I think Hooky has the date of the photograph wrong. This is more likely to have been 1992-1993, when they were doing Republic.

- haircuts - Bernard's, Gillian's, Steve's and Hooky's hair styles are more 90s. In particular, Bernard's hair in the photo looks like the same style that he had when he was promoting Electronic's first EP, which is after Technique. Gillian had longer hair in the late 80s, and here she's got it all cut short.
- Bernard's jeans - baggy, which is an early 90s thing

I disagree. Hooky has mentioned recording this album in his book about the Hac and how they all got off their faces "Big Time" (sorry about that...........)
If that photo was taken during the Republic period, there would have blood and guts everywhere. Plus they would have all been superimposed together as Barney and Hooky hated each others guts during this recording period....

Yep, I reckon it's 1992/93 too. They look identicle to how they look in the Regret video.
It's definitely Republic era - they look identical to the Regret video. Barney still had the wartime orphan haircut in '88-'89 - his hair here is identical to the Electronic cover of Melody Maker in late '90 after they'd opened for Depeche Mode in LA.
I have zero confidence in Hooky recalling dates - especially after reading his book.
Have to agree with our American chums, it definitely looks more like the Republic era. The haircuts really are a dead giveaway and just look at Bernard's face, (more than usual) fucking miserable! 
They may have hated each other then but their paths would have physically crossed at some point during the recording process, even if only for the obligatory photo.
I don't think the cropped Gillian hair appeared at all during the Technique years, she still had shoulder length then? Definitely 1992ish.

but I wouldn't like to bet hard currency that's a photo from the Technique recording sessions.
Republic was also done at Real World, hence the confusion.
It bodes well for his two upcoming JD/NO books though, maybe someone with a memory should proof read them.

That's Stephen Hague on the right. He did a nice remix of Round & Round but was otherwise not involved with the production of Technique.
Is that Stephen Hague on the far right or behind Steve? I just remembered that this photo is included in Hooky's Hacienda book but is undated... just reads "at Real World studios". The person on the right is listed as New Order's American manager Tom Atencio.
The question is, is Atencio the guy to the far right or sitting behind Steve slightly obscured? Must admit I know what Hague looks like but didn't think that was him on the far right in that shot. Could be wrong.

Hague is the one right behind Steve. No doubt it's from Republic era. How young Sarah looks!!! A teenager indeed but not sympathic as usual!!!
