Had to rely on a dodgy download DVD (Thanks to John & Lorraine :thumb: )

Just shows what fucking state British cinema's are in if no fucker shows the bastard film.

After all the awards it won, you would have thought the film would be readily available in a cinema near you. How fucking wrong can you be.

Quick review, cos I am not the best with these kinda things. Liked the fact the film was shot in black and white, apparently this means it's a proper arty farty movie. That or Corbijn hadnae paid his bills.

Was weird getting used to the new faces after 24HrPP, but I thought the cast were very good, particularly Riley and Morton in the lead roles and good to see the band playing their versions of the live songs. Give it a bit of justice too.

Musta been fucking weird for Debbie with the Annik scenes, but from reading her book (and loads of other JD related books) I thought this was played out very tactfully and as close to events as can be imagined.

The only thing I think the film lacked was the real cameraderie between the band members, I know there are time restrictions on films, but we didnae see the proper craic between the band in either this film or 24hrPP.

A very moving final scene and I was happy the way this was edited. Never did like the scene in 24hrPP.

Finally I am a happy camper. But would much rather have seen this film properly in a cinema NEAR me.

Looking forward to getting the proper DVD when it's out, hopefully there's a fair whack of stuff that wasnae included in the film. And cannae wait for the JD Documentary stuff as well.

Glad you've finally seen it Shug :beer: We had real problems finding the film in a cinema either in London or Stoke when it first came out. Saw it in one of the two London cinemas showing it during the second week of release. Two weeks later, it was in all the cinemas near me and even being shown in Stoke :shug: oops, I mean :shrug:

I enjoyed the film too, but found it disappointing in the way you describe.

Looking forward to the JD documentary too, from what Hooky has said, it sounds like it will be THE film for fans of Joy Division to see.

I'd love to see a dramatised version of it too - that would make good watching - loads of music, band hi-jinks, re-creations of snippets of gigs that aren't on film, etc.

Oh well, I'm sure there'll be a few more Joy Division films... maybe even a 'New Order Story' :eek3:

I just cannae wait to see the Plan K, SLC and Bowden Vale in all it's glory. Been waiting fer fucking years for this lot :thumb:

I saw this film two nights running in London before it was on general release and my closest multiplex - MyVue at North Finchley - had it showing 6 (six!) times a day in its first week of release. That's about as much as you'd get for any general film release.

Almost 3/4 of this site, many of whom live in BIG towns/cities had to travel miles to see this bastard film. The promotion was pretty good, but showing it in minimal places throughout the country was a fucking disgrace.

Is it just me,or are most of the best films Briddish? Well they are like :nod: Not sure why this had to be in Black n White..To save a few bob, precious artistic reasons,nostalgic feel or good old fashioned coming the cunt?:scratch: I'm sure it'll be a good watch,whatever.

It's basically a minority film, possibly bordering on arthouse. I really don't understand what people expected - Joy Division weren't the Simpsons, were they?! Surely cinemas showed films according to the number of people they figured they'd get in. Which, in most parts of the country, was basically fcuk all. That's the bottom line.

Will have to agree to disagree then Al. I seem to remember it went in at Number 10 after the first week. Then dropped to nowhere.

All the newspapers gave it shit hot reviews and the advertising was good overall. Plus it won loadsa awards...... I think more people would have made the effort to see it had it been available to them.

It's been well chewed on here in the pubs in the provinces.Everyone seems at least aware of the film,via word of mouth...Suprising how many JD fans there are nowadays,among da yoof.. We'll never know if it would have been a roarin hit though,as practically no cunt put it on.See how the dvd sales go as a possible indicator :shrug:

Watched it again last night via a dodgy download (many thanks to Nick King via pm's for advice on how to get the fcuker to play though!! all that winrar , xtracting palaver!!)

Enjoyed it more than first watch at the cinema .Still not 100% impressed but i won't go over my previously posted thoughts on it again.

As regards distribution fair point about it not being shown in the sticks but to have only one cinema showing it in the whole of a city the population of one million (Birmingham , alright yer could argue that Brummies aren't the most cultural of peeps :evil4: but even so!!) is going a bit far!!

Looking forward more to seeing the doc.

Think it was Boaty wondering when the Control DVD is out, amazon lists it as Feb 18th but sure i read somewhere it's been put back to the summer:scratch:

Just a quick note...

People have been saying about it being in Black & White because of the cost - maybe as a joke, but if a film is shot on B/W stock nowadays, it's more expensive to process.

Shoot it entirely in digital and that's a different matter...

That would have been me, but Play have now changed their release date from June to February 11th... :)

To be honoust, I'm a bit surprised to read in several threads how much effort it took some people to see the film in the UK.

Just to give you an idea: Control was released in Belgium on 12 september and is still running in some cinemas. Went to see it in Gent three weeks ago on an average Tuesday night and was lucky to get in because it was almost sold out. It isn't one of those big commercial cinema's but still, Control's been shown there for more than 70 days on end now. Gent has 230,000 inhabitants, so not exactly a big city, imho...

It was shot in color, then they removed the color to make it black and white.

So the movie does exist in color.

Apparently Mr Corbjin didn't like the effect when shot in B&W but did when he removed the color from the color film.

Exactly. Wider audiences will go see "art films" (though Control is really little more stereotypically artsy, if better made, than your standard-issue biopic) if there is sufficient buzz, etc. etc. If British film culture wasn't so weak, it would have stronger quotas (as it once did) requiring the exhibition of home-grown product instead of letting Hollywood imports glut the multiplexes. Treating urban areas as the only places that deserve to have "legitimate" film culture is bourgeois chauvinism at its best. That said, contemporary British cinema seems little more than chamber dramas, crime films, and heritage pictures...but blame the collapsed British film industry for that. If you people want stronger British cinema, support more British films.

It's playing at the ARC in Stockton from the 4th til the 8th of December....that just down the road for you isn't it?

I'm happy because it's actually across the road for me!

I could have gone across the border to see it, Gent's only half an hour away but I couldn't be bothered to be honest. Won't be bothering with any downloads either. I'll just wait for the dvd, that'll be soon enough.

Just seen it for the 1st time today as well.

Sam Riley looks more like Steve than Ian, but Al J looks quite fetching in his mini toupe.

The end was superb- had me blubbing. The film gave a sharp insight as to why Ian killed himself, it genuinely portrayed how someone's life can be turned into chaos and the emotions were from the heart.

FUCKING AWESOME FILM!
