JOY DIVISION Documentary DVD out yesterday in UK!

Bought it yesterday!! Really good documentary,and some of the footage on it,is a great find. DVD also features an extra 40 minutes of interviews with the band and friends not included in the film! Going to watch them tonight.

Got it as part of my birthday, not had time to watch it yet though.

Just finished watching the extras. Basically interviews by the same people in the film,the band,Terry Mason,Annik,Lesley Gilbert,C P Lee,Paul Morley,Saville and the late great Tony Wilson.

Funniest got to be the first one where Barney talks about auditioning for a drummer.And one is far up his own arse,he thinks he's auditioning the band. "Fuck off you prick" And the rest? Hooky hit on the idea of buying boxes of chocs for the ones they were going to let down. "No you are really good,you're too good,we feel we'd be holding you back.."

There's actually about an hour and a half of interviews - I think they're the same as on the US DVD - I like Steve's impression of Rob Gretton.

I got my copy yesterday. Great documentary. I actually saw it in a rather large cinema a couple of months ago and I was the only one there! The bonus interviews are pretty good although I think the director's final choices for the documentary were about right. However, CP Lee's comments on the the history of the Free Trade Hall should have made the final cut; perhaps they deviated from the JD story, I don't know, but I found them interesting.

I ordered it today. I'm looking forward to get it.

That's my tomorrow night sorted then!

Actually the way the documentary is made is fantastic, with a lot of thought, bringing the tiniest tips of documentation to light and making them watchable. Great approach. 'Control' needed to have some of this approach.

I agree, though like 24 hour party people, Control was semi-fictionalized. This documentary style would've worked as well with New Order Story. Though, both of them give us the band, well being the band, I do prefer the dinner table segments from NO story though, "I'm not a bitter man".

Is there the Q&A with Stephen at the Curzon theatre in London where a bunch of Vikings were at? Surprisingly, none of us asked a question..would be funny to see the backs of their heads though

Oh and another snippet with Barney,about round the time they were up and down M62 between Manchester and West Yorkshire,Ian and Hooky were questioned to eliminate them from enquiries about the Yorkshire Ripper murders!

I though Terry Mason's contribution to the extras was quite poignant. Can you imagine what it's like to have to do a normal workaday job and get interrogated every time you mention your past? He has to deal with the consequences of having known Ian and the band without the cushion of fame.

Twas Steve and Hooky who were questioned re the Ripper murders, not Ian.

Also - I did hear that the two Q & A sessions (Morris/Savage & Saville/Gee) were both filmed but none were deemed suitable for broadcast - also there were several other proposed extras (most notably the Factory Flick) which were pulled due to disagreements over licencing.

bought it today and mussed to son of 79, this might be my last joy division purchase ,, thoughts then turned to the new order re releases,, im not going to buy them turned into ,bloody hell in a few weeks i will be back here buying the things

That'll be Cherry Red stopping it getting out yet again, and do they have any plans of their own to release it? Who knows?

I have yet to purchase the DVD but I have seen the documentary minus the bonuses...now I definitely have to buy a copy!

Watched it last night. I enjoyed it much more than Control, which was too much of a kitchen sink drama. The docu got over just how unique the music was/is.

Worth watching for Genesis P Orridge who now has lips and plastic surgery that make Pete Burns' look understated. I think he has breast now too, but wasn't showing those off. Interestingly he didn't mention how Ian used to ring him and sing the T.G. song crying down the phone, which he claims in his book. He also claims that Ian called him on the night of his death and the Gen was desperately trying to call people in Manchester to go round to his house and check that he was OK
