At the end of the day, everything you typed above is pure speculation. As Jack has repeated numerous times nobody really knows what went on. That cuts both ways and shouldn't serve to canonise Hooky while at the same time condemning Barney.

I didn't find Barney's statement pretentious, seemed pretty straightforward to me.

A small section of New Order fans seem to childishly think Barney is a wanker because he isn't as gregarious as Hooky when it comes to dealing with the fans (see Cambo's misguided reply). This whole "Hooky gave me a hug once and Barney's never done anything like that for the fans" attitude is simplistic bollocks and I suspect most of you know that.

It's certainly not enough of a reason to think you can accurately assign sole blame to either Hooky or Barney unless you're really in the know (I.e. Jack).

I think one can understand both points. There does seem to be a consensus that it was usually bernard who was one way, while the other three were another in the eighties/early nineties. At least that is the sense i got, certainly not factual evidence, but certainly evidence of the circumstantial sort.

Today, I get the sense that the problem is what it has always been, Barney and Peter are basically the leaders of the band and both couldn't be more different in terms of temperment and in terms of communication styles, and because of this, it appears inevitable that they will begin to break apart eventually quite consistently whenever they spend too long together. What shocks me is that they were able to hold it together throughout their twenties, basically '76-'89, considering the temperments and communication styles and basic personalities I would've imagine they would have imploded rather early, perhaps Ian's death cemented a bond that might have broken instead if he had lived? Pure speculation of course, I'm not sure, but I do think that noone is at fault for this. The truth really seems to be that this was in many ways like a marriage, between two people who might care for eachother deeply, but also might be so fundamentally different in their personalities that eventually it was inevitable that things would fall to pieces.

I've never been sure how Stephen and in the past Gillian fit in, though I think "The Other two" is a bit suggestive. How it impacted things when it became essentially three founders working with a rented scrub (Phil) maybe have hurt a balance there as well, or hell it may have helped too. That is the thing about them basically being 50, when you reach that age, it's a time period in which you basically run one of two ways, like in a marriage that is stalled, you think "Im comfortable, if a bit unhappy at times, but I also know how to let things go and deal so I'll just find my joy", and then there is also, "Im 50, Im more than halfway done, Ive put 20+ years into this shit, I'm past this and want to find my own way and do my own thing and not deal with the nonsense anymore", and it does sound like they basically went the latter way.

Of course this is pure speculation, and theorizing, nothing based in a core reality necessarily, just me thinking out loud about it.
