What is the general consensus here for the song 1963? Are the remixes typically preferred over the original Substance version, or vice versa?

I personally adore the version from Substance the most. Is this version of the track available in a higher quality / remastered format anywhere? The volume of the Substance version is so low!

Me too, I like the arthur baker version the best.

It's more upbeat and brings it to life although the original wasn't bad but pales in comparison to the baker mix.

I've always found I like the Substance version best, but that's probably because it's the one I'm most familiar with... Probably the one NO track that's grown on me most since I first heard it...

I don't think the Arthur Baker remix/version of 1963 isn't the worst variant or version of a song that New Order have released, but I prefer the Substance version much better. :read:

Likewise, and in answer to your question, don't think that version's been remastered?

As for the volume being too low, I just turn the volume on my stereo up! :p

I preferred Re: Order's version. At least you knew there was some bass on it!

I never cared for that song--though I'll admit I've never heard anything but the Substance version. It's too cheesy & narrative or something (kinda like Love Vigilantes).

I first heard it when I got the promo 7" single of True Faith. I preferred 1963 to True Faith as well. Played it in the shop a few times and quite a few people asked for copies. Loads of pre-orders over those two weeks :D

I think I like the version on 'best of' mainly because it's clearer than the substance version. Funny thing is I didn't realize it was on the second substance tape until way later... I listened to the second tape once and pigeon-holed it for crap when I was 12... it wasn't for another 10 years before I actually popped it back in a tape player (mainly because the first tape crapped out on me and I wanted to here some substance badly).. and to my fine surprise I heard 1963 on it.... and immediately wondered..."what the hell is he singing about?":D

Totally agree - think it's one of NO's weaker moments

Was good hearing it live for the first time at Brum NEC and Glasgow SEC. I might have whooped even.

the best of version is clearer but it cuts out that nice final part with the high bass and so on :\ohwell:

Isn't all the songs on "singles" remastered? They seem more good sounding to me.

There's not much really difference between the different versions of the compilation albums. But i think i would prefer the Substance version a little better than the rest.

Indeed!

The version on "Singles" is slightly different to the one on Substance, and Bernard says the word "1963" a little differently. Of all the versions I've listened to, the one on Substance holds a certain atmosphere that the rest don't. Something more desperate, more sincere...

The video edit and the video itself are complete crap in my opinion.

Great tune with awful lyrics. It always sounds to me like they were added some time later, like an afterthough. By someone who was drunk. Someone who had nothing at all to do with writing the tune.

I chanced upon that Barney Prozac documentary last night and the bit where BS sits himself down with a pen, a blank sheet of paper and a completed track made me think of 1963. Johnny Marr summed it up when he asks whether he's 'finished his lines'. What a massive barrier that blank sheet of paper must be to the creative process. No wonder he struggled and no wonder he sometimes came out with a load of nonsense like 1963.

I love the video though; it makes me think of the Abba song Babooshka. Which is nice.
