Pretty sure I have gone on about this before, but the whole thing with Let's Go pretty much encapsulates New Order!
The song was written as an instrumental in early 1985, and was intended for Low Life, but then they got cold feet about having two instrumentals on the album and stuck the TPK edit on as a late sub. Barney had tried to come up with some lyrics for it at that stage, hence the demo version that was around at the time that had the "waiting for so long" lyrics, but they weren't happy with it and decided to leave it off the album. It was a live favourite of theirs though, and it was apparently when they were doing the Salvation soundtrack (when they wrote TBTHOG) that Arthur Baker suggested they record Let's Go again for the soundtrack, which they duly did. I'm not entirely sure who was responsible for it being re-recorded with different and crap lyrics on the "nothing for me" version for that Best Of comp, possibly Arthur Baker again?
Great song though, the instrumental is my favourite NO song by some distance.

Apparently, Barney and Arthur Baker went (or met up) on holiday sometime after Republic and randomly rediscovered the Let's Go instrumental. With (the best of) compilation looming Baker suggested they breath new life into the song and finish it off for inclusion. As the band obviously weren't talking to each other at this point I would presume Bernard and AB are pretty much responsible for what you hear in terms of lyrical choice and the overall mix for the (Nothing For Me) version; it has a very mid-nineties/Raise The Pressure type production sheen.
As I'm sure most fans familiar with the Salvation! version can hear; the drums and bass are grabbed (and cleaned up) directly from that instrumental with the obvious new parts being Barney's guitar & vocal. The keyboards sound re-recorded as well or at least blended with the instrumental's.
I do remember reading an interview with Hooky around the time where he was asked "aren't New Order bringing out a [unnamed] new single?" and as this was in the middle of their five year hiatus he - jokingly or not - hinted Barney would get a "fat lip" if he tried to release a "new" New Order single without his say so. I'd put money on that "new single" being the Let's Go (Nothing For Me) promo CD released solely in the States in advance of the their differently tracklisted (the best of). To most journalists this would sound like an entirely new single as the song had previously only made it out in rough demo form or as an apparent jam at live shows.
As with Tim, I've got a special fondness for the instrumental version... the keyboard break and ensuing guitar riff are simply the dawg's bollocks 
What can I say, I love the Best of version. 
It was the first version I heard, though, which I'm sure has something to do with it. I'm generally not to fond of instrumentals anyway.
