over.

Special mention for Summerpops for spoiling a brilliant pre-gig mood, although one of the best ever gig moments when Hooky reminded us all that he's still a punk at heart!

Nope, I had a great time all day too - and didn't even have the pleasure of scuffling with the security!!

I'm increasingly of the opinion that these things are totally subjective to the point of being meaningless: Col says above that he didn't enjoy the Wolves show when for me it was the best date of the tour (that I attended, anyhows). Lots of people slate Finsbury '02 yet, even though I broke me fucking arm, I really enjoyed that one too.

Go figure.

Cracking day out, only spoiled by SS occifers and the local constab. The gig itself was really good, as was the meet up beforehand and only 2 of the Corby Order were ejected at the gig. Rocket got thrown out for bad dad dancing

Musically, Summerpops was great.

Just didn't like the having a bastard shining a torch in my eyes every five minutes, asking to see my ticket and lobbing people out for enjoying themselves.

I spent most of Wolves sitting at the bar with Al. Had a cracking time in that 80's disco after the gig though.

Then the worst taxi ride of my life the next morning.

Edit: Summerpops 07 is at Aintree Racecourse and has nobody with fans worth warning about the crappy security.

Maybe the change of venue will improve things anyway.

As Fradders says, it's totally subjective. I've great memories of Summer Pops. Me and the burd arrived just as they were taking the stage and got about four rows from the front without any hassles from security and despite having a ticket for right up the back

It was the first time I'd seen 'em since Peel Day and I thought they played a great set. I also enjoyed stumbling across a smaller tent near the toilets where there were two very accomodating stewards who let me use their "facilities" in return for a share of my stash and gave us a big fat joint to take away with us (pity I don't smoke hash!).

The taxi ride to John Lennon Airport at 4AM (after zero sleep) and the subsequent flight to Rome on World Cup Final day were quite heavy lowlights.

that one was a bit weird, had the photo pass for first three songs & was then able to stroll around the front to my front row seat & continue to take pictures. no mosh pit so atmosphere was different - it was like the difference in watching a bad match standing up compared to a good one sat down - you enjoy the ones where you stand more than when you sit as the atmosphere makes the gig/ match more then.
