Freebass — the three-bass supergroup that consists of former New Order member Peter Hook, ex-Smiths bassist Andy Rourke and Primal Scream bassist Mani — have finished their debut album, which is now being mixed.

Hook made a MySpace blog entry on July 21 in which he wrote about the album. He will sing two songs on the album, while Haven's Gary Briggs will handle most of the other vocals. The as-yet-untitled album also features guest appearances from Charlatans UK singer Tim Burgess, Wah! frontman Pete Wylie and writer Howard Marks. The disc doesn't have a release date yet.

You can hear "The Tower," which is an older Freebass song, and "Sugar Daddy," a "rejected demo" of an instrumental track, on the band's MySpace page. Neither of the songs are on the album.

Interestingly enough, Bad Lieutenant, New Order singer/guitarist Bernard Sumner's new side project, just announced they'll release an album this year. Justin Richards, who engineered the Bad Lieutenant album, also worked on the Freebass record. Funny, that.

We’ll admit that we were kind of thinking (and hoping) that this was a big ol’ practical joke, but no, it turns out that the bass-loving supergroup known as Freebass is not only 100% authentic, but they’ve also finished writing their first album.

Made up of British bass-slinging royalty like Mani from The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, The Smiths’ Andy Rourke and the phantom DJ himself, Peter Hook- of Joy Division and New Order fame -, Freebass have been hard at work on their debut LP, or at least that’s what we think Hooky’s typically rambling blog entries were saying.

“At last the writing has been finished and apart from a few ‘B’ side things to finish the point has come to finish the project,” Hook wrote. “We began mixing on Monday the 21st of July at 10AM.”

The blog entries even revealed an early tracklisting for the forthcoming LP, including song-titles such as Bury Me Standing, Secrets And Lies and The God Machine, all of which sound like typical Hooky eccentricity. Bless ‘im.

Never one to bury the hatchet, Hooky inserted a few thinly veiled attacks at Bad Lieutenant, the other project to arise from the ashes of New Order, this time helmed by Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris.

Speaking about Freebass’ choice of engineer, Hooky revealed that Justin Richards “has just been working on the Bad Lieutenant session how weird is that! He has recovered now tho…......”

Hook also explained that Freebass would hit the road sometime in October to drum up some buzz for the supergroup’s impending album, which is also the same time that Bad Lieutenant’s debut record will hit shelves. Coincidence? With Hooky, that’s never the case.

Reservations aside about what such a bass-heavy project like Freebass might eventually sound like, we’re honestly excited to hear the finished product. Peter Hook basslines are essentially timeless, and Mani and Andy Rourke are no slouches either. We’ll be following the supergroup’s movements from now on so stay tuned for more developments!

Very surprised about the Pete Wylie vocals but have always thought he was criminally underrated so I'm very interested to hear what that one sounds like.

Peter Hook Gets Set to 'Freebass'

Former New Order and Joy Division bass player Peter Hook is hoping to unveil his latest band, Freebass, later this year. "You're gonna hear it in September, October," he tells Spinner of his bassist supergroup, which finds him teaming with Andy Rourke of the the Smiths, Gary "Mani" Mounfield of Primal Scream and vocalist Gary Briggs from Haven.

The ensemble was originally intended to include several guest vocalists, including Billy Corgan, who toured with Hook's New Order a few years ago, but a few others delivered in his place. "We started asking friends and it was wonderful. A lot of people offered, but offering and then doing are entirely different things," Hook says. "Tim Burgess [of the Charlatans] has done a song for us, which is absolutely fantastic; Pete Wylie, from Wah has done a thing for us that is wonderful; Howard Marks has done a rap on one song, which is great, absolutely fantastic."

But it was Briggs who really stepped up. "We came across Gary and he loved the music and sort of seized the opportunity with both hands," he says. "And basically everybody else fell away and Gary's done a fantastic job lyrically and vocally. I'm very happy with it."

Last we spoke with Hook, he was in Chicago for a DJ gig and he tells us though he has a new band on the way he's not ready to give up his DJ career. "I love DJing and I really do find it quite liberating working alone after 30 years of traveling with upwards of 15 to 25 people and having to do everything by committee," he says. "Doing something on your own is wonderful, so I don't see that I'm gonna be exclusively Freebass. I'm not gonna do that because I enjoy DJing too much and I do relish the independence to be honest."

Perhaps he can open for himself? "Or I can do an after party for myself as well. In fact, I can be a one-man industry," he says laughing.
