Well then i guess i will have to start. Favouite format is 12 inch.
My favouite mix is the FIRE ISLAND MIX of REGRET. The favourite ARTWORK are the combined PERFECT KISS on the 7 inch on FACTORY BENELUX by which you need 2 copies with the picture sleeves so when JOINED together this spells out THE PERFECT KISS NEW ORDER.Excellent photos like the ones in LOW LIFE with all four members of the group.Absolute classic. Promo wise is TRUE FAITH with the BLUE CABBAGE picture on CD. Always had great days out in MANCHESTER at THE RECORD PEDDLER trying to increase the collection.Mark used to have a display cabinet with promos like the FLICKER BOOK,12 inches of NEW ORDER RULER and a plaster cast of the original FAC 51 SIGN,can you believe it! Best format is 12"

Favourite item is my Canadian BLT 7" with gatefold sleeve. Unique mix too, haven't played it for ages but I remember it's a good compromise between the Brotherhood and Pettibone mixes.

Best artwork belongs to a JD release IMO...the hessian Still.

Promo - probably go with you on the True Faith one, even though mine sounds apalling when you play it.

As for supply, imports mainly came from Adrians and Key Mail Order, record fairs were and are good for the occasional gem and I also had a mate who ran a record shop for a while who knew a very generous rep...

OLD BLUE cheers for responding,The two places you mention,ADRIANS and KEY MAIL ORDER where some of the cheapest around in about 1992.I actually got the CANADIAN BLT one you mentioned from one of these for aprox £3 at the time and was amazed HOW good it was with the BLACK and WHITE photo of the group inside.Everyone needs a good supplier...just ask BEZ.The HESSIAN one i picked up 2 years ago for £20 but it does not really DO it for me.I like pictures and FINE ARTWORK in the way TRUE FAITH ...THE REMIXES is done or the inside of the PROMO of SUBSTANCE with the VERY LARGE COLOURED LEAVES. re: format - it has to be the 12" x 12" cinemascope technicolour 12" singles & the albums.... on the album front the Hessian Still for design, the Double Gatefold NO Substance vinyl (with the fine touch 'not for resale unless desperate...') and of course the rather special greaseproof low-life...

for mixes, I too love the Regret mixes - both the Sabres slo'n'lo and the Fire Island mix are sheer class....

For cover/s, I think I'd go for the original Temptation 7 & 12 as a nice twin set.....

Get one,they are no good in the LOFT and will not last long! Don't use LOWLIFE for cooking and start getting those PROMOS cos you'll love it when you here it before it gets on the NET!SPOOKY is a great choice as i had put some of these on SPOOKY WORLD recently.Trouble is i gave them ALL away including my MASTER COPY.Dumb but then when i reverted back to WINDOWS 98 from XP i lost ALL my saved music files so back to the STUDIO at PLANET ROCKET.:D

Aside from the original mixes which I believe are always the best, The Fire Island mix of Regret, The Paradise Re-mix and Run 2 are my personal favourite other versions.

The promo.

The initial Get Ready promos, because of NO's 8 year absence, were as exciting as a promo could get, for the simple reason they sounded better than anything off Republic which gave new hope to the bands future, and to my personal listening habits. A promo that my favourite band were about to embark on another important and influencial chapter of music making.

After hearing them for the first time with 'Sub-Culture' 12" which I must have played infinitimm (someone lent me the record to try at school and I was pretty much astounded at the originality) I ventured into town to find more from them. Ceremony 12" was the first NO record I found and bought, without even knowing what it was! I found a NO space in HMV records and (very hard to locate 'anything' by NO in the eighties in any shop!) flicked through a couple of records finally deciding on Ceremony because of the glorious artwork. The green 'veritas' 12" cover with gold lettering and curiosity value exceeding that of any other piece of recorded material I have ever come across in my life, it was a pivotal moment in my music listening life and maybe also a shock that a record cover could be something much more. For about 3 years, I did not realise the 12" wasn't a long song entitiled 'Ceremony in A Lonely Place'. How silly that sounds now, but at the time how was anyone who didn't know about the band or who couldn't get access to info. about the band know any different? ... looking at the 12" it specifically says 'Ceremony in A Lonely Place'. Quality.

I am possibly too decrepid a fan to appreciate what the kids think today about burning CD's of music they have found. I can say that of all the CD releases, which are digital versions of the vinyl like MP3's etc. I enjoy Technique because of its synth based, digital sounds, which sounds incredibly precise and clean on a CD player - which could be the initial intended medium of the final recording as opposed to vinyl.

I have a letter from Factory Records from about 1985 (on beautiful opaque paper) which I treasure, also a gold factory badge.

purchase anecdotes... local Woolies was the only store I could pick up a copy of Blue Monday when it came out in '83.... in fact Woolies had an interesting vinyl section in the early - mid 80s - I seem to recall picking up early Jesus & Mary Chain 7"s for 50p a pop - and it was the only place I could get the NO substance double cassette in the ltd box....

...elsewise purchasing was, like the live NO experience a tad hit and miss... remember the Touched adverts in the weekly music press?? - 'All advertising paid for by Pinnacle - some of us have to make a living...' was a rather wonderful moment in the myth-building....

I have a flyer for the Hac opening in yellow, silver & blue which is a rather nice artefact...

... and someone who's become a good friend of mine over the last five or so years, it transpired one night in coversation used to bootleg gigs in the early eighties with another guy, and used to distribute said bootlegs in & around the South East... got to talking about some of the experiences and it turns out they used to be in touch with Robert Gretton who would help them out when they turned up at NO gigs...

The original Blue's, Beano's and Barndances Boy's Own cover in pink for the promo of Fire Island's Fire island, Unfortunately I passed up the chance to buy it and only have the full release Junior Boys Own sleave. So it remains the one that got away.(incidentally a lad I know looks exactly like the picture on the Boy's Own logo.)

OK Mick the Wet Rocket, you asked for it..

Format: Has to be the 12". I still amass a lot of vinyl, but not exclusively. The 12" format has historical significance for New Order because they were part of the vanguard who were first able to fill it with extended tunes and remixes. Also because it's the best canvas for Saville's visual wizardry; CDs, cassettes, 7"s just don't afford the space.

Edit / Mix: Tough, there's so many. I thought Robert Racic did a good job on Paradise (their only Aussie remixer..?), but it's tough to isolate one. In the GR-era, I thought the Lee Coombs "Crystal" was quite a little bottler.

Promo: I've got a few sleek promos with original artwork which is always a bonus, like the die-cut 1963 and True Faith-94, the US Oakenfold World and the like. I guess it's the German Confusion 7" because of the tasty looking clear coloured plastic. Good enough to eat.

Cover: As mentioned above the Gatefold Substance is full of Factory joy, and the metallic Brotherhood is a gem. I just aquired it off a "talented little gnome ".

Download: I have a weird old skool dislike of downloading stuff from bands like NO. I want to own the originals of every damn thing so it's a tangible part of my collection, not some file on my PC. Also I don't mind them getting a cut of my hard-earned. Plus, when you've got a smokin' hi-fi set up at home, mp3s don't cut it in the sound stakes. I did download the vocal version of Skullcrusher though, just to see what the hell it sounded like.

Memorabilia: Similar to what the Hustler said above, I have a letter from Factory on the official paper (FAC something-er-rather). Being a serious young lad in 1988 in Australia, so removed from the band I took it upon myself to write to Factory for band info. I received a candid reply from A. Wilson himself so that's a nice momento. Also, my girlfriend heard of an old bottle of red wine with the lyrics to Temptation printed on the back, so she hunted for years for it (she's in the industry). And she found it, so that's an oddity with real personal significance.

I also met one of my best mates through the Ceremony site, does that count? He's an oddity, but hardly collectible.

Bottle of wine story is suberb and i had also not realised about the AUSSIE remix of which i OWN.So thanks there too.A good candidate for a CD but what if some ARE downloaded(by OTHERS) MP3's.I suppose it would have to be ALL BONA-FIDE illegal copy of a NEWISH concert for you?We will see! Multi coloured Power, Corruption & Lies. Not really artwork but the most beautiful New order item i've ever had. The best artwork for me is the Republic and associated singles stuff. I used to sit and examine those covers for hours at a time. Beautiful!!

The Streetwise Confusion promo was the first mix of Confusion to hit the streets as I understand it. I'd been looking for this item for yonkers when one Saturday afternoon i was in a second hand store in Glasgow when this guy comes in selling a pile of New Order stuff including said promo and a few other gems including compilations with Evil Dust and the Sunrise instumental. The geezer in the shop offered him something like £4 for the lot, I butted in and offered him a fiver which the guy duly accepted about two seconds before we were ejected from the shop!

The multi coloured PCL was bought for about £5 when it was released in a small independent record shop in the then fairly new Rutherglen Shopping Arcade. I'd just got a new pup the day before, a wee hairy Jack Russell who i'd named Barney who was so small he sat snugly in my pocket. Barney died last year and is now buried with the multi coloured PCL at the bottom of my garden. I loved that dog to death and even now i have tears running down my ugly mug as i type this!

As someone who had it all, the first time i had cause to download anything was the Get Ready stuff way back early last summer which was a thrill to say the least when it turned out to be far better than I was expecting.

A common misconception about mp3s is that the quality is'nt that good. Mp3 is actually a more efficient way of encoding music than the ATRAC system employed by minidisc and many cd rippers allow you to choose different coding levels to suit yourself. Anything encoded at 192kps or above will give quality that most people wont be able to tell apart from cd, that is a proven fact!

As for the mp3s I find it's noticeable on a decent system but agree that on lower-end stuff it's negligible.

Despite technical jargon a man without the capacity to hear anything above the frequency 1khz (roughly the sound of an earthworm chewing baccy) could tell, at a distance of 400ft, the outrageous difference between a commercial CD and an MP3. Most people record MP3's on default setting which is mediocre, then the recording is copied and multiplied in the same way animals replicated within the ark before it capsized off cape horn.

Records = the full spectrum of sound CD's = not quite the full spectrum Minidisks = a bit like CD's Old Minidisks = a bit worse because they had in-built compression MP3's = dollops

I'd be happy to translate that so everyone can understand if the more technical and complicated analogies are a bit much.

Bloody Hell. Muffy what a FANTASTIC story about PCL.It used to be worth about £120 ages back.But as a dog lover myself your story is truly FANTASTIC.Just think when the latest BALDRICK/SENSIBLE TV presenter doing a TIMETEAM SPECIAL in a couple thousand years.The LP having miraculously survived after being bathed in your COOL persona is found,thus when your dogs bones are then found people then conclude in the late 20Th and early 21 st CENTURY we worshipped DOGS.
