galaxy today were reporting some sort of meeting at aflecks palace in manchester tomorrow, to save it from developers i think. Mentioned 'new order' would be there. Anyone else know anything ???

Petition to who, exactly? The owners of the building? I doubt the signatures of some students and a couple of pop stars is gonna make much difference against the huge offers they'll be getting for the building.

When I was a kid, Afflecks Palace was a great place to shop and hang out. It was located in a totally run down area and the small profits from the stalls in there were probably the best profit that could be made from that area. Now it finds itself located in the self-proclaimed Northern Quarter. A beautiful building like that is bound to end up being converted into flats. Why resist the inevitable? The best we can hope for is that the building itself is saved and not knocked down and replaced with steel and glass monotony like a certain other round-fronted building not too far away.

Arguably, the gentrification of that area is as a result of the coolness generated by Afflecks and the like. What they should do now is move to another run-down place and start the good work again.

Some great memories of hanging out at Afflecks though.

I noticed last weekend that there's a nightclub in the basement. What goes on down there?

I last time I went in last year, and it hadn't changed from 'back in the day'. What a marvellous place it was, but time stands still for nothing, look at the Hac? There is absolutely noweher else in town like it. Before the IRA bomb the only place comparable was the Corn Exchange, but that is now the Triangle-or-whatever.

It is a sad day but I'm no hypocrite, and apart for the odd rummage I never went in.

It's days were numbered when it finally sold out of "On the eight day..." t-shirts.

That'll be NORTH club. Never been in,it's another indie-fied club. AFFLECKS is a unique place,I've spent many a few hours in there,just a shame they've decided to sack another Manchester institution for ..what...another apartment building? Ooh you can't get them for love and money in Manchester.

During Madchester times we used to go thru every week to afflecks just to sat we'd been there, buy a few clothes (gio goi) baggy jeans and buy loads of hardcore mix tapes from one of the stalls. I remember the early days,ther used to be a big poster place where you could get ALL the New Order posters,wish i'd have had the forsight and cash to get em all whilst i was there.:\ohwell:

Went and had a look last year whilst in mancland,gone a bit too skatey/studenty for me.

When i was a wee lad there seemed to be about twenty floors,think there was only 3/4 last time i had a look,if i remember rightly.

Shame to tear the old place down/let it get into the hands of developers,but alas that is the way.

hmmm, not really true. The owner is Bruntwood and Afflecks management have a lease that has recently expired. Maybe the bloke you're talking about sold it to Bruntwood back then when you heard this.

I'm guessing that Bruntwood are hiking up the overall rent to the point that the management can't make viable, probably in the hope that Affleck's management will give up on it and let Bruntwood develop it into the usual flats/shops deal for greater profit.

You're correct. Jonny, the landlord (not owner) died last year and it's his widow who's stalling the negotiations with Bruntwood.

Look what happened with the Corn Exchange, Hacienda, Boardwalk, Free Trade Hall. The Manchester Civic Society keeps letting these things go with a whimper.

who goes in Afflecks? I'd wager precisely no one from here, the only reason i used to go in was for the reasonable poster shop and the half decent record shop on the top floor. Which went about four years ago.

Nowadays, its a magnet for plastic goths dressing like twats and having stupid things in their hair. All it is is silly clothes shops, hairdressers, tattoo parlours, etc etc. Oh, and a really dodgy cafe.

The only plus thing going for it these days is the mosaic on the outside, and who gives a fuck about that?

Questions protesters should ask themselves:

1- Do you buy clothes there? 2- Do you get your hair cut there? 3- Do you get tattoos there? 4- Do you buy anything there?

If the answer to any of these questions is "yes", then ask yourself question 5:

Could you get any of the said services elsewhere?

I dont see why people are complaning about a glorified shopping mall getting shut down. They've been trying to shut down Night and Day for years and I dont seee or hear anyone complaining about that.

I used to like it 20 years ago, when Eastern Bloc was the best place to get records, but won't miss it now. Haven't been the last few times I've been to Manchester.

Actually it's a 'house' club. Years ago it used to be a good club, frequented by footballers and popstars. Not been for a few years though. South is the club that's all indie and full of stoodents.

I like Aflecks Palace, they've got some really funky shops inside where you can buy one off outfits, made by students. I think there's a bit of something inside to please most people.
