Excellent interview, good to see Hooky as a normal guy, I think he'd be a laugh out on the town for a night.

Cheers, Alan.

Always good to see/hear Hooky in a good mood. Cannae access youtube from work - will check it when I get home, well done on getting the interview :thumb:

Oh, and Rocket, if you burn any of my cassettes you will be hearing from my lawyer. All those cassettes came from working on a fucking milk float and doing a paper round, so the potentail of damages will be really high.

Rumpole Of The Bailey over and out.

Due to the FACT that Hooky wants to release some LIVE soundboard concerts i think forum ain't done 'em any favours. You gonna burn your cassettes?Thought not!:thumb: Funny how things are overlooked sometimes.Sorry Lads. :laugh:You couldn't make it up....p Which came first -the chicken or the chicken with it's head in the sand?

I remember the good old days when NEW ORDER encouraged selling PROMOS* eg SUBSTANCE GATEFOLD only if DESPERATE....beggars belief.I kept NUMBER 50 during the lean years though. * not for the PUBLIC....:blackeye:

I censored you a little there because I thought it was much needed, but this is something else, first Sebastien has nothing to do with it, and that forum was created to make sure it was not posted on the public areas of this website especially to make sure casuals wouldn't have access to it.

I'm 99% sure regulars of this website are buying all that is released by New Order anyways, collecting live bootlegs, and especially if not making any profit out of it is not usually something very bad. In fact, record labels and management contacted US to find out if we had live recordings and ideas of what they could use for their remaster "extra" discs and other projects.

We're more helping than the opposite me thinks. If Hooky or anybody else in the band had a problem with that we'd remove it in a heathbeat.

The last time I had a request from Hooky to remove stuff from this website is when somebody posted a link to a mp3 of The Killer's Shadowplay before it was even released.

I did remove the link as requested. That was original material. For live broadcasting from radio (such as BBC sessions) and live stuff, I have mixed feelings, I think it promotes more to spread them.. if you enjoy that live recording, you will probably go see them live.. and many of us love collecting alternate versions, and it won't stop us from buying them if they are released later.

Sure not the case for everyone, but I'm pretty sure those people wouldn't buy it anyways.

But I do get Hooky's point that side-projects are more vulnerable to this, but hey, it's part of today's reality sadly... bands make more money from touring than selling albums.

I did receive a Bad Lieutenant promo, I hope to get one from Freebass as well, I'm not giving them away, and I am buying the final product because I know that if I don't do that I might not have more, because I know each sales will be important for them (plus, I kind of like having the "product" itself)

Think RM was refering to someone being banned, ages ago due to an online "altercation" with Sebastien

As you well know, the BL promo's were only sent out in very limited quantities, according to form this was done to stop the album getting on the web. There have been a few on ebay, not from ep but with OUT promo stickers on them, make of that what you will.

I did recieve the promos and also got sent a cdr that someone had copied from a Russian torrent site.

It is a fact that people download illegally, and i can see where Hooky is coming from, not sure i would have left that bit in the interview to be honest.

The majority of people on here WILL buy the album in multiple formats, myself included.

Well, if that's the way many people feel, I have no problem closing it, really. I actually never check that one to be honest, and last time I checked, it had no moderator for ages.

It's a known fact I'm less present on this website, and also that Tim has major logging on issues I'm trying to resolve... I can't check everything.

I could probably add more moderators to filter content, IDK.. but will it change much? People will get the album one way or the other. Censorship has never been a good thing in history :evil4:

Maybe we need a written policy on the site. Guidance as to what may and may not be posted.

I'm sure no one here wishes to harm any of the musicians involved, or their livelihoods.

Once there is a proper policy posted, everyone knows where they stand. I don't think anyone would like to see official complaints about the site.

In the past, Hooky especially, has stated that he's happy with live bootlegs. However, no band members have stated that they condone posting of or linking to official releases.

Most of us are fans and yes, even if we manage to get our grubby mitts on a promo or two, we'll still buy the official release - often in all formats, but posting of official releases is a bit of a :nono:

Could we also clarify posting of radio interviews, etc. please?

As for leaving the subject out of the interview, I think that would be wrong Steve. My reasoning being that if that's what Hooky wished to say, directly to people here, after I'd specifically asked him - he obviously must feel strongly about it. I see no reason to deny him the platform to say so, just because some people (me included) may feel uncomfortable about it. I was genuinely unaware at the time of the interview that "Stalingrad" or a link to the track, had been posted here. Yes, I was embarrassed to find that out in person, but as a representative of NOOL I had to accept some responsibility. I could easily have left something that I personally found awkward out of the interview, but that would be the worst kind of censorship in my opinion - denying someone's right of reply in order to make myself look/feel better.

My belief was that no official releases or promo material was allowed here, but real fans swapping live gigs that we attended together was okay.

I can see it all from both sides, but we do need to take heed of what is said by the various band members and their management representatives - without their existence, there wouldn't be a NOOL or a WIM or any other fan/semi-official site.

Cheers guys

Good interview - and sorry for the blatant self-promotion (again!) but I managed to grab a few minutes with Hooky at the London book signing last week. Check out my blog:

Chris, please dont take my words out of context,i meant nothing disrespectful, just my opinion.

It seems that tensions are running high on this particular matter and i dont wish to add fuel to the flames.

Certain people have the right to feel agrieved and that has now been sorted, end of.

Just wish they'd get the Freebass stuff out there, perhaps nool (and other sites) could possibly do something on the distribution front, just an idea mind.

I didn't think for a moment that there was any disrespect meant Steve and certainly didn't take any. I didn't see it as taken out of context though, as it's in this thread and you said: "It is a fact that people download illegally, and i can see where Hooky is coming from, not sure i would have left that bit in the interview to be honest."

I simply replied with my reasons for leaving that part of the interview in. :thumb:

I agree, I'd love to see the Freebass stuff released, but there's not alot we can do about it unfortunately. :(

The Man Up North wrote: Great work there Chris. Made me realized it was YEARS ago when I first talked to you about writing articles for this site! Wow...

Thanks Seb. Yes, it's nearly ten years ago now mate. Before NOOL even started! I remember those first few emails - none of us knowing what to expect, etc. I wondered what I'd got myself into at the time... still do on occasion!

I still think that you and Nic achieved something special and thanks to the two of you, I've met my girlfriend, alot of other good friends and shared in some great conversations and experiences. Thank you both for all of that.

....this bit missed too I thought THIS was MUCH needed. If the PM and EMAIL links worked which have asked about on numerous occasions this could all have been done sneakily behind closed doors. The main reason i choose another account was the first one was blitzed.Like the fiasco where some waited a YEAR for Community 2 these problems were ignored. It is a good job we love a good disaster. Lovely site.

Well, censorship is one thing, but when something is asked to stay private and somebody post about it, it's something else.

But then again, if you hate everything we do, why do you bother :(

As for Community 2, there is a reason I closed the shop, I was sick and tired of having to deal with those issues of people not getting their order, I think WenOrder was overwhelmed with his baby and magazine and he couldn't handle it anymore, I have done all I could. If it makes you feel better, I still didn't receive my copies apart from the original ones I had and got signed by Hooky.

It's a hobby, you can't expect it to be perfect. If you knew how much time I spent working on that.

You could add something into the NOOL standards, but exactly how much attention / adherence does anyone pay to them and anyway they are only vaguely enforced at best.

It's not as if people are dumb either; the www is full of ripped music and it's not hidden too well.

Obviously NOOL can't promote wholesale ripping and linking of stuff that's for sale, but stuff that leaks around the sides like radio shows, concerts, remixes, etc... shouldn't be panicked over.

Anything that is a direct rip of a recently commercially availble track should be blocked.

The music industry has fundamentally changed and nothing can undo this.

Artists will in the future make money, although a lot less of it, primarily from live shows and value added releases (i.e. a DVD, Tshirt, cup, badges, Big poster, live performance, live ticker discount etc...) such as the Bad Lt. packages that are out there. The music itself will be more or less just the advert for this stuff. CDs still hold some attraction because of the quality of the sound, but the value added dimension is absolutely critical to sales.

Also, I doubt the well established artists such as NewOrder are living on the breadline, so although it's a shame, I'm sure they can tolerate the reduced levels of income and hell... all they have to do is a few reunion gigs and the tills will ring off the hook!

I understand Hooky's concerns, but I think the vast majority of people on here that download, still buy the official recording when it's available, quite a lot in all formats that are released and whatever imports, promos and limited editions they can get their hands on.

A lot of people here just want to hear the music as soon as possible, but prefer a good quality audio to listen to as soon as it's available. The main people who only download and never purchase music are kids that don't care about audio quality. we tend to be a fussy, but impatient bunch, but I'm sure He would hardly lose out from us.
