Very sad news. We all owe AHW a debt of gratitude for what he did for music and for Manchester. I'll tell my mum tonight - she will be gutted, cos she really fancies him. She purposely spilt her drink on him one afternoon many years ago when I took her out for lunch in Dukes 92. The thought of having him for my step dad was quite cool...
Just had a text telling me about this. It was almost inevitable I guess once the chemo failed, but even though I've been expecting it for months it still comes as a great shock. I don't know what else to say right now.
Just heard on 5 news...fuck cancers a real big shit of a disease, I hope wherever he ends up that there will be a continual 24hr party(no pun intended)

His cancer was responding well to treatment but obviously did contribute to his poor health. He was determined to fight for funding for Sutent and it is especially sad that he has passed away as we seemed to be making some progress in the campaign. His efforts were for the people coming after him so it was very generous and not easy for him because he was so unwell. I hope that we will be able to continue what he has started.”

not entirely unexpected but still gutting...The thing about Tony was that he was always sincere and could always be relied upon to be sardonic and witty and always dead right on everything, he was the apex of good taste.
This was a man who consistently defended the cause of Manchester and its music without ever jumping on a bandwagon.
Fookin great that he got a decent tribute on the BBC news and on newsnight who gave it the attention it deserved.

Feels like I've been kicked in the heart. Angry & upset at how so many people involved in the JD/NO story are exiting early. Just got home and seen Chrissy's message on MySpace.Shocked and upset. I shouldn't be shocked,he looked fucking ill the last photo I saw of him with Leonard Cohen,I hardly recognised him. But I honestly thought we would see him around a lot longer. Recently read the book accompanyment to 24 Hour Party People,a great testament to his wit,and very funny read. If you haven't read it yet....you should read more. Nothing else to say but Tony,you'll be sorely missed. Too big for death.

Really really sad news about Tony..... and a part of me is a bit pissed off about the NHS not providing him with the necessary treatment that he needed just to at least give him a bit longer. Bastards. I hope they have this now forever on their conscience - considering how bands and friends were clubbing together to try and raise some cash to buy the treatment for him. This is just so tragic. He will definitely be missed - a real spokesman and key figure in music and broadcasting. can't say any more than that. Yet another reason why New Order should just grow the fuck up and quit this pathetic "split" spat that is going on I guess..... :(

57, just like my father. Shit, 9 years ago I was outside the Apollo with Rob and Tony and it's freaky to have already lost them. God people are still so young at that age, they're not supposed to miss the next two decades or something, are they? He has been relatively lucky. Dying of a heart attack after a few months during which he has still been able to walk around and kept his brain sane, could have been much worse. I honestly expect Peter and Bernard to remember where they come from. Their childish arguments mean nothing now. I'm not expecting anything special, just some sign of unity in a moment like this. Then, in a few months, they can kick each other in the balls if they wish. But now please behave like true men from the Manchester of Factory, the label which has released at least the half of my favourite albums (not only albums, I was listening to 52nd Street yesterday knowing nothing about these sad news). I last spoke to him in Newcastle last year, and as ever, he always great value. I totally refute this 'twat' thing. Opinionated, passionate, outspoken, stylish, mad, and a bit arrogant. Don't we all wish we were a bit like that.
I remember him doing a reading of 24 Hr Party People in Borders on Oxford Street right next to the children's book section and lots of plenty well-to-do middle class parents with their Barnabies and Jemimas in tow. Tony chose to read out very loudly, possibly the most expletive heavy section of the book right across the store. I actually winced, but thought 'fuck, he really doesn't give a shit'.
Tony was punk right through.
I'll miss the fucker.
He made an impact on Manchester and it's music that is difficult to measure. That being said, I'm surprised at how affected I feel about hearing of his passing. Sad news indeed.
Perhaps "rest in peace" is not appropriate. Considering his gift of gab, and the music he was so passionate about, may he continue to make noise.

I was in London when I heard last night and none of the southern gobshites I was with could understand why I was so devastated.
I bumped into him at the New Order LCC gig in 2002 whilst wearing my promo only 24hr PP t-shirt, the one with Coogan and the word "TWAT" underneath. He said "where did you get that fucking t-shirt?". I will admit to crapping myself (not literally) until he said "because I'm going to America next week to promote the film and I want to wear it". He sent me his business card by mobile with his home phone number, email, etc. And you know what the coolest thing was? It came onto my phone with the factory logo. And you know what the uncoolest thing was? I got so hammered that when New Order came on witn Love Vig I jumped around so much I lost my phone for ever.......
YOu know you've been badly affected by this when you're prepared to listen to even Richard Madely's remeniscences on Mr Wilson without cynicism. Just gutting. If all the world had Tony's optimism in this life this would surely be better place.

well tonys passing is sad indeed. but as many have said,the guy was a ledgend,even in his own lifetime,which is an acheivment in itself. in many ways he lives on,through the bands that he promoted (we all know em),the ledgend of the haceinda,the artwork of saville. but for me it will allways be factory. why? because when u look at the music industry today,with bands using myspace,face book,u tube,blogs ect although ah had nothing to do with the inception of any of them,the spirit in which they r used is. factory took little known bands that would never have got a deal in a million yrs and gave them an outlet. the indie labels of the time where the myspace of their time in a way and wilson was at the forefront of it. he always said that his own generation never understood him. he was right,his heart was always young and thats why he should be mourned n missed. he may be gone but he lives on,not a bad epitath eh.
to some he was a friend, to some he was a foe, but in the end he was more than a friend; someone's father/dad, husband and brother. R.I.P.

He cultivated an image as a wanker, he made some awful decisions, he lost all his money, but my God, his legacy will live on.

Found out in the Lass O Gowrie at about 11pm on Friday. A Few of us spent an hour or so re counting our favourite Wilson memories, some having quite a few more than me.
I think ultimately, my favorourite was the interview he did for North West Tonight with Dave Guest when he had been diagnosed "No, I'm not worried, i have absolute total faith in the health service in Manchester" And you genuinely believed him as well.
Not too sure about a memorial gig but hopefully there will be some kind of memorial service for the people who didnt know him to go along a pay their respects.
Strangest memory i have is one night in the Hacienda i rememver him serving behind the bar. In reality he probably only did it for 10 minutes, but he was there, laughing and joking with people who lesser celebs would look down on.

From what I’ve seen of Tony on tv he seemed to me a very friendly and intelligent man full of charm and humour. No doubt he will be missed by many. I think it’s a sad thing that once again his optimism has left him rewardless in the end…
I found out in the middle of a Festival on Friday and there was a definite mood change within the group.
Throughout my childhood and teens he was always on the box. Met him in Dukes once, he was a great guy. It's a pity that a heart attack put an end to it when he was responding well to treatment.

One of the most remarkable features of the reaction to AHW's death is the sheer number of condolence posts on the BBC, MEN and other websites. At times (especially pre internet) it was easy to think that Factory enthusiasts were few and far between - but the responses show that Wilson's various projects (and his personality) made an impact on a huge number of people - Mancunians obviously, but many others far and wide. The official reaction from the City - flag at half mast, willingess to consider many memorial projects - is also an impressive recognition.
My record collection would be a lot poorer without his label, so much respect to the man.
It shows how influential he was by the number of respects coming in from all over the world. If you check a wide varity of music websites, Happy Mondays, Enter Shikari, Pet Shop Boys all completely different but all have a notice of tribute to Tony on them.

Stephen Morris: 'We wouldn't have made it without Tony Wilson' New Order/Joy Division drummer recalls life with the Factory legend 2 hours ago New Order's Stephen Morris has spoken to NME.COM at length following the death of Tony Wilson.
The Manchester legend signed Morris' first band Joy Division to his Factory Records label, and then continued to support the group and release its records after they became New Order following frontman Ian Curtis' suicide in 1980.
Wilson passed away on August 10 after battling with kidney cancer, something that the drummer admitted had shocked him.
"We were told that Tony had been given the last rites. And I didn't think he was that bad," he explained. "Then at tea time on Friday (10) I got a call from (Factory co-founder) Alan Erasmus, which was a shock anyway because I'd not heard from him in about 15 years. And he told me that Tony had just died. And I was shocked, double shocked.
"It was very fast. I saw him three weeks ago at a wedding, and I saw pictures of him at Coachella (where he introduced Happy Mondays onstage). He was obviously ill and he had a very ill-advised beard, but Tony was still there. We were chatting about Neil Young at the Palace Theatre, and he seemed alright. Which is why I'm quite surprised that it's happened as quick as it has done really. I heard he was getting taken back to hospital, but that's one of the things about cancer, it's up and down a bit. The whole thing's been really quick because he was only diagnosed just before Christmas."
Morris then recalled the impact Wilson had on his bands and the first time he had met the local TV presenter turned record label boss.
"When it started out, everyone knew Tony because he was on telly, reading the news," said Morris.
"He was the hippy guy who was kind of on your wavelength, and he did the 'What's On' programme. He was obviously listening to the same kind of music that we did. And then at a concert one night Bernard (Sumner) spotted him. Ian (Curtis) harangued him mercilessly for not putting us on television, because he'd had the Buzzcocks on, and I remember Ian really laying into him going 'You're a right twat Wilson, you are,' and I think that impressed Tony more than anything. We gave him a copy of 'An Ideal For Living' (the band's debut EP as Warsaw) and he played it on 'What's On'. And the next thing you know... you can trace It all back to that one chaotic gig at Rafters. That was where it all started."
Morris admitted that without Wilson's input neither of his bands would have been likely to succeed.
"We definitely wouldn't have become what we did, definitely not," he declared. "I can tell you that without a shadow of a doubt. So many other things wouldn't have become what they are. Manchester wouldn't have become what it is without him. Things would have been so different."

This is bizarre and why would Bernard give a toss what anyone on NOOL thinks? That's part of why I like him and probably why others on here clearly don't; he's not a slave to how the fans want him to behave or has a blog. I love the idea he might say something that would fuck off some fans... it's what makes New Order such a good band to be into. They don't (or didn't) give a fuck.
As it happens, despite all that went on I reckon Barney would have nothing but simple condolences to offer regarding Tony's passing but I'm not bothered that he hasn't said anything.

I remember first seeing Tony on Granada Reports when I was growing up - the epitomy of cool and proper Manchester soul man. He brought great music to the masses and influenced so many people - a rare combination of talent and twat rolled into an amazingly refreshing individual who gave so much from his love of music.
RIP Tony - you will be missed and never equalled. I shed a tear - does not happen too often to me, and if any of the boys are reading - play a final gig so we can celebrate JD , NO , Mondays, etc and Tony, pleaaaaaase.

Vini is I better health now thanks and whilst he is obviously saddened by Tony¹s passing he seemed to be more reflective than morose regarding it when I spoke to him in the week. He has been asked to be a pall-bearer by the family too.
I know he saw him on the day he died and he told me that Tony Wilson was in good spirits to the end he was surely dogged enough for us all to appreciate that.
What a man it is hard to quantify what he has achieved or been the catalyst for.
