Since today's topics are focusing on MP3's, Streaming Audio, Dough Based Products etc. I thought I'd throw in my 2 crisp wrappers worth of info.

Anyone heard of 'LimeWire'? ... well, for all of those that haven't, it is a search engine like Napster, however it is not restricted to audio - it finds programs, videos, images, interesting places to eat etc. - anyway, 'I've heard' that a quick search for New Order material produces a bounty of tasty morsels. Certain legal questions are asked before the program is accepted and installed, nothing too tricky, along the lines of 'Do you own this record that was never released?, 'Are you sure you want this bootleg?' and 'When did you buy this entire album in France that was only available in Japan and limited to 5 pressings?'.

apparently LIMEWIRE contains alot of spyware, you can download a "clean" version from alot of download sits though... LIMEWIRES pretty good though, and yes you can download audio, video(loads of pornos apparently) and software... i use WINMX more myself, very similar...

Just to recap, what is Spyware?

It's these Gator things they smuggle into the software, which allows advertisers access to your PC, allows them to see what files you look at, which websites you access etc. If you use a firewall like Zone Alarm (freeware), you have the choice to block them, but they can get very nasty. You'll soon see your Yahoo and Hotmail accounts become full of porn links, loan application shite and all sorts.

Spyware can be 'un-cloaked' by this good freeware call ADWARE. You can download this from....err...(someone please help me with this one)...

anyway...i've used it and installed it on my box....highly recommended...

Cheers! ... we recently had some fire cracker software bunged in our machines to create some shield of sorts to stop the robbers getting in. I think it was called 'Jeff's Fire Barrier' or something, maybe 'Norton's Crack House'. I was hoping, or we were told, this stops the majority of intruders but I suspected it was a fairly tame piece of kit that would require replacing after 1 nanosecond as the Star Trek hackers invented a piece of code to combat the Crack House.

If one of these search engines is used and a supposed piece of protection software is active what gives then? ... I must confess we rarely use anything that leaves tracks simply because we cannot afford to mop up the leftover hogwash. I fear most of this internet malarky, which is why I wouldn't ever publish my full name Peter Huntsmaker.

zdnet.com has ad aware, go to downloads and then put in the search space "ad aware"

I have Zonealarm (free firewall), Adaware (free spyware remover) and antivirus software. In my experience these three things keep my PC pretty clean (that and not opening any *.exe or *.scr files that I receive in my email (even from people I know). The Internet is a wonderful thing :)

right now I'm using winmx, and I find a good choise of music, but it is very slow to download, I mean really slow. so I think I want to try Limewire, can anybody give me a link to a non-spyware version I can download.

LimeWire isn't too bad, but I find that it is hard to find a lot of obscure bands on it, which can sometimes be frustrating.:\ohwell: Too bad AudioGalaxy is no longer accessible for downloading music. I ALWAYS found what I was looking for on it.
