What was the most "unfavorable" comment you've received liking New Order and how did you react to it?

What was the most unfavorable comment/opinion you've received being a New Order fanatic? How did you react to it?

Mine is not really that unfavorable, but then, this it how it goes:

It happened a few months ago when my new officemate, who is fresh from college and is into modern alternative / alternative rock, heard me playing a "different" version of Selfish by The Other Two in my laptop PC. He told me it is one of her girlfriend's favorite track, and wanted a copy of it. He was "surprised" that I have 8 versions of the song. I told him that New Order is my favorite artist.

Then wanted to see my mp3 files, and was more surprised to see 20+ versions of BLT, 30+ versions of BM, and 40+ versions of Crystal (not including tributes / covers). Then I showed him my tribute / cover folders and showed him that I have more than 70 artist who covered LWTUA. Then I know he was slowly puzzled by my collection.

He then ask me if I collect all versions and covers of New Order songs. Of course, I said yes to all I can get, but not all live audio (just selected) stuff, for it will just occupy all of my HD space. I saw him have a puzzled look on his face. I know he's about to ask 'why,' but before he does, I then answered him, "It is the ESSENCE for loving New Order." I continued by telling him my collection is nothing compared to... some of you guys. Told him some even are willing to pay a big amount for some stuff that they don't own, and thier collection cost a fortune...

So I gave him a short history of the band... That they are the pioneers of 12" Versions and Remixes... And most DJs are influenced by them, and love to remix their songs, that is why they have so many versions...

So he just said "Ahhh... okay..." At least he knew the reason and didn't find me "weird."

'She wants to get out of the 80's' (??????), a friend commented to my other friend about me after she said I'd gone home to watch a Factory documentary.

I couldn't care less what other people think about my taste in music, so I didn't have to 'deal' with it.

I'm Chinese myself.. and this story reminds me of the time I was on 'da Bus last year in Oahu while on vacation... an older lady asked me about "New Order" because I had my "Get Ready" t-shirt on. She looked puzzled, thinking it strange that I was wearing a pro-Nazi shirt. I explained to her that this New Order was a band. To which she said, "ahhh.. a band... my oldest son likes rock music.." etc. Made for a good convo. starter to an otherwise eventless bus ride.

My most "unfavorable" type comment about liking New Order is "don't they just play dance music?" (while discussing about rock music in general with a friend)

About the same time bands like Pet Shop Boys and Duran Duran were big in America as some idiots associated new wave bands as being gay-driven. Although a few turned to be such as Neil Tennant and Pete Burns.

I was wearing a Ceremony t-shirt at a local beer bust and the drummer of a crap indie rock band rolled his eyes and said "Get over it!"

That the lead singer can't sing. I just shrugged it off.

Years ago I used to get the standard "Nazi sympathisers" etc line from those who knew sod all about the band and had swallowed the media's "let's-try-and-convince-the-gullible-public-the-band-are-Hitler-worshipers" bollocks. The reality that the Order frequently did 'left wing' benefit gigs (miners, Glasto etc) during the 80s seemed to be ignored. Let's just say that the band's rep was stoutly defended by me! Fortunately I think you can say that the band's achievements mean that most people give you respect for following a truly awesome band who, to quote a lyric, knew that "their worst is better than than (almost anyone else's) best".

The best tack I've found is to hold their gaze and say something like "The Order are my religious faith actually".

Ps the "Barney can't sing/play" thing: I'd always ask them about their fave vocalists....and then say that the occasional chaos at Order gigs was truly the essence of punk rock and therefore, closer to a visceral dynamic than could ever be attempted through technique alone. People diss Ralf Hutter for a similar reason but he has a unique vocal style too.

I suppose the fact that I had conversations like that with my pet guinea pig is a more underlying problem but still...the curtains.

The more amusing thing is that several of my younger friends were astounded to hear that what they were listening to in my car was more than 20 years old. I guess that was a backhanded compliment of sorts.
