I really like this song a lot. especially the little jam session part towards the end. New Order sounds so full of life and content with no trace of electronics anywhere....not saying electronics are bad, but hearing New Order like this is refreshing too. I like it when they switch it up and go guitar-bass-drums as opposed to synths and sequencers sometimes. I think Weirdo could have been a hit it's really catchy and jangly and a lot better than State Of the Nation.

BLT was a big flop as a single and was the obvious choice from Brotherhood. There is nothing else on there that is remotely single material.
The main reason for having a single is either to (A) get radio airplay, or (B) get played by DJs at dance clubs. New Order has usually made most choices on what will make 12" singles for club play.
"Weirdo" would probably not be considered for either. I've always liked "Weirdo" and "Paradise", cool leftfield "pop" songs. I know in the US that the alternative/college radio scene barely even existed in 1986. The only way New Order could get play was on dance floors.
Maybe "All Day Long" would have been cheesy enough for radio play, I dunno.

I've always thought ADL was the great lost NO Christmas tune. The production values on the track are high, with a real lush Christmas feel to it. For the British market at least anyway.
As for Weirdo being a single? Sorry No Holiday, but I'm going to have to disagree with you yet again.
I think Broken Promise is the best song on the album. Really fast and energetic, would have reminded people of JD.
You know what? I reckon Weirdo possibly would have been a good single. Only if they'd left it off the album though. No fucker would have bought it, same as no fucker bought the infinitely better quality BLT that was released. State of the Nation was just an aberration, we know that, they know that (now....).
Why bother with singles anyway though?

Weirdo is a great song, but I think Paradise would have been a better choice as a single in addition to BLT. It even has that remix version which ended up as a b-side, so maybe it was being considered as a single at one point in time but never made the cut.
I think Weirdo is a cool "left field" catchy pop tune that would serve as an interesting contrast to BLT and would show the band in a different light.....I also agree Broken Promise is great and does remind me of JD or at least Early New Order, like something that would fit on Movement.
One of the things that makes New Order so intriguing is their duality....songs like Subculture co exist with Sunrise, they can do a True Faith, and also a Guilty Partner. I think back then they should have released some more singles that reflected that, just some catchy guitar pop, as opposed to a danceclub style song. Don't you think people on the radio would like Weirdo?

College radio was HUGE in the early 80s (in New England at least)... bands like REM, Husker Du, Replacements, Smiths, New Order, Cocteau Twins, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure et al would have never got anywhere in the US without massive college radio exposure in the EARLY 1980s.
By 86-87, college radio was PEAKING....

I adore Paradise, especially the In Session version.
i think they should have released paradise (all day long is beautiful but not single material). weirdo is ok, but nothing special. good album overall, though.

I thought that All Day Long was a song that hints at child abuse. Certainly not chart friendly "single" material.

I agree that ALL DAY LONG would have been a top choice.And would have got re-released when NSPCC use it on their TV campaign. Advantage New Order. KER-CHING!

Yeah Weirdo is a real energy rush. Hooky is really high in the mix - the bass sounding as good as ever. My favourite album Brotherhood, full of offbeat/avant-garde charm
