Details of the Control OST have now emerged. The album, scheduled for release on 1st October, includes three brand new tracks from New Order, a cover of Transmission by the cast (presume that's the JD actors) and The Killers' cover of Shadowplay.

The New Order tracks are titled, 'Exit', 'Get Out' and 'Hypnosis'. It would be cynical to speculate that Bernard wrote these for Hooky .

Full Tracklisting:

  1. Exit - New Order
  2. What Goes On - The Velvet Underground
  3. Shadowplay (Joy Division cover) - The Killers
  4. Boredom (Live) - The Buzzcocks
  5. Dead Souls - Joy Division
  6. She Was Naked - Supersister
  7. Sister Midnight - Iggy Pop
  8. Love Will Tear Us Apart - Joy Division
  9. Problems (Live) - Sex Pistols
  10. Hypnosis - New Order
  11. Drive In Saturday - David Bowie
  12. Evidently Chickentown - John Cooper Clarke
  13. 2H.B. - Roxy Music
  14. Transmission (Cast Version) - Joy Division
  15. Autobahn - Kraftwerk
  16. Atmosphere - Joy Division
  17. Warszawa - David Bowie
  18. Get Out - New Order

Thanks to David Sultan.

Ps Jack, so what do these new tracks sound like?, got any vocals on 'em?.

aye

My guess on "Hypnosis" is that is the background music for when Barney tries to hynotize Ian (to get him out of his funk), is this in the movie?

Er...I thought that the soundtrack was going to be done by Barney Pete and Steve as JD? I guess JD but still called NO....so are these the last ever new NO tracks ever???

PLEASE DON'T LET THEM BE DUDS!!!

Given this list is true----I like the tracklist so far----with the exception of the Killers cover. (I have nothing against the idea of them liking New Order---after all, they took their name from the 'Crystal' video, but I hate their music.)

So, I'll probably refuse to listen to the Killers track, but I'll be listening to the other tracks, though.

Even though I like the Killers, I was a little hesitant when I heard they were going ot cover Shadowplay for the soundtrack. It just did not seem to fit the music they write. Soundwise, I can see why They would play the song (being influenced by New order, Like so many of this groups). I would have picked Interpol or The national myself.

Having said that, I had a chance to see the killers live in Florida this year. And they did play a live version of their remake of shadowplay.

Result: I was pleaseantly surprised. I have to see how the album version ends up sounding like.

I have to admit, I cannot help but to feel a little down this days. It is so hard to talk about Joy Division and New Order without thinking... F$%^& they broke up!!!! :(

The new tracks are interesting and I'm looking forward to hearing them again in isolation.

There was a bit of a discussion about them here.

There's very little in the way of vocals on them although I think one had some speech samples floating through it ala the Peter Saville Soundtrack.

As for the earlier version of the soundtrack, I'm not sure whether there'll be two versions or just the new one as per above. This was the original tracklisting:

Drive-in Saturday - David Bowie 2hb - Roxy Music The Jean Genie - David Bowie Sister Midnight - Iggy Pop Problems (live) - Sex Pistols No Love Lost - Joy Division Evidently Chicken Town - John Cooper Clarke Leaders Of Men - "Joy Moviesion" Boredom - The Buzzcocks Digital - "Joy Moviesion" Transmission - "Joy Moviesion" Insight - "Joy Moviesion" She's Lost Control - "Joy Moviesion" Candidate - "Joy Moviesion" What Goes On - Velvet Underground Disorder - "Joy Moviesion" Atmosphere - Joy Division Shadowplay - The Killers

"Joy Moviesion" being Sam Riley and cast who play the songs live during the film.

Probably just some discrepancy between what was heard in an early cut and what is getting a formal release.

Steve was probably still pasting the loops together on his Mac at midnight before the Cannes premiere.

Can't complain that they scrapped most of the cast covers and replaced them with the NO incidentals and Kraftwerk.

Yes, it is. I saw the film on Sunday in Edinburgh, I actually remember thinking that the music in that scene was really good so it's nice to find out that it's one of the new NO ones rather than something else that I just didn't recognise.

Really good film by the way, audience reaction seemed overwhelmingly positive.

Two years to make three instrumentals! Boys you spoil us.

Some notes from JD Central on the soundtrack:

The three New Order tracks are the instrumental tracks used in the last third of the film. They consist of Hooky's trademark bass lines, some sparse drumming from Morris, and Sumner playing what sounds like a flute sound on a mellotron - not particularly in the style of Joy Division, as was previously mooted.

The tracks are not in the order of how they appear on the film.

James Anthony Pearson confirmed at the film Q & A that it is the cast version of Transmission that appears on the soundtrack album.

John Cooper Clarke's track was recited live by the man himself on set - Anton Corbjin chose him as "he is the only person who looks the same as he did 30 years ago - in fact he's probably thinner".

Two strange things about the soundtrack -

Both here and on the film credits "Sister Midnight" is mentioned. Unless it was playing quietly in the background I cannot recall hearing this in the film.

One definite error - the inclusion of Joy Division's "Dead Souls" - the version of "Dead Souls" in the film was played by the cast, and the genuine Joy Division songs in the movie are LWTUA, Atmosphere (both featured here) and No Love Lost (strangely absent).

I thought there was a rumour at one stage that the Control Soundtrack was going to bundle in the leftover tracks from WFTSC. I guess we can forget about that now.

The reissue of Joy Division's Substance CD with a bonus DVD of HATYM has been cancelled too. All the interesting releases seem to be going by the wayside.

That's it?? 3 tracks?? The way they touted it was like they were doing the whole soundtrack, I was expecting a whole CD of score and songs.

And what happened to all the contemporary bands covering JD?

Those 3 instrumentals had better be good!

Budget, surely.

The Killers and the band in the movie with Sam Reiley at vocals is what we'll get.

It's not a big budget movie, don't expect miracles.

Cool, thanks for confirming that. I can't wait until this movie & soundtrack hits the States!

Indeed, nice to get a bit of KW in there, it certainly is an important part of the story musically and fits in well with the film. When myself, the LadyB and DC saw Control a few weeks back, our reviews (via DC's link above) discussed one of the NO instrumentals (presumably 'Exit') as:

CTB wrote: The incidental music (simply stated in the credits as being 'by New Order') was enjoyable, but won't be troubling anyone’s 'top 5 NO tracks' list on future posts here. One NO track of particular resonance is a very atmospheric piece composed of slow piano chords interspersed with a very simple 2-3 note Hooky riff and barely-there percussion. Great stuff, but think Salvation meets Saville Show for comparison...

Casting the mind back, the hypnosis scene had probably the best of the new music that I remember...although I am struggling to recall it being much other than 'really good'. Looking forward to the soundtrack anyway (and it seems I'm in the minority for not giving a toss about The Killers being on it - why does this matter exactly?) - thanks for the news anyway JG, and hope you are well. Cheers CTB

I'm not a Killers fan (in fact I don't like them) by the way, so just looking at the soundtrack listing, if the soundtrack is released with those exact same tracks, I for sure, will be skipping the Killers track.

But that's just my opinion, and of course, after the soundtrack is released, we all have the right to listen to whatever tracks we wish to.

Jeez, whats all these bad raps about the Killers..duh!

I'll be seeing them live in November. And next month I'll be seeing NIN, hopefully Steve's remixed bits get an airing.

Btw, I just saw Fat Bob & The Cure a fortnight ago - absolutely awesome, 3-hours plus of gothic drone including many rarely-played tracks from early releases...very unlike the karaoke-roadshow of some Mancunian trio churning out standard setlists for every recent gigs, ouch..

I've found a lot of people like the Killers version of Shadowplay. Mind you, they aren't New Order or Joy Division fans persay so they aren't partial/snobby about it.

It's not about being partial or snobby.

It's just a shit cover by a shit band.

Nah, those are probably old songs that they've recorded that didn't make it in any of the albums or B-sides of the singles.

Let's just hope, even though it didn't made the cut on their albums and/or singles, the tracks would be... good.

Indeed*!*

Why are people getting so precious about The Killers?

They're a decent pop band, the kids love 'em, their song only appears over the credits, who cares. Million times better than most of the manufactured pap that rules the charts these days.

Having them on the record probably makes the soundtrack viable and gives it a chance of turning a buck. And with any luck it may turn a young listener onto the superior bands on the album.

...and even then, Depthy, it appears in the latter part of the end credits after Atmosphere, well after all but the most devoted nosepickers have scarpered to the lobby for their choctops - so what I mean to say is, it's not exactly an obtrusive presence in the film.

If so-called unworthy covers of JD tracks offends so many folks round here, why were there so many entries on Community I and II? Trust me, there was some fairly dire shite on there. CTB :bear:

Exit and Get Out - isn't that the same thing??!! I suppose it shows where their thinking has been recently.

Looks like a good track listing overall.

I didn't know that LWTUA was going to be re-released (Again!) but here it's mentioned onwww.entertainment.ie

Joy Division Fest 24 August 2007 Joy Division's classic single 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is to be re-released next month. The song, probably the band's best-known track, was Joy Division's final single which was released before the death of frontman Ian Curtis in 1980. It reached number 13 in the charts upon its initial release, and re-entered in 1983, reaching number 19. It was re-released in 1995, where it hit number 19 yet again. The entire Joy Division back catalogue is also set to be reissued with extra material next month. Both studio albums - Closer and Unknown Pleasures - will feature additional CDs of live material, and the live/rarities compilation Still will also feature additional material. The revival coincides with the release of Anton Corbijn-directed biopic based on Ian Curtis's life, 'Control', which is released on October 5th. Pitchfork reports that another documentary based on the band, entitled 'Joy Division', will also premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month.Joy Division Oven Gloves, anyone?

Those notes taken from the Joy Division central website were mine.

"Exit", "Hypnosis" and "Get Out" are all named after the scenes where they are featured - "Exit" and "Hypnosis" are obvious - "Get Out" is featured during and after the final talk Ian has with Debbie, when he yells at her to "GET OUT"!

Incidentally - for those in London - there will be a special preview of "Control" at the BFI Southbank (formerly the National Film Theatre) on October 4th. Tickets are available to non NFT/BFI members from Sept 7th and are £8.60 each.

Re the earler version of the soundtrack....

Outside of the New Order instrumentals - this is actually the sequential track listing of the songs in the film

I'm still curious as to why they've replaced Joy Division's "No Love Lost" with "Dead Souls" on the album - the only time "Dead Souls" was played in the film was by the cast. Ok - "No Love Lost" was featured without the vocals, but it was in the film.....

whatever happened to the idea that NO was recording as JD?

Only really true in the fact that Phil Cunningham was not included in these three tracks

Interesting. However, as both Joy Division and New Order have covered Sister Ray, surely that would have been the better choice of the Velvet Underground tracks to choose from.

I enjoyed the scene in the film where they're recording 'Isolation'. You obviously hear the 'natural' version, i.e. before Martin Hannett's superb post-production work. I think either version (assuming the former exists) should have been on the album.

It made me laugh when Bernard switches off the monitor output on the mixing desk, after Martin kicks him out the studio for being noisy! I bet this really happened!

I agree with earlier comments about how nice it was to hear Autobahn, especially that part of the track, which was incredibly far ahead of anything else at the time (what a bassline!). Perhaps it should have been played when you saw JD 'on the road' driving south.

It seemed a bit obvious when Atmosphere was played near the end - at the same point in the story to when '24 Hour Party People' played the same track. They could have chosen other 'melancholy' tunes, e.g. Eternal.

Top film, but a bit sad.

I thought the synths sounded a bit seaside end of pier organish in that scene!! Still good though.Annik looked particularly beautiful sitting there listening, too

Was that actually a cover version of Autobahn in that scene? It sounded fresher and different to the Kraftwerk original... Don't think it was 'The Mix' mix either. Not got the soundtrack but had a listen on the Control website and it's the original Kraftwerk version on there

I agree , it seemed too obvious to have Atmosphere at that point.Could have done with something else, a new 'melancholy' incidental music?

Loved the movie. Please, can anybody say, which song is playing almost at the beginning of the movie, after 'sex pistols' gig, when "Ian" is on the street, going to work, lighting a cig and then HATE appears written on his back? the rhythm is not similar to Transmission, at first glance I thought it was the song, but no : /

thanks in advance.

yes yes, that's the song! thank you very much Burt Reynolds, indeed. i tried all the songs i had and the reason i didn't find it was that i don't have "No Love Lost". it wasn't on any of their albums (well, those 2), was it? it is beautiful.
