Let's Go (Nothing For Me)

Regarding the title of this track...

On the US version of "The Best Of" it's listed as "Let's Go (Nothing For Me)".

On the "Fan" CD of "Retro" it's listed as "Let's Go".

And on the "Bonus" CD of "Retro" it's listed as "Let's G... (Instrumental)".

Are the first two meant to be labeled differently like that? Slightly different edits? Or should they both be (Nothing For Me) and Retro just omitted the part in parenthesis?

As for the instrumental, why did they omit the "o" from "Go" and label it as "Let's G... (Instrumental)" instead of "Let's Go (Instrumental)"?

Well, the original song was called "Let's Go" - originally with different lyrics and only played live.

The instrumental version then appeared on the "Salvation!" soundtrack - an edit of which appeared on Retro CD5, hence (probably!), the "Let's G" title - i.e. it's not the complete instrumental! :p

New lyrics were then made for the (the best of) New Order album (Barney working with Arthur Baker on this one?), which then added "(Nothing For Me)" - to distinguish it (possibly?) from the instrumental.

That's what I think, anyway...

Ah, that makes sense. The one on the Best Of is 4:02 in length, and the one just labeled "Let's Go" on Retro is 3:53. The lyrics appear the same to me, so I guess they just omitted the (Nothing For Me) on Retro by mistake.

Unless someone else has any other knowledge on the topic...?

This was the "waiting for so long" version and was demo'd. Better lyrics in my humble opinion.

Interestingly (well, actually not) the best of album version is 4:02 yet the 1994 version included as part of the 1963 single release was 3:54 when it should be the same track.

The "1963" b-side version and the US "? (the best of)" version are slightly different mixes. For instance the former fades out, while the latter has a cold ending and is also missing a cymbal crash mid-song.

As for "Let's G...", interesting theory! I expect the 2008 "remasters" will list the tracks "...lue Monday" and "...enses" for the same reason, unless they can actually get the mastering right.

"Arthur baker and New Order's paths crossed when they both found themselves contributing material for the soundtrack to the film SALVATION. "They had an instrumental called "Let's Go" that really knocked me out," Baker recounts, "and I suggested we go in and add a vocal track. Bernard and I wrote the lyrics and at the time we were both going through relationship break-ups, which I guess accounts for the bitter edge to the words. Bernard sang the song, but nothing really came of it."

Nothing, that is, until the summer of 1994, when work on (THE BEST OF) got underway. Arthur Baker: "I heard they were doing a compilation and I suggested they reconsider "Let's Go", always one of my favorite New Order cuts.

The original vocal track needed some work, so Bernard and I rewrote a verse as well as putting in a new guitar part and adding some sampling and reprogramming."

So, that's the story between the two versions...

The original version of Let's Go live was always an instrumental,there is a demo version knocking about from '84/'85 that has vocals I believe,tho' I've never heard it.

Touched by the hand of god was written for salvation, so around 87-88, I think (but I'm probably going to get shot down for this) that TBTHOG was played at glasto 87, so the writing of the film tracks must have been 87, but deffo a few years after confusion/TLU

I wonder what version will appear on Low Life Disc 2? The original '85 demo should be the one. Surely they ain't gonna put the '94 rework on.

If it had been reworked you wouldn't have heard it again after Low Life but it was played until 1987 so that's a no.

The song was dropped, one that didn't make it onto Low Life, shame really as Sooner than you think or This time of night could have given way in my opinion.

The song was certainly liked by Hooky who played it with Revenge. Just a bit of fret wanking on a bass though innit?

It can't really be anything else than the full Elegia, can it? I bet Let's Go is the Salvation instrumental... Now, if it was the original vocal demo after all, this package would actually be worth buying!

When and where was "Let's Go" played by Revenge, by the way? Unless you mean WDYWFM, which one could say is a descendant of Let's Go (in more than one way)...

& it's a quality bit of fret wanking too,but definately shouldn't have been included on LowLife at the expense of STYT or TTON IMO,2 of my all-time favs' & 2 of N.O.'s best.To be honest,I don't think it fits on LowLife,but that may be just because of time & what I'm used to

It sounds VERY much like STYT. "waiting for so long, oh Ive been waiting for a chance to see ya" could easily be "you know what we do is so unkind, we search for the life we need to find".

Also, NO seem to have gone back to this song in 2001 and lifted the keyboard mid solo for 60MPH.
