So New Order may probably be dead. Countless current bands have cited their influence. But which bands should be nominated as heir apparents?

(I vote for M83.)

Not the Killers.

IMO,without being biased,I don't believe there is anyone. Most of the bands around at the moment,& some of them I like very much, carry far too much of an influence in their sound to be innovative or original.Plus, they explode on the 'scene' with a fanfare of being this & that, deliver one 'killer' album,& that seems to sum up their worth,no further idea. Most of the bands from the '80's seemed to evolve &/or improve as they aged & had longevity, tho' I admit that in this present day of a fickle industry,it is a bit harder to cement that same foothold,it's too disposable.Who really can go from Blue Monday to AOC,from Dreams Never End to EGG,from Broken Promise to BLT,rock to dance, guitar to sequencer, so effortlessly, while still retaining what it is unmistakeably the same band?

Ok,I'm fookin' biased! :D :thumb:

No-one. New Order are too unique, thats what makes them as good as they are. Maybe some other band might try, but they'll never come close.

LCD Soundsystem?

In terms of musical range, they've certainly demonstrated a diversity of styles, from acid to punk, via heavy rock and indie rock, incorprating some of the best music written so far this century.

Now LCD Soundsystem I think are absolute quality, but I would take them out this point for the reason that altho' they are different than what's around at the moment & offering something new-ish,their sound is still very much 'dancebeat' orientated,& doesn't swing from a complete guitar driven track one minute,to a sequencer driven,pop-dance track the next.Example? YSF to Leave Me Alone,Weirdo to BLT on the same albums. They don't have that diversity yet,not IMO:shrug:

Electrelane recall some of the unique spirit of PCL throughout their most recent album and The Power Out.

The Editors - two albums in, get singer to top himself, get girlfriend in on keyboards and they're off!

Dare I mention ----Muse???? Alot of potential, with three strong albums, but there needs to be an evolution to a slightly different sound in their next album....

I nominate myself to follow in New Order's path.

I make electronic music pretty infuenced by NO...though with a bit more of a lyrical bent.

I've just recently released a full length album. It got really good reviews in all of the press here in Columbus.

Check it out, if you wish. With my music, I am trying to take what Moroder/Kraftwerk/NO started and take it to my own place.

I'd love for some fellow NO fans to give a listen. The four singles from my album are up on my Myspace page.

Heh well anticipated, but I'd add a couple of others onto that (Movement, New York I Love You...., North American Scum)...

Umm, no. Without sounding unkind, your tracks don't have anywhere near the vibrancy and creativity of New Order's, and being influenced by a band is far different than being an influential band.

I don't think I've ever seen you leave a comment that wasn't promoting your own music. That's annoying.

ANYWAY, LCD Soundsystem is a good nominee as far as rock vs. sequencer with a completely updated sound - and James Murphy apes Mark E. Smith with his singing style so it's got that whole norvern thing going on! ;)

I'd further nominate Soulwax because the album Any Minute Now pulls off a fantastic range and seamlessly incorporates dance and rock tracks.

(...for that matter so does Scissor Sisters, but if I nominate them I'll start a shit storm.)

Yep,considering 'she's my man' is Elton Johns' 'I'm still standing' to a fookin' T.!! & the other one that sounds like Robbie Williams,'Mary' is it? If the Scissor Sisters ever get mentioned as being influential,I'm giving up listening to music:nono:

I don't want to hijack this thread into a love/hate Scissor Sisters tangent. I know opinions are sharply divided, but I will say they were the band that reignited my hope in current bands after a decade of shit music. I'd pick the first album over the second one, and I know their live show and energy are a bigger pull than any influence they may have on other bands. I personally love them, but they've also had virtually no exposure in the US. They are still very much a cult phenomenon here.

Could they follow in New Order's footsteps in terms of relevance and innovation? Doubtful. Do they excite me in a way New Order does? Most definitely. I'll leave it at that.

Good choices, in fact J. Murphy collaborated quite a bit of stuffs with Soulwax so I think a hybrid 'LCD/Soulwax/Night Versions' will make a good NO substitute as you have dance+guitar+electronica all in one! :thumb:

There is a fantastic mash-up/remix of the entire Sound Of Silver album floating around called Sounds Like Silver - highly recommended!

...and in case you hadn't seen the previous threads, LCD just covered Joy Division's No Love Lost for the B-side of their current single.

How can Muse be New Orders heirs when they are already much bigger than New Order ever were?

And for the record, they have four albums. Plus one soundtrack. The potential you mention may have been reached, they play Wembley Stadium twice this weekend.

I've seen Muse live twice in a club and they're an alright band, but - they're basically just Radiohead with louder guitars, aren't they?

Is it possible that the reason New Order were (once!) so fresh and innovative was partly because they were riding the wave of new technology? I mean their best work (EGG to Low Life?) came at a time when new technology was becoming available (all that desperate tweaking to get the stuff to work properly, a screwdriver being as important a gig prop as a plectrum). I mean OK the technology continues to develop, but maybe that era was almost up there with the invention of the electric guitar (and look what that did) whereas nothing so dramatic has happened since or seems likely to in the near future. Hence, its simply not possible for any band right now to be as exciting as they were. (surely our resident Marxist MIMX would approve of this argument - base determines superstructure, and all that?)

(Or the aboe might all be bollocks and its just be that I was a teenager then and am a jaded middle aged guy now!)

James Murphy aint that much younger than NO themselves. I'll be suprised if we get more than one more album out of LCD

ehh..didn't know about the 4th album....sorry.

What I meant by potential, as in potential as NO heirs (not as a band in marketing). Seems that they need an evolution record to really set themselves seperate from the "radiohead" anaology everyone uses.

so the king is dead. long live the king. new order will return. but having said that I do like Komakino, as I have said before. Obvious link. Development is another issue. Another one is growing up in Salford in the mid to late 70s. Hey, all we need is another depression, massive unemployment, inner city decay, riots, racism, erosion of workers' rights and an extreme right wing government to sort out the miners. Then the social arena might be fit for another joy division. Anyone for a fine time?

thatcher was only in for about 8 momths when IC hung himself, JD were well and truely NO by the time of the miners strike, and surely, with all the goths and emo's about there enough bloody depression. bring back the acid house era, that's what i say!, every one happy and loved up, even brought peace to the football terraces.

I however nominate no one, except maybe Tomihira. And not just because of their awesome cover of 'Mr. Disco.' :thumb:

About 20 years younger, isn't he?

I thought the Radiohead stereotype was banished after Origin of Symmerty......... I must have been wrong. There is a lot more to Muses music than that.

I would currently rate Muse as the best band in the country..... and Matt Bellamy is an awesome guitarist/pianist

Now that's a good point well put.I didn't intend to put across my dislike for their music,it's ok but just not my cup of tea,but in terms of entertainment & 'slight' diversity to their sound, you are spot on.Again,as for the relevance & innovation, there is no way they could ever hope of matching N.O.,& that relates to my point earlier that artists are just too disposable & copiest these days to ever be that relevant, innovative & influential to any lengths, let alone N.O.'s.I wouldn't say that N.O. were on the 'throne' to begin with as such, but they would certainly be up there:clap: :thumb:

Sorry. I just thought some folks on here might be interesdted to hear what a fellow NO fan is doing musically, thats all. In defense of myself, I dont try to ape, emulate, or sound like the Order. A for creativity, my songs are quite intricate and layered, if you listen carefully. There is a lot going on. I also use lead guitar in a way thats no to common in dance music. I've got an album with 12 tracks, there is a lot more on it than whats on my Myspace page.

But its all a matter of opinion anyways, so no problem. I don't think I am wrong in mentioning my music on here occaisionally though. Other posters do it. So long as its not done too often. I think is interesting to learn what other NOOL'ers are doing creatively.

And Ive made tons and tons of posts that never mentioned making my own music.

Most of my posts are about Phils guitar wanking. ;)

Hah hah.

I like LCD Soundsystem a lot.

The Juan Maclean is also pretty good. Check him out if you haven't already.

There is a Swedish electro band called the Knife and I think they are superb.
