Joined this site especially to pay tribute to the great man, he was very important in our lives giving us a truly great indie label that all others followed. Also gave us the greatest group of all time New Order / Joy Division. RIP and massive respect. ...out
One of the most remarkable features of the reaction to AHW's death is the sheer number of condolence posts on the BBC, MEN and other websites. At times (especially pre internet) it was easy to think that Factory enthusiasts were few and far between - but the responses show that Wilson's various projects (and his personality) made an impact on a huge number of people - Mancunians obviously, but many others far and wide. The official reaction from the City - flag at half mast, willingess to consider many memorial projects - is also an impressive recognition.
My record collection would be a lot poorer without his label, so much respect to the man.
It shows how influential he was by the number of respects coming in from all over the world. If you check a wide varity of music websites, Happy Mondays, Enter Shikari, Pet Shop Boys all completely different but all have a notice of tribute to Tony on them.

Sorry if this is posted anywhere already, am at work so can't check! Was it Barney's wedding that Steve is referring to? And proof that Alan Erasmus is alive and kicking, even though obviously very much out of the picture in terms of new order these days.

Stephen Morris: 'We wouldn't have made it without Tony Wilson' New Order/Joy Division drummer recalls life with the Factory legend 2 hours ago New Order's Stephen Morris has spoken to NME.COM at length following the death of Tony Wilson.
The Manchester legend signed Morris' first band Joy Division to his Factory Records label, and then continued to support the group and release its records after they became New Order following frontman Ian Curtis' suicide in 1980.
Wilson passed away on August 10 after battling with kidney cancer, something that the drummer admitted had shocked him.
"We were told that Tony had been given the last rites. And I didn't think he was that bad," he explained. "Then at tea time on Friday (10) I got a call from (Factory co-founder) Alan Erasmus, which was a shock anyway because I'd not heard from him in about 15 years. And he told me that Tony had just died. And I was shocked, double shocked.
"It was very fast. I saw him three weeks ago at a wedding, and I saw pictures of him at Coachella (where he introduced Happy Mondays onstage). He was obviously ill and he had a very ill-advised beard, but Tony was still there. We were chatting about Neil Young at the Palace Theatre, and he seemed alright. Which is why I'm quite surprised that it's happened as quick as it has done really. I heard he was getting taken back to hospital, but that's one of the things about cancer, it's up and down a bit. The whole thing's been really quick because he was only diagnosed just before Christmas."
Morris then recalled the impact Wilson had on his bands and the first time he had met the local TV presenter turned record label boss.
"When it started out, everyone knew Tony because he was on telly, reading the news," said Morris.
"He was the hippy guy who was kind of on your wavelength, and he did the 'What's On' programme. He was obviously listening to the same kind of music that we did. And then at a concert one night Bernard (Sumner) spotted him. Ian (Curtis) harangued him mercilessly for not putting us on television, because he'd had the Buzzcocks on, and I remember Ian really laying into him going 'You're a right twat Wilson, you are,' and I think that impressed Tony more than anything. We gave him a copy of 'An Ideal For Living' (the band's debut EP as Warsaw) and he played it on 'What's On'. And the next thing you know... you can trace It all back to that one chaotic gig at Rafters. That was where it all started."
Morris admitted that without Wilson's input neither of his bands would have been likely to succeed.
"We definitely wouldn't have become what we did, definitely not," he declared. "I can tell you that without a shadow of a doubt. So many other things wouldn't have become what they are. Manchester wouldn't have become what it is without him. Things would have been so different."

Too bad you never came down here to Panama and see this beautiful country but I would like Hooky and Barney to come down here and settle their differences. Well, that is just a pipe dream and also a chance to promote tourism in my country, but my regards go to the Factory family on this occasion and to the people of Manchester who supported Tony.

I'm not attacking Bernard and I'm not saying that he absolutely has to say anyhing; But considering that so many prominent manchester and music industry types and have paid tribute in the press, I don't think its an unfair expectation to have heard from Barney. That's all.
On a lighter note, i can imagine Tony getting to heaven only to be met at the gates by Rob Gretton, fag in mouth going "You bastard Tony, they (new order) get some decent media attention and you have to upstage them. Always the fucking same, oh and thanks for leaving me here with Ian for the past 8 years, the twats smoked all me fags."

This is bizarre and why would Bernard give a toss what anyone on NOOL thinks? That's part of why I like him and probably why others on here clearly don't; he's not a slave to how the fans want him to behave or has a blog. I love the idea he might say something that would fuck off some fans... it's what makes New Order such a good band to be into. They don't (or didn't) give a fuck.
As it happens, despite all that went on I reckon Barney would have nothing but simple condolences to offer regarding Tony's passing but I'm not bothered that he hasn't said anything.
We're back into "Hooky's me best mate because he wave to me during his DJ set whereas Barney's simply a cunt" territory then. I'd love to know what you base these outbursts on; where's your evidence?
You whined and whinged with indignation about "the fans turning on Hooky" after a few bits of criticism were thrown at his MySpace blogs yet it suits you down to the ground to lay into Barney and second-guess him at every opportunity.
I don't think it's fair for fans to turn on either Bernard or Hooky without knowing what went on with the recent split. Some fans seem to have adopted a "Hooky's a god/Barney's a cunt" or vice versa and it's really quite sad.
More than a whiff of hypocrisy
