Sorry if this has been done before but I can't find a thread in the browser...

Obviously we all love NewOrder and have been amazed and astounded by their music and development over 25+ years of making bang up tunes. But I wondered if anyone else felt, like me that, just a few too many tunes got the reverential treatment?

Here's a few of my teeth-grinders to get started:

Blue Monday Bizarre Love Triangle Love Vigilantes The Perfect Kiss Face-Up Touched by the hand of God (Possibly the worst song ever committed to vinyl) 60 Miles an Hour and the rest of Get Ready that isn't Crystal...

:scream:

I'm just about to find myself an deep bunker and hide...

True Faith. Bizarre Love Triangle (12") Technique.

That is all. Fact. End of.

Er, I don't think anyone has EVER been 'reverential' about 60MPH!!??!!

Technique (as a concept) is vastly over-rated. The New Order album for people who don't like New Order.

I'll give you the sheep though. Fine Time is the standout track for me, and that bassline at the death, competing with the sheep, is one of the best things Hooky's ever done.

And I'm down the shrink clinic later for a wee heid test. I think he's going to hold up NO 12" covers and ask me to give a simple Yes/No answer. But that cover to Blue Monday will have me quaking in the corner

Blue Monday - Not as good as Temptation but gets twenty times the recognition.

Bizarre Love Triangle 12" - A solid fan favourite? Prefer the shorter mixes meself.

Here To Stay - Hyped collaboration that didn't come to much (the yanks seem to lurve it).

World In Motion - :uhoh: Pish.

Most of the stuff they've done isn't rated enough by the majority of people, certainly not commercially.

Sure, there is stuff I don't much care for, but not stuff I think is over-rated. I only care about my own ratings of stuff, so what anyone else thinks of as over-rated is pretty much irrelevant to me!

That's very diplomatic, Timbo!

So I say: SUNRISE.

It's vacuous, sub-Cure rip-off tripe for sweaty boys who really just need to have a wank.

I dunno, I'm rather inclined to agree with Jarvo. A load of fuss is always made about Technique as being the pinnacle, but at least half of it is filler and it really hasn't aged well. It's the only one they used synth and drum sounds on that sound really dated now, and I think their own thoughts on the record can be gauged by the fact they dropped everything off it in 1993 (most of it didn't survive the 89 tour) besides playing the only one they hadn't done live before at a couple of 98 shows.

For me,due to quite a lot of posts championing it,I just don't get Turn whatsoever, just sounds like mediocre AOR to me,as does other tunes on WFTSC,especially Hey Now,What you Doing, which is as shite as the title suggests. Plus, isn't the point of over-rated being lost a little? It just seems to me that people consider a song to be over-rated just 'cos they don't personally like it,songs seem to be being plucked out of thin air without anything to base the argument on.For instance,if Blue Monday was widely regarded as being a top song by fans, but not so by media critics, then it would be considered to be over-rated.Or am I twat? :skeptic:

Which is pretty much why I answered how I did, as "over-rated" is so subjective. There are songs I like, songs I dislike, and songs that in my opinion too much fuss is made over. Temptation is the clear winner on the latter in my book!

I'd have said Love Vigilantes in an absolute stonewell classic.

Is much made of BLT these days? Used to think it was such a stormer, but that pap they've played live for nigh on 10 years now just softens the impact somewhat for me. I mean, yes, it's intrisically the same song, but it's lost it's appeal ten-fold now that they've rejigged the arrangement to suit the 12".

I don't actually feel like any are over-rated. It suprises me how much I still like Blue Monday, given how over-exposed that song is and that its not as distinctive as it once was, given how every other electronic dance track these days sounds like a remix of it. I do, however, occasionally wish Barny was a better lyricist. You don't listen to NO for the words, thats for sure, most of them are nonsense really and occasionally distractingly bad ('it beats arithmetic'? 'a land of meat'? 'you can't shaft when you are alone'?). Then again, there are _worse_ lyricists out there, I guess.

PHD, what is that Bernard Sumner book picture you've got? I've heard there is a biography of him on the way, is that the cover?

I agree with that totally. I think Blue Monday transcends what ANYONE might think of it- it changed music

Oh yeah and Sumners lyrics always a few absolute howlers in there! :eek3:

That's it exactly,& just how it should be viewed.I went thru' a period myself of almost fookin' hating it because of its' over-exposure,somewhere towards the end of the '80's,but then I just fell in love with it all over again,to the point where now, when I listen to it,I just feel so proud of what it represents,& it's a fookin' N.O. song. It's just so BIG.Worship what it stands for

Temptation can piss me off in the same way these days sometimes, especially live:\ohwell: :thumb:

I applaud your enthusiasm, but it didn't really, did it? Change music, I mean.

Kraftwerk had a no.1 in this country a year earlier with a track they'd written in 1977 so it's not like Blue Monday was breaking new boundaries. Or introducing a new kinda muzak to the masses.

More than anything, I just think Blue Monday has aged amazingly well, hence its critical acclaim. Whereas other early 80's electronica (and late 70's) has dated badly I think New Order's first stab at dance still sounds fresh as a daisy.

Depends what you mean by changing music? Was it innovative - probably not as the sound emerged from their forays into the dance clubs of the US and as you say Kraftwerk were doing this before (as were others). But did it bring a new style to a bigger audience in the UK - the answer must be yes. Look at all the dance musicians who say that Blue Monday was the track that got them into dance music.

'Guilt is a useless emotion'....? I honestly don't get why so many people on this site seem to rate it....?

Possibly because it was the only real dance track in an otherwise average album.

I think Here to Stay is overrated too, particularly on the other side of the Atlantic. For me, its a turgid run of the mill dance track with guitars not really sitting well on top.

The real ones for me are BLT and Love Vigilantes... Too much is made of those. Actually think LV is a poor song regardless of whether it's rated or not. :read:

I'd have said Love Vigilantes in an absolute stonewell classic.

I'm getting worried about how often I'm agreeing with you, Al... LV has been my favourite NO track for the last 20 years or so... Genius... Overrated? It's all good... :thumb:

... but Lonesome Tonight or Leave me Alone are incredible, beautiful, moving tracks! New Order at their peak as a group.

Must agree that "Here to Stay", while not terrible, is a minor effort. Not sure why some of those here rank it highly, the world seemed to ignore "Here to Stay" without much hesitation or remorse, even with the promotional tie-in with the movie, or asscoiation with The Chems. The track is nice but uninvolving at best.

What I've always said - thanks Al. Add to that WIFM and Piss Stream.

Only complaints about New Order I ever had.

Oh, apart from the lack of gigs from 1993 to 2000...

Could not agree more.... 'Leave me alone' is probably the most under rated song ever...

Yes. It keeps getting advertised on eil.com. I don't know how official it is though.

El Jarvo... In retrospect maybe I was being a touch too enthusiastic. But you still hear echoes of Blue Monday in many susequent dance records. Isn't Neil tennant on record as saying that he almost gave up when he heard Blue Monday because it was so close to what he wanted to produce with the Pet Shop Boys?

I know at the time of BM that they were listening to lots of italian dance music and were massively influenced by Kraftwerk (surely the most under-rated comedy act of all time- cover of trans europe express anyone? Lyrics to hall of mirrors? Just me?) but NO brought together many other elements with the high lead bass over the electronics and those strangely eerie vocals... I'd argue that while Kraftwerk epitomises an entirely german sound aesthetic New Order is the first English Electronic Dance record and sounded so different to anything that went before in British music...

CONFUSION!

I can't believe it's the NO song that has the most number of versions. But only a few really care...

Indeed!
