Run Wild - 'Should Have Been A Single'???

I;m a "real new order fan" and love run wild, a lovely ending to an album. This song really splits NO fans judging by this post and when it was reviewed on the weekly song reviews. It was also chosen on the Box Set under the fans choice! Might set up a fan club for loving the RUN WILD TRACK. The fan club might prove that popular that we would have to release the track as a single and get to sing it on Jools Holland with a 32-piece gospel choir and Barney playing the reverend Sumner. Leave Me Alone sang New Order well leave this track alone its fookin ace.

I like it,as it goes..Not a patch on Crystal though,natch.

I actually kinda like it, apart from the Jesus references. I remember playing it in the car to random friends when Get Ready came out, and the general consensus was it should be a single because it would be a massive hit.

My feeling these days is that they liked it because it doesnt really sound like New Order with the heavy strings and backing vocals. If I played a top Hooky rock out bass driven song such as 60MPH from the album they just were not interested.

Barney has a point I think, and he might be right in a way, as it doesnt really sound like NO.

This might be why its always been rubbish live.

I think that Run Wild is a beautiful song. I like the Jesus lyrics....I think that RW is a song about loving someone and not wanting them to pass away...the line "When Jesus comes to take you hand, I won't let go" is utterly beautiful......I have actually gotten teary eyed listening to it....makes me think of my grandmother, actually. I think RW is a lovely song about...well, loving someone. Its lovely. Plus....it kinds with the greatest New Order Kiss off since ELT....."Im going to live to get high!: Hah hah! Awesome! That line got a huge cheer at the Chicago 05 show.

Now...would it have been a good single? I don't think so...and I think that Barney was kidding.

As for WIFM....I love it. Classic New Order pop song. Super catchy. Quite nice lyrics about the importance of being an individual, actually. Yes....its a bit silly but hella fun to dance to!

I love Jetstream as well. its got a beautiful melody, awesome electronics, nice vocals and production...its a classic New Order dance pop song. its quite a hit when I play it when I DJ...and I know a lot of teenagers who like it alot, believe it or not. If JET had been the first single from WFTSC...it would have done just as well as Krafty...if not a tiny bit better.

I think WFTSC is a great album. Its the one NO album besides Technique that I listen to from start to finish in a regular basis. I actually listen to WFTSC in my car more than any other New Order studio album. I like the variety it has. Plus, Whose Joe? is just tops.

Don't think so. That Itunes interview was at the same time of the 2005 gigs when they brought Run Wild into setlist out of nowhere. Clearly Bernard gives that song special importance.

Tune-wise it's not too shabby, but the lyrics are straight out of the Bernard book of cringe. Ricky Gervais as Andy Millman couldn't come up with more cringeworthy stuff!

Think there's more than a touch of fanboy overreaction in this thread. "Confirms they should've called it a day"? Naff talk.

While the Run Wild lyrics induce a wince or two, surely this is nothing new. There are some really lush layers to be heard behind them. If backing singers and overproduction are your beef, look no further than Liar from Republic. NO's absolute nadir for mine, no competition.

When NO were out here on the Get Ready tour, I asked Hooky whether there'd be another single after 60MPH. He said they wanted Run Wild. I posted this here at the time.

So if you're using this as a Bernard basher, forget it.

I really like RW, not sure it would have done that well as a single, though... Lyrically not the best, but how many NO tracks are nowadays... There's plenty of other cringeworthy moments (Rock The Shack, Slow Jam) on GR - at least with RW they did something a bit different...

I agree with what Zachery Starkey said (apart from the bit about Jetstream, which, apart from some of the dance remixes, is GASH of the highest order).

To me the fact that Run Wild is so utterly... alien in regards to the New Order back catalogue is what places it amongst the best of their work. It is emotional, it is atmospheric (especially the ambient intro on the Steve Osbourne mix) and it reveals that the Order do care after all. Can you think of a better description for New Order at their best?

All fine tunes (except TPK and TLU imho) but Run Wild offers a different side to the Order that had previously been demonstrated: a more caring and considerate side compared to the child like euphoria of Temptation, the cold alienation of Ceremony and EGG and the rubbish love songs like Paradise and Everyone Everywhere. Which is why I place RW in the company of the tracks you listed above.

I agree sir. 'Tis a beautiful tune and the lines "You're the kind of person / I always wanted to be with / You're really cool / And you always say the right things for me" and the way the way it goes on .... just bliss.

Run Wild is a lovely song...but shouldnt have been a single. Why all good songs should be singles?? sometimes it doesnt make sense to me.

Back to the topic at hand, I agree with Bernard, actually. Run Wild would have fit nicely in American top 40 - it would probably the only NO song you'd hear at a rural bar in the Bible Belt, thanks to the Jesus talk and the sentimentality of 'I won't let go.' I think that with the relatively simple sound (guitars, no synth), the slower beat and it could have gotten real nice notice by people who other wouldn't pay attention to NO. I think of Love & Rockets' So Alive - it was huge in the States and really was pretty different from what i would peg as a L&R song.

That's my 2 cents. I like Run Wild, I don't love it. I prefer the steve osbourne version

I absolutely can't stand the female backing vocals, but is it solely of Bernard's fault though? There is a handful of Monaco songs with female backing vocals so it seems that Hooky is into it too. I agree that the only female vocal that is acceptable on a New Order song is that of Gillian Gilbert. The rest ruins everything.

I don't like "Jetstream" at all, mainly because of the female vocal. I enjoy "Krafty" very much so I think they made a good choice on that song. My choices of singles are "Waiting for the Siren's Call", "Krafty" and "Turn". Those are actually the only three songs I like from the album.

I like "Get Ready" even less than "Waiting for the Siren's Call" and "Run Wild" is one of the three songs with "Crystal" and "60 Miles An Hour" that I can tolerate from the album and even then, I don't like neither of them that much.
