Possibly because it was the only real dance track in an otherwise average album.
I think Here to Stay is overrated too, particularly on the other side of the Atlantic. For me, its a turgid run of the mill dance track with guitars not really sitting well on top.

The real ones for me are BLT and Love Vigilantes... Too much is made of those. Actually think LV is a poor song regardless of whether it's rated or not.

I'm getting worried about how often I'm agreeing with you, Al... LV has been my favourite NO track for the last 20 years or so... Genius... Overrated? It's all good...

Must agree that "Here to Stay", while not terrible, is a minor effort. Not sure why some of those here rank it highly, the world seemed to ignore "Here to Stay" without much hesitation or remorse, even with the promotional tie-in with the movie, or asscoiation with The Chems. The track is nice but uninvolving at best.

Kraftwerk had a no.1 in this country a year earlier with a track they'd written in 1977 so it's not like Blue Monday was breaking new boundaries. Or introducing a new kinda muzak to the masses.
More than anything, I just think Blue Monday has aged amazingly well, hence its critical acclaim. Whereas other early 80's electronica (and late 70's) has dated badly I think New Order's first stab at dance still sounds fresh as a daisy.
El Jarvo... In retrospect maybe I was being a touch too enthusiastic. But you still hear echoes of Blue Monday in many susequent dance records. Isn't Neil tennant on record as saying that he almost gave up when he heard Blue Monday because it was so close to what he wanted to produce with the Pet Shop Boys?
I know at the time of BM that they were listening to lots of italian dance music and were massively influenced by Kraftwerk (surely the most under-rated comedy act of all time- cover of trans europe express anyone? Lyrics to hall of mirrors? Just me?) but NO brought together many other elements with the high lead bass over the electronics and those strangely eerie vocals... I'd argue that while Kraftwerk epitomises an entirely german sound aesthetic New Order is the first English Electronic Dance record and sounded so different to anything that went before in British music...
