Hypothetical question

If New Order were 20 years younger and better looking would they be as big as The Killers after releasing Get ready and WFTSC?

I'm not saying their ugly...i guess older, and not so skinny anymore. Not ugly by any means.

Only kidding, all i can say on the matter is that i personally wouldn't have enjoyed or purchased Get Ready and, err.... the other one, if they hadn't been by the band who gave us 'Everything's gone green', 'Blue Monday' and 'Thieves like us' 20 years earlier. With a few exceptions, i found most of their post-reformation material rather average/ ordinary.

I think the answer to your question depends on whether the music of JD/NO would have been made at all in that case, because I agree that if it weren't for their past, NO's post-reunion output would have gone nowhere.

i'd still have bought them because if I'd never heard any of their older stuff.......these woulda been the first time I'd hear a bass played properly!!!

I don't think they'd have been as big as some of the bands out today simply because without their legacy and back catalogue of evolution, they might just sound like any other band out there.

New Order wound up right place & time in their era. If they were releasing stuff like Ceremony, Temptation and the like as a band these days - sure. I see that easily lending them the kind of following of those other bands today. But a GR/WFTSC-era New Order? I just don't see that pumping the blood.

The Killers even at their very best have NOTHING and NOTHING on New Order musically. With that I would imagine that the fact that The Killers have enjoyed more commercial success in the USA is as a result of other things like marketing and what have you.

I like The Killer's first album quite a bit. They kind of got annoying over time though. That new song "Are we human or are we dancer?" is kind of stupid. New Order's sound never went that route, in my view anyway.

It's Indie Rock and Roll to me!

How could a lot of the bands out there have sounded the way they do if it wasn't for the influence they'd had from NO, in which case NO would be fresh and new, and if they were younger and into the current scene(s) more, they would sound different than they do now, even hooky's bass, as the equipment would be different, and possibly wouldn't have forced him to play higher up the scale to be heard, and it's very doubtful he'd have got a clone theory.

I always felt that with the emergence of all the electro rock bands prior to get readys release (killers excluded obviously) it was new orders way of saying, hold on, we pioneerd this sound, and we are going to prove it with an album better than any of the bands they had influenced leading up to that point. I think they did just that, its one of, if not my fave NO album.

I'm of the belief that had it not been them that influenced a lot of the recent crop of inspired bands, it'd have been some of their peers who just as quickly started up on a similar path. If there hadn't been a NO in that point of time following JD, I'm sure that someone else would have filled that hole pretty quickly. We'd just be missing out on a lot of songs we all enjoy, is all.

It's a good thing they were where they were, when they were. It helped all the rest come along pretty smoothly.

So in your country, in order for an artist to sell CDs, they need to be young, and look like a supermodel wannabe????

Where I live, New Order are popular amongst people who listen to foreign (non-Japanese) music. And they're not that bad looking...especially if you compare what the average 50-ish men and women look like.

But most importantly, New Order (and related bands....JD, side projects etc...) are still popular and mentioned in music magazines here after all these years, because of their music!

It's just occured to me that if NO had just formed, we'd all be here discussing OMD...

Couldn't have said it better myself even now they beat Brandon and his band of hairies? I know I'm going into dangerous territory here but 20 years ago there was nobody better looking- period. It's a scientific fact, people.
