movement, who likes it?

New order's very first record after joy division, i don't own it, but i considered getting it (mainly cuz i hear it's very guitar based, and joy division-ish). anyways i wanna know what you guys think of it and how many of you guys own it. below are things to discuss about movement and i just wanna get your opinion on this.

from reading outside reviews, i get the impression that it's a record that only true fans really bother to seek out and it's not a good starting point to get into new order. discuss.

and the vocals...i love barney's singing, but i read one review on e-opinions that commented that barney was trying to do an ian curtis impression on this record, since he sings in this low tone of voice. discuss.

oh yeah, what merit does this record have? i like the simple art work...

I'll be honest its been a while since of heard it but as a true New Order fan its a must have.

It isn't a good album if you're trying to get in NO. Substance would be the best place to start there. In saying that though it isn't a bad debut album at all.

It is very similar to Joy Division but nowhere near as good. They production isn't very good either. Barney's voice is very difficult to hear over the music in some songs.

Over the years the album has grown on me with Doubts Even Hear and Dreams Never End as the stand outs.

This could have been one of their best albums if they included Ceremony, Temptation and Procession on it.

A must for any NO fan.

i like it, but it had to grow on me. my fav. song from it is "the him" because it has this weird sound to it, like you have to close your eyes to listen to it...but maybe that's just me. it doesn't really remind me of JD much.

did not like this very much at all.but the car carry case cover that came as an extra is a perfect example of the ORDER doin something different and expensive at that time. Barney's voice was not too hot but it is a shame to start finding fault after 20 + years.At least he is still trying to give us diehards something to listen to. You can call me a sentimental old fool but I still love it. It is very atmospheric, I think because of the similar nature of the songs, and it got me through many a adolescent sticky patch (no double-entendre intended).

There are better songs on PCL, Low Life and Brotherhood but there are also worse ones. I think the production is better than on the above 3 albums too.

If you're going to be objective about it Barney's voice is a bit ropey but that's part of the package. Here are a group of people carrying on regardless and the poor old guitarist is forced to sing.

If you love Joy Division then Movement will be like listening to the album that should have come after Closer. The overall atmosphere is a carry on from the Decades/ Heart & Soul side of Closer. It's actually the New Order album that means most to me as you can really feel the loss in the music. Favourite tracks - Dream Never End, Doubts Even Here (would fit perfectly on side 2 of Closer, after The Eternal) and The Him. If you like the poppy/dancey side of New Order then it'll probably be a bit of a shock and you may not like it but JD fans should definitely hear it. Barney does sing differently (Hooky in fact sings on 2 songs and helps out on The Him) but to my ears it's actually better than his later style - it's a lot more dignified (no whooping !)

I think its a massive dissapointment after Closer - which is just about the best album ever written. A really poor mans JD. A couple of OK tracks, but thats it. Worth getting only to hear the improvement in PCL, and be amazed at how they came up with such moments of brilliance as Ceremony, EGG and Procession while creating such a relatively poor album

Must admit I'm quite fond of this moody old bugger. After DNE personal fave is very spooky "Truth", with the Barney classic: "Some people look down on me/I hope they like what they see". Put that on my gravestone, please.

Those songs sound so much better when played live, though: they have a real energy to 'em which Hannett seemed suck out with all his nob twiddling. So, "Taras..." is great, "Movement" only mildly interesting.....IMHO

I think its like a fine wine and has certainly got better with age. Alot of the tracks sound better now then when it was released in the early 80's. I didn't like it at first but now I think its well under rated.

There's some crackin tracks on it - Dreams Never End, my personal favourite Chosen Time, Senses, Doubts Even Here and Denial.

Overall its much better than either Republic or Get Ready IMHO.

It's almost like a JD album with Ian on holiday and Barney taking over with half-written lyrics about dead puppies or something....nah, it's pretty swell. I'm big into the early days, right before Blue Monday hit big, so this is essential if you like their darker stuff. I gotta say some of the songs come off better live than on record (Denial and Senses from Taras Shevchenko are testament to that), but get it for Hooky's (not Barney's) Ian impersonation on Dreams Never End, ICB, and Doubts even Here.

Barney on ICB, methinks. Hooky on DNE, DEH and backing on The Him.

I really love the clattering sound on Chosen Time, I'm sure I chose it as my second favourite on that massive poll were you chose two from each album.

Movement is an odd beast indeed...first time I didn't even like it - bar the first track of course...but it kind of slowly wrapped its icy fingers round me and I think it's a pretty good record in retrospect - definitely showing the place New Order were at at the time....that air of uncertainty and feeling of being at a crossroads in their evolution was reflected in the titles too, if not just the music... I think "Truth" is one of the strongest and most haunting songs they've ever done - it's such an icy-sounding track (especially that melodica - sends chills down the spine)... I remember some writer compared listening to the album to sitting in a refrigerator or cold storage room...and i can see what he was getting at.... The climax of "The Him" sums this notion up perfectly - it's like being blasted by a cold Arctic wind and no less effective for that! Half of the album is actually best listened to when driving through a snowstorm - it's such effective soundtrack music for that! It makes me also think of those press pics of Joy Division in the snow in Manchester...

So for those reasons it's an effective document of New Order trying (but not quite succeeding - that would happen with their next album) to climb out of Joy Division's shadow. But they simply can't deny that this album exists either... "Movement" simply now serves as a valuable marker of New Order's evolutionary process.....put it this way, their worst album came out twelve years later!!!! :D

MOVEMENT: any time of day, yes sir!! One of their best, IMHO.

I admitt I hated it when I first listen to it. I only liked Dreams never end. but about 2 years ago I finaly got it. And now I just love it. I think it much better then PC&L. The Him is one of my top favorte songs of New Order. My only wish is New Order would play a song or 2 from movement in their concerts. Mostly the Him.

So did you get as far as Chosen Time? and still turn it off?

Last one I listened to was ICB. Which forced me to turn off. Chosen Time's okish, but not worthy of the praise it's being given In my opinion. Each to their own I suppose...

My God, out of the ashes of Ian's suicide they create Movement. Nobody, Nobody in the band could sing at the time. That is why it sounds like shit. Dreams Never End as the first track--a statement that they are back, a counterpoint to Insight. Truth, the emotional low point. ICB is one of my Top 10 NO songs Outfreakenstanding. Doubts even here--predates Xymox and many of their ilk. Denial rocks.

Instrumentally, they are on top of their game for that moment in time. Really the best NO album in terms of drumming. Hooky's bass is really finding its unique sound that we so deeply love. Just the vocals...filling in for Ian, a prospect they never thought would happen. Now listen to Barney sing, he is excellent even if he is getting fat.

Totally agree. Just compare the intensity of the performance in the 'Taras' video against any of the later ones. Later on New Order gigs became very laddish but those early concerts (I saw them in Glasgow in early 1981) were almost like religious experiences - they didn't need lasers or backing tapes or autocues then, just total belief in what they were doing.
