BBC4 will be showing 'Factory: Manchester from Joy Division to Happy Mondays' this Friday at 9pm. I'll record it from DVB and set up a weed or something for those who won't be able to watch it.
Looks like it will feature AHW alongside the Mondays, New Order, Durutti Column plus other bands/DJs from Factory & The Hacienda.

Or is just a case of Wilson being dead now and everyone thinking they actually liked all his label's stuff ... forgetting that they genuinely didn't (er, like all his label's stuff).
I mean, who else is there?
Lets be frank, the Mondays have been slated here in the past. They don't seem to have 'travelled' well abroad and some of the older British fans have cocked their noses up at their laddishness and drug-taking.
And I'll be first to admit that the Mondays Mk III, or whatever they are now, just aren't the Mondays any more, bar in name alone.
ACR have been basically ignored on this site too. There can't be more than half-a-dozen of us who post regularly (actually I'm being kind saying half-a-dozen here) who bother with them nowadays. Or probably even listen to them.
Vini gets his plaudits but I'm not a fan myself. I get the impression people like the idea of Vini more than his music itself. Sit down and try and stick his records on and they bore you to tears three tracks in.
Who the fcuk is 'Factory' after that then?
I presume the only other acts people really liked were the Side Projects?!
I mean, I ask you: 52nd Street, Crispy Ambulance, The Wendys, Kalima, Minny Pops, Northside, Railway Children, The Adventure Babies, Section 25, Swamp Children, Quando Quango.
All had their moments (er, well, some of them) but not really 'all that' to write home about, shirley?!
Factory was a lovely idea. But a lot of the music was just shite.
(And, yes, I will still be in Brussels in December blah blah blah

I agree with AL here.Most of the other bands were CRAP.I tried to watch some of the early factory videos and it HURT.But to me FACTORY was just Joy Division and NEW ORDER.And some great ARTWORK.The rest of it just washed over me.MONDAYs and NORTHSIDE had a few good tunes too.But each to their own.

I really tried to get into the other acts and bought as many Factory bands records as I could. But they're shit. Some of them are really shit and painful to listen to: Section 25 first album, Quando Quango (FFS!!) and agreed about Durutti Column, some beautiful music there but can't listen to a whole side. In fact I recently tried again to like it all by playing it. It really was a painful waste of time.
And I bought a collection of Factory videos from the 80s collected onto two DVDs. I was going to weed it on but the quality (of the music) is so poor I thought I'd save everyone the bother
There are a few hidden gems though. Royal Family and the Poors first album is a lost "classic" IMHO and Streetlifes Act on Instinct I love. And a few 52nd Street songs- but they left and went to major because of Factorys mismanagement of them.
So what we seem to be saying is that Factory Records was a great idea and smashing artwork.

I dunno... the Palatine CDs still get pretty regular rotation on my iPod... particularly disc 2.
I see what you mean, though. It's kinda rare that I'll actually listen to a whole album by one of the "b-list" bands.
Your Durutti Column example is spot on. I think Sketch for Summer is one of the loveliest tracks touched by Hannett, and enjoy it when it comes up on Palatine disc 1, but I don't ever listen to Return of DC... or any of his albums really.
I genuinely like much of ACR's early output, but I typically just listen to the Soul Jazz Early compilation rather than their actual albums. Section 25 were kinda hit or miss... mostly miss... but I actually do listen to From the Hip every once in a while. Always Now is really nice to look at and think of as a lovely object, but don't bother playing it.
I'm also a proud owner of Fac 2, which I think of as the crown jewel of my record collection. But has anyone ever tried listening to it? Yeek...
So yeah... the records are more collectables than listenables. Most of the bands were great for a single or two and that's about it. There were some great little gems here and there, though, which the compilations are good for.

I think the two women are Cath Carroll and Liz Naylor (not sure if it is Liz though). No idea about the bloke, sorry!

I do like that Cath Carroll track "moves like you". Maybe I should make a point of doing Palatine in a single sitting some time.
So what was factory beyond "our" band? The attitude, the dreams, the myths, and not much else. Factory is dead, long live Factory. I still half blame Wilson and NO for me working in a call centre instead of touring the world as a bassgod....they instilled such a contempt for "the biz" in me that I never recovered, and probablt cost myself many a brilliant opportunity as a result.

Cath Carrol (Miaow and solo artist) and Liz Naylor (fanzine / journo type) as per Sam's post.
The guy is, I believe, Richard Boon but I'm prepared to be corrected.
He was a player on the Manchester music scene at the time, was Buzzcocks manager and had a hand in the New Hormones label amongst other things.
Interesting Post Jarvo (from yesterday). Wneh i told me lass i Needed the TV on Fri night she said 'you only bother wasting money on ACR & the Mondays' However the chance to possibly see a snippet of interview footage etc.. from someone i really admire like Paul Ryder, DoJo, Simon Topping, etc.. makes the 90min 'pain' bearable.
Further to Mick's post - i watched the old Icon videos last wk-end ( Factory Outing/Compilation etc.) and it reaffirmed to me how utterly Shit most of the Factory roster was - even the latter shit (Ad/Babies..) Dire
Tend to think a lot of people have put the erstwhile Anthony H Wilson on too high a pedastal.
I always thought his views & ideas on regional government, Pennine Lancashire etc.. more engaging than 'his' bands.

ACR are wonderful, don't forget OMD, James... loads of em.
Yeah obviously not every Factory artist was as good as the other, but Factory did a lot more than just be a record label. So programme will be deffo worth watching I'm sure.

Nothing we didn't already know, but the sheer mayhem of what was the Fac/Hac story being re-told in little anecdotes like that was sublime.
Laughed out loud on countless occassions, AHW was on top form along with New Order and Shaun Ryder.
Thought it was very moving also, tears in my eyes at times.
Qualidee stuff.
Oh, and as if it needed proven, Joy Division/New Order are the greatest band of all time.

To clarify Simon, you need to reach 100 posts before you can access the weeding forum. This is basically a forum which the kind souls on here share gigs, tv performances etc with each other. The forum is called Thieves Like Us.

Possibly, but my sibling missed the first 40 seconds, and when I tried to watch what he was recording, the sound was all over the place.....I will have to check in the mornin, whilst sharpening a large knife.
Don't worry someone will have capped it.
I will check what I have in the morning when I get home, the sound sync may have just been because I was watching the stream while it was being recorded to. As my bro pointed out to me, his DVB card, just dumps the mpeg transport stream straight to disc, so sound sync problems are impossible. He was of course shitfaced at the time, so telling him "yes, but when you start playing it the sound is 2 seconds off and that gap just gets longer and longer", just got me a blank stare.
And this after a debate not two days ago on whether his recorder script could be trusted to tape the qualifyin for the Jap GP next week, as I will be in work. Last year he said "no worries, of course it'll work, it always works". I got home to find that it had indeed begun recording at 0500, and exited straight away leaving a 0byte file. Think I will take the night off this year and bill him for lost earnings
The thing is, I was taping the fac doc myself tonight, but had to abort the recording so I could watch it when I realised my bro's recording wasn't going to plan. While I could have started watching what I'd already got, you cannae skip through it until it's finished, and since only one program can read from the TV card at a time, I had to stop recording to watch it live (or start watching from the start again). My recording would have been pants anyway, low bandwidth and from an analogue capture card (no point getting a digital one, as I have Sky-tv, and therefor could not use them together).

My thoughts on the documentary as well. Alright it wasn't really telling me anything new about Factory but an enjoyable 90 minutes all the same something of a visual representation of the Urbis Hacienda exhibition. Does anyone reckon the BBC may release it as a DVD as I've kind of got the impression they may?

I thought it was a great documentry. Nothing new to anybody on this board but put together very well, made me laugh out loud and very touching at times. For a casual observer of Factory this would have been a very informative and showed people how important Factory was (is). No other good bands on Factory? Well they had more decent bands than most labels. NO/JD/Revenge/other two/Electronic/ OK same set of people but quality music. Section 25 "from the Hip" is a brilliant album. Mondays 1st three albums, Cath caroll, OMD etc etc. What other labels can boast a fine selection? The other best labels were influenced by Factory anyway such as Creation. Factory also had coolness and collectability. Factory were a record collectors dream. It would be bnice if other labels took time out to make their "product" worth having with great packaging like Factory.

Factory never really 'had' OMD did they though, really? One single (which was re-released elsewhere by DinDisc very quickly) hardly adds to the Factory myth does it?

I don't know about you Mick, but I listen to music with my ears not my eyes. Yes, the videos were shite but that ain't the point.
Let's start with the good bands: (One's I regularly listen to)
That's not a bad hit list for a small label from the north of England. Lots of other bands that did some interesting stuff Miaow / Cath Caroll (moves like you) Kalima (The Smiling Hour) The Other Two (Tasty Fish), Cabaret Voltaire (Yashar!), RFATP (We love the Moon) Minny Pops / Streetlife (Act on Instinct) fucking loads
I also think the artwork was way ahead of all those other shitty 'independent' labels (honourable excepton 4AD) and that makes Factory iconic in my eyes - that attention to detail - great music in great covers.
That's why it deserved the documentary, Factory raised the profile of MCR (along with it's football team) from industrial gloom to post-industrial sunshine - that's why the city mourned the lost of a minor TV celebrity.
Obviously there was some shit in there such as Revenge and Northside.

I was amazed at Shaun Ryder thats the most clear he has ever spoke. As he been on 10 years younger with those nice new capped teeth, he only looks 50 now. What was with the posh voive he was doing? Going to see the Mondays in Notts on Thursday so I'll see if he still looks the same, if he can sing I'll know they;ve got an actor in. Shoudl be a good laugh though. Yeah OMD only did the one single, but a good one thogh and I forgot about Caberet Voltaire. Long live the factory revivial!!

I enjoyed it. As posted above, nothing new was revealed or suggested, but it was a class 90 minutes of music television, and I bet a newcomer would have found it very informative.
One minor gripe. Why did they keep saying "Duritti Column" as though they were mixing Vini Reilly up with Green Gartside?

Have only just managed to watch it yesterday 'cos of being on hols',thought it was great personally,a really good job & did the story justice,altho' I obviously would've liked it to be more in depth,but at an hour & a half anyway,it did the job very well.Would've liked more on Ratio too,but hope there's more on the DVD( ! ).Whatever!
