Whilst listening to Anthea and Donna's - 'Uptown Top Ranking' that Rocket Mick sent me you can hear several girly Whoops. This was written in 77 said Mick an authority on Anthea and Donna.

So I reckon this was the start.

Anyone beg to differ?

Complete silly thing about the studio video related to World of Warcraft....the poster in the background has the numbers "275-285" on it, and for the cooking profession in WoW the developer made it a damn bitch to get from 275-285 skill level; it's quite the heated topic

Had to be the pernod for the whooping, if the dances are just as ridiculous.

I think snowballs as well myself.

It must have been pretty cold in them early days of Hannett's frosty production.

For instance, yes, "Everything's Gone Green" may well be the first New Order song ever to feature the Barney "whoop", but then somebody said that they were having a snowball fight during the recording of their next single "Temptation" and it is claimed you can hear them shouting at each other as the intro fades in - is this true or is this purely apocryphal?

Anyway, now I've started musing on what exactly may have inspired Barney to whoop all over his songs, assuming that the snowball theory may actually turn out to be a load of old fishbones that the cat regurgitated.

And it goes something like this:

  1. Perhaps Barney felt too self conscious about coming across all dour and serious so wanted to step out of Ian Curtis's shadow for once?

  2. Perhaps it wasn't even Barney whooping at all but Hooky or even Stephen (gurning as he usually does behind the drum kit whenever he plays).

  3. Perhaps Martin Hannett expressly forbid any of the band to appear as if they were having a good time during the recording of "EGG" at which point Barney, ever the contrary sod that he is, decided to sabotage this by deliberately whooping near the end?

  4. Perhaps Barney had swallowed something a little sharp (his plectrum?) and let out a shriek which came across sounding rather like a hoot of elation?

  5. Perhaps Barney experienced at that precise moment in time a condition now recognised as "reverse puberty" whereby his bollocks suddenly and without warning shifted back upwards in his scrotal sac, causing the hapless songster to cry out uneasily - hence the whoop of pain?

  6. Perhaps Martin Hannett crept behind him and pinched his bottom or something equally unsavoury (which shall remain the subject of conjecture)?

  7. Perhaps Barney caught Rob Gretton nicking his drink which he had his eye on all throughout the taut 26 hour recording session and tried to ward him off by emitting such a strange unearthly noise?

  8. Perhaps Barney thought that by whooping at that point in the recording, the tape op might stop the proceedings and storm off out of the studio in a huff, thus allowing the band a bit of a break in their schedule cos they were (a) dying for a fag and (b) dying for a crap?

  9. Perhaps the whoop at the end of "EGG" was a deliberately childish and infantile gesture serving as a timely precursor to the cleverly-disguised nod to the sound of Bill and Ben The Flowerpot Men sharing a bath that happens right at the end when the sequencer starts to go "Flobbalobbalobbalobbalobbalobbalobbalobbalobba" before the track abruptly ends amid much reverb.

  10. Perhaps I need to get a life and stop being so fucking anal instead?

 :spit:  :shades:
