I want to be a cultural catalyst.

They should be sticking a statue up outside the town hall.

Like, whatever. What did this Wilson guy do anyway, it's like claiming Larry King discovered Nickelback or something dude.

Joy Division invented music, without them there would be no Clash*, Kraftwerk, Iggy Pop, Throbbing Gristle or Kajagoogoo.

Get things into perspective you Brits!

*Are the Clash ever gonna reform dudes, i wanna riot of my own!

p.s. re: The Clash often sang about a "Westway", this is the road that takes you to the USofA from London in England right? How do you guys make that journey in your funny little Soviet cars?

p.p.s. i guess this is what Ian was singing about in Shadowplay, from the centre of the city waiting for you, he wanted to drive to freedom in the US ok?

p.p.p.s. I guess if he'd been in a Pontiac or a Buick he'd still be alive

American cars are useless on British roads as we have these things called "corners", which American cars are not set up for, being made, as most are, by hollowing out a solid lump of iron. If american cars are so good why can an American engine of some 10 litres produce about 200 horse power, but a European engine of a mere 2.4L can kick our 800+

You'll be claiming they invented cars next.

As for what Tony did....well giving up his life savings for a start, if he'd not done that you'd never have heard of your boyfriend at all.

Fear not, oh maiden of the East. For once this isn't a cultural differences thing, even to a UK resident, he's talking indecipherable bullshit.

(Speaking of which, I notice you've "got with the program" in terms of how we all perpetually take the piss, at least I've not seen you telling anybody off for it lately ;) )

Guess Iggy & Kraftwerk got a time machine and spied on JD practicing in the warehouse in order to get their start! Well, you learn something new every day:crazy:

Well, actually Kraftwerk existed before JD, but if Manchester wants to honour Tony Wilson, then they should be able to.

And, as much as I tend to dislike a lot of the young bands that say JD was an influence on them (not because they claimed JD was their influence---I just tend to not like the younger band's music), JD has been influential in the music scene.

Kraftwerk, Iggy, The Clash and Throbbing Gristle all existed before JD. The slightly amusing inclusion of Kajagoogoo makes me suspect he's rather gently taking the piss.

Interesting for such an 'American' sounding nutter, he spells it centre and not center, the American spelling.

Maybe he was just copying it directly from the lyrics booklet or something.

I'd be suprised that he could read!

They should erect statues for Wilson for all he's done for Manchester, if Alan Turing has one and a street named after him then Wilson definitely deserves one too.

Praise on Tony where praise is due.

But ....erm....Wilson gets FREEDOM OF THE CITY? "I'm offended. He's got the key to the city. He's not been in my pub yet"

What is it with these council types? Have they ever watched LIFE OF BRIAN?

STAN "I want to have babies"

CLEESE "You can't have babies.Where's the baby going to gestate? In a box?"

STAN "Don't you oppress me"

RUTH "Can't we fight for Stan's right to have babies?"
