Are you a DJ? And did you register here just to bring that up?

Sorry dude, but have been misinformed.

First of all, definition: a disc jockey or DJ is a person who selects and plays prerecorded music for an audience. (source: wikipedia)

Second, New Order are pioneers in 12" remixes. All of them knows how to mix, and did remix a few of their own tracks.

Then, it is not that often nowadays that DJs do spins, scratches, etc. CDs are now part of the DJs record collection, aside from vinyls. I don't think you go to club scenes nowadays.

I don't think he considers himself as a DJ... he's doing it to meet New Order fans and for the fun of it.

Excellent point!

Organizers hire/pay Hooky because fans will pay to see him in person and on stage...

Are you Bernard Sumner in disguise? :ignore:

And your name could be misinterpreted as Hooky is not a DJ Asshole

meaning

Hooky is a great DJ

I have seen Hooky DJ loads of times and he has never failed to entertain me or keep me dancing. I am a clubber and while I realise he isn't in the upper echelons of celebrity DJ's skillwise - he still knows how to do it and improves every time.

How many times am I going to get house music/new order/joy division in one set.

The girl from Del Monte - she say Hooky IS a DJ - keep on keeping on Hooky! :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Just to ram my point home to this idiot...from his other thread

Peter Hook is a MUSICIAN.

He is a MUSICIAN in one of the most important bands ever, and band that defined and influenced forever the direction of dance music.

I am so sick of the way people idolise fucking DJs. DJ's are not musicians, they are not arrangers, they are not producers.

DJ's are people who mix OTHER PEOPLES MUSICAL COMPOSITIONS.

DJ'S DO NOT WRITE, RECORD, OR PERFORM MUSIC.

DJ'S PLAY OTHER PEOPLE'S MUSIC.

AND....ITS NOT THAT HARD TO DO.

I am a musician. I am a DJ. Guess which one takes more ability to do? Writing fucking songs, not spinning records in a club.

DJ-ing is a fucking cakewalk. Its a joke. You are playing records and twisting a few knobs to mix and beatmatch a few songs together. Yes you have to have a good sense of flow, or rhythm, and of reading the crowd....and some DJs can do a lot of awesome cutting and scratching and I respect that.

A good DJ is awesome, a good DJ is fun to dance to.

But even a good DJ is not a musician, or a songwriter.

I'd love to get a DJ to sit down at a piano, write a song, and then use synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines to turn that piano based song into a beautiful and moving dance track ala Blue Monday, True Faith, or The Perfect Kiss.

Could most DJ's do that?

Fuck no. They would not even know where to start. They can't compose music.

Peter Hook does DJ. Is he a good DJ...maybe or maybe not.

But Peter Hook is one hell of a musician. The lead basslines that he writes and plays in New Order songs beat out any fucking Disc Jockey any day of the week.

So, go fuck off mate.

Why pay to see someone play cd's? do it yourself at home it's easy :)

I voted NO and that's how I like him to be. Who wants a freaking DJ? Without people like Hooky who actually writes the music, DJs would have nothing to mix.

Damn right. :)

Musicians over DJs every day.

Hey Mr. Sasshole, there is no lipsync in being a DJ.

And a lot of DJs now use pre-recorded CDs as part of their mix and playlist.

That's a bit naive, shirley? Most of the big name deejays make music too. Ever heard of Sasha?

Making music digitally is still making music. Doesn't make music any more real just cos it's been made via an actual instrument, like a bass, rather than simply through a computer.

Are you still in school? If so, I'd suggest you attend more English classes now...

:abovelol: I don't think Hooky ever thinks of himself as a full-time DJ. It's just part of what he does in life right now, musically speaking. Besides, he will always be remembered for his basslines more than his DJ gigs, so what are you (the original poster) worrying about?

I don't care if the former members of NO do DJing, remixing, or whatever. In the end, we have the right to choose what to like and what not to like, and what to listen to. So, if you don't like Hooky doing DJ work, I'm sorry, but too bad.

Hooky should take over from Keith Chegwin on GMTV.

He gets people going like only Cheggars can.

does Hooky do DJ classes?

i could do with a Hobby. maybe attend night school once a week.

He could show me the ropes. "This is the CD drawer Kershie. Press play here Scouse. Stop at the end of the song mate. Skip a few if you like son. Have we got any requests tonight? Where's them post it notes?

Ah further proof that... There should be a minimum penis size imposed on all males wishing to use the net, about 1cm should keep this sort out. And of what happens when siblings fuck.

PS: most DJ's "make" music by telling someone with an actual clue, which bits of other people's records to nail together to pass off as their own. I know, I was that gimp

Hey mate, this is the kind of thing that would get the great man's attention, he'd laugh it off in his blog, do me a favour, post your bitchin post again and sneak in a request to get some live dates sorted for Freebass will yer?

Well I agree with you, but that doesn't mean that I consider the actual act of DJ-ing in a club to be equal to that of a musician playing. Even Gillian twiddling knobs on a sequencer at a live show takes more work and creatitvity than pressing play on a CD, turntable, or laptop.

Sasha is pretty good. I wouldnt pay to see him live though.

I didn't notice the location change though. Well, anyway, the original poster must be either a troll masquerading as a NO/JD fan, or a NO/JD fan who happens to be a troll, or a strange immature kid who doesn't know how to behave online. Or the combination of the three.

I couldn't give a shiny shite as long as he plays records that I like.

You know, this is what I despise about dance music... the artists that spent time creating the track get no credit, the DJ seems to get all of the credit for simply playing it and managing to mix the beat of the track into the next track. Ridiculous.

Let's put it this way, I'd rather watch dance bands like Underworld, Orbital etc play live keyboards, and occasionally, guitars, than watch some bloke with headphones on stood behind a mixing desk.

I wonder does our original poster realise that all the DJ-god-mixtapes he owns were done on protools by an engineer.....scratchy vynil through cheap preamps is great in a club, but tends to stick out like elephantitis of the penis on CD.

Dipshit.

Dipshit.

I'd guess that's true in about 1% of all commercial releases and 0% of all unlicensed, recorded completely live out-the-booth CD's which are the very definition of a "mix-tape". Any DJ's using Protools, Abelton etc acknowledge this and don't ever claim that it was done using two decks and a mixer.

And talking about vinyl in this era is a bit of a red-herring anyway. Even Grandmaster Flash uses Traktor Scratch nowadays!

http://appleproaudio.com/Article1066.html

I don't reckon any of yer A-List, global DJs have used vinyl for over three years now. In fact Hooky is probably the only jock I've seen in the last few years who hasn't gone digital (he still uses CD's).

Didn't mean to come across like I condemn it, I was just trying to irritate the OP with some reality re: being/not being a DJ.

Don't think it matters if you admit to using ableton, I find it's time stretcher, while excellent, has a unique sound that stands out.

Never managed to mix entire tracks with it, I'm just shit.

Move over Ashlee Simpson. I hope family guy do a parody of this too ;)I'm sure he had a bottle of amylnitrate close at hand. Sadly, not for recreational purposes.

This isn't some 20-year-old punk kid - this guy went to Danceteria in the 80's, Paradise Garage, he owned the freaking Hacienda - he was *there*, and he knows what real DJ'ing is, so there's no excuse, really.
