liverpool royal court...council benefit...new order, the fall and the smiths.....great line up however new order came on first when it should have been the fall and they were blatantly uninterested....shite venue and the order only played for about 30 mins..

sheffield city hall...miners benefit...new order,billy bragg and abc...line up not so good but amazingly new order came on first again...similar scenario.. they were keen to get off stage...i remember i never stayed to watch the other band(s)...we got out the venue for about 9pm!!!

To Mr. Blau and Mister Webmaster Sir, re. "Republic" collages: Don't be so harsh about it, remember this: it was 1993, as far as computers go we're talking the Stone Age here! I still think it's glorious... and ground-breaking in a time when even Pentium I was still a twinkle in a computer geek's eye!

On the contrary. Computers at this period offered more alternatives than ever before for designers. It is this that put a rabbit amongst the chaffinches. Big Pete and his band of merry typographic naturists were unable to chose any proper artistic direction from the unlimited plethora of imagery and fonts thus, we have a mixed bag of poor 'cheap looking' images and typefaces. In principal the idea was in keeping with NO art, but the execution was dire, as a direct result of computers offering the ability to 'do anything', and big Pete succumbing to this like a duck towards water.

It is only now, some 15 years on, that designers recognise 'not' to over use computers or to use computers as they were intended, as a tool to formulate ideas - not necessarily to give you the idea in the first place or supply an easy way out.

That is why 'Get Ready' is so good. It retains all the original Factory / NO ethos. Pete has designed something (presumably with computers) that looks old and new, and discards any stock-book easy street solution. You could expect to see this cover in the seventies, or eighties, or nineties or the naughty but nice zeros - but only by someone like Saville - who, it would seem, has now overcome his willing to utilise a computer to dictate his design - returning well and truly to his roots.

I feel duty bound to mention just how bad that Supermenlovers thing was.

Our minds can't comprehend the astronomical size of the skip required to house all of the bad remixes in the world, and that's just for NO.

There is no end to the list of bad remixes. The problem is that they tend to sound very outdated after a couple of years. What's hip today has gone stale tomorrow. The Hurley remixes of Fine Time and the Kevin Saunderson remixes of Round & Round sounded very fresh at the end of the 80s, but nowadays they're utter crap. The only good remixes of New Order songs are the ones they did themselves and a couple of classics like Jellybean's Confusion, Shep Pettibone's BLT and TF, Oakie's World Felix Da Housecat's HTS and Pete Heller's Regret. The Rest Of also has a couple of good ones (TBTHOG, Confusion). It is difficult to bring order in the other zillion remixes, but I think I have to agree that those Joe T. Vanelli (a relative of Milli Vanilli?) remixes hit rockbottom.
