I don't know if this has been discussed before but...

What is your opinion on New Order tribute albums? There are about five out currently and I've read some good reviews on Amazon.com for 2 out of the 5. But here are the five:

Blue Order Tribute True Faith: A Tribute to NO A Tribute to NO Thieves Like Us: Tribute to NO (Limited Ed.) Re: Movement (Japanese Tribute)

Are any of these bearable?

"Blue Order: A Trance Tribute to New Order" is the worst record I ever bought in my life. I never was able to listen to it in its entirety. "Re: Movement" is alright but it's expensive. "A Tribute to NO" is so so. I know it's not on your list but "Essence", that Brazilian tribute, is nice. It's a shame it's hard to find even in Brazil.

They mostly suck, but IMHO, "Re: Movement" seems to be a stand out, Japanese Tribute and it's actually.. good.

Don't get me wrong, there is good cover versions on those albums, but some sounds like songs on the Rest of album.

Blue Order = bleah
True Faith = not very good, although 2-3 tracks are interesting... plus, I have my name in the booklet, which makes it an essential piece for any collectors. :D
A Tribute to New Order: Bad for most of it, although Interzone's version of True Faith was ok.
Thieves Like Us: stay away from it.
RE: Movement: The most interesting out there. Some of the versions are original and good.

But all of these are by artists from whom you will never hear again, who do this part time in their home studio. Hopefully, maybe we'll see one day a real serious tribute to New Order from established bands (think of The Cure's Love Will Tear Us Apart).

I'm not a big fan of tribute albums to say the very least cos as you could expect, there's always the chance that a good 80 percent of the tracks would be by unknown artists undertaking some kind of extreme colonic irrigation of the originals, leaving the remaining 20 percent as tracks you'd probably want to listen to maybe three times at most then quickly forget in a hurry.... Hmmmm.... :skeptic:

Mind you - I'd still like to hear what some of the Manchester folks did with that recent New Order/Joy Division tribute gig the night after the Old Trafford show... I'm intrigued by the sound of that one anyway.

Not saying this because of my bands recent recording, but alot of the time I think you'll find that unknown bands or if you want to call them unsigned bands, are much better than the well known bands or bands appearing in the charts !!

Blue Order - A Trance Tribute To New Order: Well... It's weird. I don't mind it, but it's not doing justice to New Order...

Essesnce: I'm trying to buy this from Ricardo but I keep having problems with the stupid post office. So I have no idea, although Nude, Aghast View, Biopsy and Clone DT did some fairly good versions. I really just want to hear the covers of Doubts Even Here and State Of The Nation..

New Order Thieves Like Us Tribute: I want this. Most tracks are fairly good. Like Dream Attack.

True Faith - A Tribute To New Order: I don't mind it. Good take on Every Little Counts.

A Tribute To New Order: Well, it has Razed In Black doing Everything's Gone Green. And they're fairly big. It's good if you like techno. I bought it for the cover of World (The Price Of Love).

RE:MOVEMENT: Another I have yet to hear fully, although Capsule Giants!' version of The Perfect Kiss and Sugiurumn's version of World In Motion blew me away. An English pride song sung by the Japanese... Hmm..

And that's my op. If you want the best, I'd hand that over to Essence from what I've heard from it, otherwise, Thieves Like Us.

I wouldnt mind hearing some out of sheer curiosity but i'd never part hard earned cash to hear an artist 'raping' neworders beautifully crafted music...

I have blue order (and ignoring every other post i've done with my views on re-mixes)............and i like it (but there again i've aways been a bit of a trance head)

I have had a terrible time getting into any tribs for NO, but I like "Means To An End" for Joy Division - very good, no one totally lost the original feel or meaning... I might have to investigate the Thieves one from the sounds of things.

I generally steer clear of 'tribute' albums. I have little desire to hear my fave band's or artist's songs attempted by another. There's been some good cover versions in the past, but I am just a wuss when it comes to buying an entire album of them.

A few years ago I picked up "The Eternal: Variations on Joy Division" by The Nau Ensemble Chamber Orchestra. I believe they are out of Sweden. Have any of you heard of this or actually own it?

I purchased the "The Eternal: Variations on Joy Division" a few years back on Amazon.com. I like it alot and they do nice covers of the eternal and Atmosphere.

At the Homage: a new order tribute night in manchester there were various unknown bands doing covers, most of them were a bit rubbish apart from the fantastic "Ice Cream Bandits" who did Perfect kiss. That cowbell player was a touch of class. :D

Yes he certain was a GOOD BANDIT.Covered in ICE CREAM a member of the audience ,in a CELTIC SHIRT,jumped on stage and licked him till the cows came home.:D

:nonono: All lies....espescially the bit about the cowbell player:D Haven't got any of the tribute albums, so I can't really comment......although I did play most of the stuff that was in the multimedia section of this website......there's a lot of shite in there, but there's also a few hidden gems.....YSF by Velocity Girl, LV by LSMJ and a couple of others, a best of cover versions would be a good idea (if I was the one who picked the tracks )
