I bought this album about 8 yrs ago, maybe more, anyway only listneed to it once before, i've always lookd at the cover and just thought nah.
Recently i've been putting all my cds onto my computer so i've been listening to a few to remind me why i bought 'em and movement was a a pleasent suprise not at all as shit as i'd always held it in my head
Just thought i'd share this pointlessness with y'all
its not pointless...i just bought movement a week or so ago...i liked it.i try not to judgepeople's music from back then, cos technology wasn't as advanced as it is today and that means working a little harder to get shit right back then.nowadays, you have this protools crud,autocue,lipsyncing, yada yada..maybe there'ssomething in the air and water...hmmmm....
anyway,look at it this way,NO have done a lot of great stuff no matter the dislikeof certain albums or tracks.if someone doesn't like movement, someone else will.
would it make tony wilson mad if he knew anyone bought movement for 2.50 used?

To be honest, I like it. I just tink that if the track order were mixed up a bit it wouldn't be as bad.
Like "Truth" right after the only "happy" song on the album?! What were you thinking Hennet!
I really like the album. Production on it is terrible (odd considering UP and Closer have smooth sheens production wise) but the songs are great.
Movement's not a miasma of suck in my opinion. I think Hannett was the wrong man for the desk, but the core of the album still carries a very powerful tone. Hearing live takes of a number of Movement's songs has enlightened me to hwo the band wanted its direction to be, and for songs like Denial, Senses, and Chosen Time I tend to favor their faster, live counterparts (see Sept/23/ 81 Sheffield Poly recording for proof of this!) to the Movement ones - but that doesn't mean they are bad to begin with.
My favorite songs off Movement are The Him and Doubts Even Here. I think they are brilliant as is on the record. I don't know many fans that out and loud about loving the style and tone of those songs, but they won me the album back when I bought it. Movement's the result of that first step into their new career and I can't discount its wavering, nervous genius.

Actually Jeff, it really is my favourite album. I suppose it depends at which stage people get into New Order or Joy Division that puts a slant on their preferences, as well as other music likes of course.
I certainly think it's best listened to incredibly loud... 
Hannett did great with Procession and EGG but fucked up Movement for sure. As has been said numerous times - best appreciated live. Some of the gigs from 1981 are played so frighteningly well that you wonder if it's New Order at all. 
Have to agree with Chris Nash. It's one of my favourite albums, not just of New Order's. I got into it as soon as it came out and played it to death- probably driving my parents crazy in the process...
I really like the sound of it... you can almost hear where they want to go with tracks like "Chosen Time" and lots of synth layers over the album. Some great emotional stuff on there. Favourites include The Him, Senses, Denial, DNE, Chosen Time... Oh, that's almost the whole album!

Prefer Peel Sessions and Taras. Dreams Never End, Chosen Time, and Senses are the stand out tracks.
Always failed to grasp the lack of love for Movement. Bloody masterpiece, doubly so since Ian had barely stopped swinging when they did it.
I bought it about 8 years ago too.
Since then it's had about er, 8 listens.
It's just not my cup of tea really. Many people slate the production which is fair enough but I don't really rate the songs either; Peel Session or otherwise. They seem a bit average and the later stuff completely eclipsed most of those tunes so why go back? Would rather give the '82 FEP a spin over pretty much anything Movement produced ('cept maybe Dreams Never End).
Barney's "dark" sixth form lyrics were a definite low point as well, most of them you'd be more likely to find scribbled on the back of a goth's physics jotter. Of course they're allowed a bit of leeway as the circumstances surrounding the recordings were grim but "masterpiece" is a bit much shirley?
I'm not sure but fans who believe it's the band's peak output must've really hated the later stuff... all 25 years of it?

As New Order they were still finding their feet and their own sound I guess - nothing wrong with that - it's still a great album and it's one I frequently go back to again and again.
I've loved everything they've done really Ally. Except maybe WIFM. I think for us grey haired oldies, NO have been a soundtrack for our lives through our teens, twenties and thirties. It's like having a big brother - he pisses you off sometimes, is often contrary, you never quite understand him, but if someone outside the family has a 'go' you'd still defend him.
It's like we're all so used to NO that we've not really noticed some of the changes as they've developed along the way, but if someone points them out, we kust think 'Oh yeah, didn't notice that'.

Not really hated as such, more just kind of saddened and disappointed as the years went on and they became just another band. The one-two of Blue Monday and Confusion brought an end to something very special and, in my (gulp) 30 years of being fascinated by music, something that was totally unique.
To me, Movement(and pretty much everything else they did up to the end of '82) still retained that spiritual, transcendent aura that JD had but from '83 onwards they just somehow lost it, both live and on record. Again, they still made great music but they were no longer in a league of their own.
I also thinks it's a bit much to slag Barney's early lyrics (and it seems that at least some of those early lyrics were written by Hooky and Steve also). At least I could show them to people without cringing unlike the majority of his later efforts. Oh, and his voice was also much less annoying before he learned to sing 'properly' i.e. in that bizarre, strangled American accent he does now.
I find it an interesting album, just hearing the transition from JD to NO, you can't blame them for still sounding like JD, that's who they were, you can't just change your natural music instinct 'cos someone died and you changed your name, it takes time to evolve, and that evolution is why we all still love them, we (the nearly 40's) have evolved with them, going through the angst early 80's pop late 80's, acidic 90's getting back to roots early 00's and coming to terms with and accepting who you are mid 00's, which, when you look at it like that means WFTSC is a perfect final album.

So what you're saying is, everything post-Confusion was "just another band" and none of those post-83 records ever had anything special about them? Sounds completely far-fetched to me but perhaps this is another of those "you had to be there in '81" scenarios.
My view on Movement is that they were like a dog missing the head and wandering back to their old pissing grounds out of habit. Fair enough to be honest, they'd been through a massive trauma losing Ian and it was only natural they'd try and continue with that vocal style and those Closer-like keyboard washes but it couldn't seriously have continued, could it?
Ian was dead and it was time to progress a little. If the FEP or PC&L had been Movement Part Two they would've quickly been forgotten as "the band that used to be Joy Division" and never really been noticed again.
I will say I like the artwork though as I've got an original Movement poster framed on my wall :)
and to add Ally, I think Movement is only considered "great" by many because it was the only NO album that sounded simlar to JD, thus bridging the gap. Had NO put out another album or more like that, I don't think it would be appreciated like it is now.
For me Movement shows where they were at and helps appreciate the blind-faith leap they took in changing thier sound. An NO collection without Movement is like writing someone's biography and completely missing the dark portion of thier life that made them become who they are today.
And I concur, to say post 83 albums are non-ground breaking is a listener wanting the band to stay in the rut they already were in.....and that in itself is truely non-groundbreaking.

As I said, they did some great songs later on but they just didn't carry the same weight. Ask anyone who saw JD live and they all talk about how mesmerised they were, how they couldn't take their eyes away from the band. I personally think early NO still had that aura about them, warching them live in those days was a totally absorbing experience, the intensity of the performance was something truly special and I've never had that sensation with any other band. Seeing NO from 83 on was still great fun but it was entirely different, almost like a separate band.
As to where they could have gone next, well there's an infinite number of directions they could have taken or they could have continued to experiment and keep changing direction - Wire, their peers, have successfully done this throughout their career. I think they became quite lazy after BM and started to write to a succesful formula and stopped taking risks. Great for mainstream success, not so great for art.
But could that also have something to do with personal age? I sure as hell can't get as mezmerized and pulled in by music as I did when I was in my late teens-early twenties. Maybe that period is a defining moment of "becoming" or its later-age overexposure to music ....so could it be that its "you" and not necissarily the band? Any one else on this?
