I'd be surprised. Very surprised.
This episode has great comic potential. Cannae wait to hear Hooky's response.
i've actually got an ongoing career, so I don't feel the need to exploit my past glories. I exist in the here and the now !!!
I’m getting back with the “real”players tomorrow thank fuck. Can’t be doing with talentless nostalgia fuckwit whores
...'course, he's currently rehearsing the whole of Screamadelica with the Primals. No nostalgia or exploiting past glories there, no way!
What can I possibly add that hasnt already said?
My initial reaction was that the account has been hacked. And I wouldnt be surprised if that was the case.
Pretty heavy stuff from Mani then, bringing rotting corpses into it. Im still not convinced its 100% genuine though.
What a mess. It's a pity when it has to come this between mates in my view, and a bit pathetic.I can see them both looking like a pair of bitter tweeting daft cunts if this continues.
I imagine it must be pretty annoying to have a band split up publicly and have this all aired via the internet for everyone to see
hmmm...
There is a possibility it's been hacked.
But that's a very specific hacker and let's face it, it does sound like Mani in full flow. That Roses conversational swagger in all it's tedious glory.
Just washing their dirty laundry in public. Manchester, innit. People in smaller houses are still screaming this sort of stuff over the backhard fence in their hair rollers. Those with too much leylandii between them need to resort to modern methods. Elsewhere on the internet, embarrassed relatives are hissing "will you come inside, the whole Tweet can hear".

I doubt it, the bloke who posted it on Sabotage Times knows the Primals very well and is an ex-editor of NME

Wonder if he's feeling good and knew that he would?
I'll get ma coat.
This is really fucking sad.
I wish Mani hadn't felt the need to express himself in these terms. But if this all blew up because Mani wanted to tour/promote Freebass while Hooky has been busy booking up his schedule with various other tours, then I do see his point.
If you spend as much time as they have on making a record, finding a vocalist, investing time, energy and money in the project, not to mention fretting about how best to release it for as long as they have...well, then you might as well try to do the record justice when it comes out.
"The Thoughts of Chairman Mani", now available as limited edition "splatter painting" red book, only £450, suckers! maybe not...

What he said.
The writers doing some work for the Primals right now, he's got direct access to the band members and as an experienced journo is unlikely to have put that on his site without validating the source.
Have been following Mani on Twitter for a while and the writing style is completely consistent plus there's information within the Tweets (not posted on ST) that a hacker wouldn't know.
This is legit and no great surprise.
Shame really. Took 5 years to deliver the album and they've fallen out before the physical format has even been released.
The reason Rourke left Freebass is cos he was pissed off with Hooky
Tony Casanova wrote: ..not to mention fretting about how best to release it...
Intentional or accidental guitar puns always lighten the mood.
Well this is still publicity of the most awful kind and will probably do the Freebass CD sales no end of good!
What an embarrassment, I just hope Mani actually said all this stuff to Hooky's face before sharing it with the world.......I get the feeling he would have....he is no patsy.
Game over.
I am shocked to hear this.
http://fuc51.blogspot.com/2010/09/mani-rants-and-we-briefly-oil-creaking.html
Stone Roses, Primal Scream and no longer Freebasser Mani, has gone on a huge Twitter rant provoking FUC51 to peer out from the duvet and share his rallying cry against a certain someone who has been something of a target on these very pages. Is the Manc old guard finally turning on itself like a shark attacking its own wound? Read over for Mani's diatribes.
Here are Mani's rants against Peter Hook (all [sic]):
"3 things visible from space, great wall of china, peter hooks wallet stuffed with ian Curtis blood money, man citys empty trophy cabinet !."
"quite disgusting and very crass and self centred violation of memories for personal financial gain. Scummy behaviour really"
"he ain't got time for me now he's getting fortunes for dragging his mates cadaver round the world getting himself paid. Thank fuck"
"used to adore the man, now he's a self centred sellout reduced to hawking his mates corpse around to get paid. And he can't play"
"I'm fine, dunno about the vulture who is ravenously devouring the last morsels of putrid flesh from Wilson/Curtis bones [...] I'm getting back with the "real"players tomorrow thank fuck. Can't be doing with talentless nostalgia fuckwit whores."
"and I haven't even started on the cunts amateur night, one trick pony shite 2 string bass playing yet either. Used to laugh [...] we were all laughing behind his back watching the stupid wank struggle to do the same old shit he's done for the last 30 years !!"
On Freebass - "it's where it belongs mate.... In the fuckin bargain bin before it's even released. you live and learn. I'm still no 1 though."
And finally - "recovered from my vicious rants of last night.dont take to kindly to getting mugged off by people who cant hold a torch to me [...] either personally or professionally. ever wondered why im universally loved, and another manc ex legend in his own mind is despised by most [...] simple really, treat people with the same respect as you would expect from them, live in the present, and dont surround yourself with [...] yes men, nodding dogs and sycophants !!!"
Of course, Mani is covering himself in glory by saying he's universally loved, which of course, he isn't. However, it is funny to imagine him sat in front of a spittle-flecked screen, hammering away on Twitter in the early hours... well worth coming out of retirement for.
This clearly makes us as bad as Hooky by not quitting when we really should have. As penance, FUC51 is off to FAC251 to talk to pink faced 40somethings about how Es were better when they cost £20 whilst wearing a floppy sunhat.
"can't hold a candle to me personally or professionally"
I had to put gaffer round my belly when I read that to stop it exploding in LOLs
I must have missed "Mani plays Claypool" or "the Victor Wooten and Mani's Hot Grooves" Tuition DVD series.
Certainly missed his polyphonic solos on the Freebass album.
Twat.
As for past glories etc......yup rehearsing Screamadelica.....and there's not an old song in sight on the freebass album, Mani lives in an alternate reality (a perfectly good thing for a bassman of course).
Y'all think I'm right up Hooky's arse...and you may be right, but not just Hooky, I am passionate about my rumbleplank, and adore and laud anyone who shoves it up the front and says "Fuck you, this is my bass, it does a lot more than play root notes and 12 bar fuckin boogie wanker woogie!!!!!!"
Mani is a great player and all, but viewed in the above context, we are talking............
Hooky Mani
Next he'll be telling me this guy is living off Wynona's Big Brown Beaver and the South Park theme.
Oh and in my dictionary under "fuck you, this is my bass" is pretty much this tune (along with a great deal of The Hookster's output). I particularly enjoy the crazy loud bit at the end.
Tell you what Mani...learn to play like that cunt, THEN start talkin about who you're better than you micrococked fucktard!
I was wondering when Cambo would pop up with a post that would make you literally cringe to be a New Order fan. Easy lad. To anyone new reading we're not all like that ![]()
I am beginning to feel a bit sorry for the Hookster. He's taken a fair old bit of flack on these forums over the past couple of years. Sometimes the flack was deserved and sometimes not. Now it seems to be coming directly from a (former?) band mate in a very public manner. I don't imagine the "Curtis & Wilson rotting flesh" comment will be opening any doors at FAC251 any time soon.
So... Hooky first finished New Order and now this side-project... Tendencies... Well done, maestro! Just joking :)
My three cents into the death of New Order:
It's perfectly fine they stopped in 2006. They made youth music, first of all. Sadly English musicians don't have retirement outlets like Americans (blues, country, folk), so there. The glorious years are apparently behind, so it's better to stop with a good face. Have them dig out rarities, concerts, tapes, etc. like all other bands do after they disband... Business as usual.
Hooky should have teamed with Potts again - seems it always worked out fine. Maybe a new band, 'Luxembourg'? And Bernard maybe should continue his electronic side with... Electronic (just please no more guitarry shit like on TT).
All these exclusive products, Hacienda nights... etc. Of course, it's all nostalgia marketing, without any judgment here. The very image of Factory Records was there was some mystery, or better put, the wise lack of proper information that made the whole scene attractive!! Now opening all the doors and boxes, it loses its appeal at accelerating pace. I want to forget the present and just think of the past on my own, without lectures!

'Swat I'm talkin about.....Hooky is merely one example of a man who wont stand at the back and be unknown just cos he plays the coolest instrument.....but no, I just wanna bum him in your head LOL.
(I notice Barney shoves his plankist into the shadows these days)
Yes Cambo, do you have anything else other than a big anti-bass conspiracy, mate? :) The actual person slagging off Hooky this time is a bassist himself.
No "nasty" Bernard this time I'm afraid.
Come on Liam, you must have a small essay prepared on this
Actually, official confirmation is here. There is a statement of sorts on the official Freebass group on Facebook:
Freebass – (and so we face...) The Final Curtain
It is with great sadness that just prior to the long awaited album release of “It’s A Beautiful Life” we have to announce that the much anticipated Mancunian union of bassists, Freebass, is no longer a functioning group. ... Recent events have made Freebass entirely unviable as a band, and with this in mind, it has been decided that the project should be shelved, rather than placed on hiatus while members pursue their other interests.
The band would like to take the opportunity to thanks friends and fans for their support and interest, especially on the UK tour in June 2010. We also hope that people will enjoy the album, which concludes five years of work and treat it on its own merits.
No third parties were involved or harmed in the break up.
Posted 20 minutes ago.
So looks like it's all gone a bit pear shaped really.
Sadly not.
Its nothing I havent said ad nauseam over the last year.
No matter how embarrasing Hooky becomes, Its unlikely he'll do anything as bad as Primal Scream were and are. Whilst Monaco at the Ritz is the worst gig I've ever seen, the time I saw Primal Scream isnt far behind. Dreadful, simply dreadful.
Its not like Mani hasnt joined in Hookys nostalgia fest over the last few years. What with his residency at the neo Hacienda, his apparent willingness to drop a soundbite about the good old days anytime someone offers him a few quid, his playing of Stone Roses riffs during Primal Scream gigs, playing Stone Roses songs with Brown, his never ending DJ gigs charing £20 a pop to nostalgia mugs etc.
But, he does have a point though.
Martin has it down best, as usual.
By the way, somebody told me on Thursday night that what I say and what I have said, well, no one agrees with. Obviously, thats a lie. But when a member of a band that Hooky is in comes out and says what I've said, bloody hell... thats vindication

If the account was hacked---then the hacker has done a great job imitating Mani's tweets. And reading this thread, and some of the info, I'm having doubts that it was hacked.
I assumed the members of Freebass were getting along with each other and making music, just like Bernard and his mates are doing with BL...
Yes, he's going to be doing that Screamadelica tour, but Primal Scream is an ongoing band that has released albums every few/several years---their latest in 2008 and they toured that one well into 2009. So while he may be in the past to some extent, he's still looking forwards to some extent as well. (That doesn't make him better or worse than Hooky, but just to clarify.)
That said, in this day and age with technology, words spread very fast don't they?

True. But "I'm better than him" is such a 14 year old thing to say...especially when you play like Mani.
Even their website says that it is over.

Seems very apt this:
Novelty - Joy Division.
When people listen to you don't you know it means a lot,'Cos you've got to work so hard for everything you've got. Can't rest on your laurels now,Not when you've got none. You'll find yourself in a gutter,Right back where you came from.Someone told me being in the know is the main thing. We all need the security that belonging brings. Can't stand on your own in these times,Against all the odds,You all just fall behind like all the other sods. You slap our backs and pretend you knew about,All the things that we were gonna do.What ya gonna do, what ya gonna do,When it's over? You're on your own now,Don't you think that's a shame? But you're the only one responsible to take the blame. So what ya gonna do when the novelty has gone?Yeah, what ya gonna do when the novelty has gone? You slap our backs,And pretend you knew about,All the things we were gonna do.What ya gonna do, what ya gonna doWhen its over?

Not hacked. That is Mani.
Rourke left Freebass a while back because he couldn't put up with Hooky so it's not been a happy camp for a while.
Most high profile musicians don't run with multiple projects simultaneously - if they're in more than one band they focus on one at a time so there's no diary clashes and all their promotional work is focussed on the band with a release out at that time. Hooky's pissed all over this golden rule and shown why it exists - by putting the UP gig out there when he should have just been thinking about Freebass. Hooky's now received tour offers from promoters who like the look of UP, which he's decided to accept, leaving no time for Freebass activity. Where does that leave Briggs and Mani? who've made sacrifices to devote time to this project?. Has Hooky consulted with them as and when he's looked at touring UP? If not, it leaves them looking like 2nd class citizens.
Still wondering if it would take a Hacker to make the comments on Mani's Twitter account ![]()

My thoughts changed that I can believe it's Mani, after reading those tweets and this thread.
Freebass split. A nation thinks about shrugging it's shoulders then asks 'who?'
Mani sounds like he's got the right 'ump doesn't he? If Hooky's guilty of anything it's listening to bad advice and mis-judging the mood of what now appears to be the majority of his fan base. There's a couple of people who seem to have his ear (one whom has made quite snotty posts on here when anyone's dared question the dodgy 'revival' nights he's promoting) and who seem intent on exploiting the brand potential of the Hacienda/Factory. If these boards are anything to go by then that's not really what the majority of people to whom the brand meant something actually want. Bad judgement.
It doesn't warrant some of Mani's comments, especially the ones where he mocks Hooky's bass playing abilities. That's playground shit. But a lot of what he said rings true I'm sad to say.
Not to worry kids, at least we've still got the joyous AOR of 'Dad' Lieutenant (see what I did there?)

Hmmm and my dads bigger than your dad
you smell etc etc
pretty dire stuff.
I have to say that whilst the album isnt the best thing ever the music really gained a lot of oomphh when i saw them live in mcr . also it was good to see hooky still creating something new.
mind you I bet bernards laughing his cock off!!

Now is as good a time as any for Hooky, BL etc to give it up, have a two year break, do nothing except walk the dog, say f*** all to the press or anywhere online and then give us all a few last gigs with the proper line up of New Order.
Kerching...everyone goes home happy and its a fitting end to it all.
Its embarrassing to be a fan with all this malarkey.

Reminds me of the reaction he had in some interview, where they'd just told him about Hookys bass from the hac wood. He had a pleasant chuckle, and I'm sure he's having another.
The t shirt I bought at the gig only survived two washes ...perhaps it was a sign..................
I've got a "friend" who has fallen out with literally every single mate he's got. Yet he's still the victim, and we're the cunts in his mind.
One wonders how much self awareness Hooky has. There is a definate trend developing here; one hopes he is noticing it and will reflect at length......
gmex88 wrote: The t shirt I bought at the gig only survived two washes ...perhaps it was a sign..................
These things happen for a reason.
A band with 3 "star" bass players was never going to work out was it? even the mighty Ned's Atomic Dustbin didn't push it past having 2 bass players...

Pretty sure thats like critical mass or something. The only way I wanna see a band with 3 drummers is through a VERY large telescope.
BTW I really like the album. Better than 90% of Revenge, 50% of Monaco and 100% of Sad Loot. (still barely scores against even New Order's cutting room floor sweepings, but so do all the side projects and splinter cells)
Mani must be a very frustrated by Hooky. So he has to publish the argument to a wide audience. It's a little bit amazing. Now the same happen to Hooky, what he did three years ago to Bernard and New Order.
Doctor? wrote: BTW I really like the album. Better than 90% of Revenge, 50% of Monaco and 100% of Sad Loot. (still barely scores against even New Order's cutting room floor sweepings, but so do all the side projects and splinter cells)
When one of the members of the band rants via Twitter that the album should be in the bargain bin I think that speaks volumes about what was thought of it, Cambo. Not the fans talking, one of the guys who actually wrote and played on it.
Freebass in a nutshell: five years in the making, endless hype, restricting later gig tickets to AMEX credit card holders but splitting up in a haze of bitter acrimony before the physical LP is even released. Spinal Tap would blush. Erm, Spinal Tap were a proper band by comparison... as a New Order fan first and foremost I hope Hooky consigns this non-starter of a band to the dustbin and does something musically better in a year or two. Something unrelated to the Hac or Joy Division would be nice.
I've still got a wee bit of faith left he could pull something out of the bag eventually.

We still have the 'Closer' and 'Still' tours yet though.
After a band (in this case New Order) breaks up in a public and ugly way, you'd think the side projects (if I can call it that) would not be breaking up in a public and ugly way (regardless of the quality of the music.)
Of course, Electronic isn't musically functioning, but at least Bernard and Johnny didn't have a falling out. And I also think they're on good terms with the guest musicians they collaborated with as well.
I've already seen a couple Japanese comments online (not on NOOL btw) that even though they've heard that the Unknown Pleasures tour will be coming to Japan (1 date), that they don't want to go (even if they were interested previously), or are hesitating to go, or feel awkward about going after hearing all this stuff regarding Mani and Hooky and the JD thing.

Talk about bad press, sheesh this really is stirring some things up eh?
Of course, I'm not saying everyone thinks like that, but there were some comments like that. And the JD tour is quite extensive, right, judging from that other thread here that listed the touring locations?
I'm not wishing bad luck for Hooky, but there's a possibility it could affect the attendance for the JD tour.
Sad but inevitable. Freebass was always on shaky legs.
Maybe Hooky will do what he should have done ages ago and reform Monaco.

Monaco had its day. No financial gain in going back there.
"The Light" doing Revenge, Monaco, Freebass, Hooky stuff (and a little JD/NO) would feel more acceptable but I think all we are gonna see now from the man is Joy Division tours until the interest dries up. Much like Hooky has absolutely battered the DJ circuit for years.
Now if Freebass had been more of a priority over the last 5 years and not the DJ'ing, spoken word tours, books, nostalgia tours etc we might have had a more viable and successful solo project to enjoy.
A stop-start part time rock and roll band was never gonna work....needs 100% or nothing.

And as for someone who played on it thinking it's shit....you should know enough musos to know that's par for the course even when there's not a hate fueled hissy fit in full flight.
Dear Hooky,
finish your JD-tours, then lean back in your armchair, take a time-out and in one or two years team up with your old mates from a serious pop group for a round of serious farewell-gigs. What's happening to Freebass right now is very bad and tragic comedy. I can't imagine even Barney and Steven laughing about it. Or do they play just in the same low league this Mani-wanker is playing in?
New Order do a 'farewell tour'???? They're not fucking Status Quo!
Like Ally said, Freebass was/is essentially, shit. Mani is just saying what everyone else, even 99% of the people who attended their gigs, has been saying. I would be surprised if the acrimony had anything to do with Mani desparately wanting to tour Freebass and Hooky putting the kybosh on it. I suspect Mani couldn't be less interested in having anything to do with the project. As with most fights in 'business' it'll have it's roots in £££.
Some people say they want a reunion/farewell gig from NO. But how realistic is that?
You could want something but in the current situation do people think it's that realistic? I personally don't think so.
Looks like Mani's twitter account has now disappeared.
Final "tweets" (god I hate that term):
"maniscream: i was totally not in my right mind, i think you will know what i mean.this is mani bidding twitter goodbye. xxx maniscream: had a total wobble last night. sorry about the ranting,im not in a good place right now,and directed my venom at somebody who doesnt deserve it,a probably soon to be ex best mate. im embarassed to fuck. that behaviour aint me. peter hook,i love you and im super sorry geeza maniscream: Everything is ok. Have to admit tho,I have been getting the increasing feeling of whether what Hooky is doing is a little bit of going against the Factory/New Order/Joy Division ethic a tad....selling out to almost raping proportions. But maybe that's just my own rose-tinted idealogy of how I want things to stay...you know, enigma stuff & all that.& I fookin' love the guy,a real 'hero'.....bad taste in mouth :(

Look, at the end of the day no matter what has actually happened between the 2 of them, which will remain private no matter how much people like to think they know about it and want to carry on speculating, Mani was wrong to do what he did and he has since apologised profusely and regrets it a great deal. I was backing up all the clutter in my FTP account the other day and found Hooky's (and his auntie's) appearance on Salford City Radio back in 2005.
Obviously I don't know Peter Hook whatsoever, but I've always had a sense that if nothing else the man is authentic. Nostalgic, yes, but the nostalgia's never struck me as false.
The radio show's still there for anyone who's interested (14.6MB). A sonic souvenir of happier times, I suppose?

Thanks for the feedback Jack but I'm very comfortable with the source of my information. A resignation speech can be tailored for its audience I guess.
Not disputing how much time your Dad has invested into the album - and from his Tweets, Mani would appear to be happy to let Hooky take the credit for it too - my point was they, (incl Gary), had all made a committment to Freebass when they could have been doing other things and then it would appear your Dad's focus has shifted just as the album was ready for release. The press release appears to confirm this.
Your Dad has decided to deprioritise Freebass of his own choice because he has another project which, for whatever reason, he prefers to spend time on. Gary and Mani are leaving Freebass because the situation has been forced upon them. It's difficult not to recognise Mani's disappointment with this situation.
So your Dad has made The Light his priority over and above Freebass. Not good for Mani or Gary but how does this affect you Jack?
Something worth bearing in mind with this whole 'raping of Curtis' corpse' chat is this.....When Hooky left New Order the band originally planned to carry on without him. They auditioned a few folk for the job of Hooky's replacement (a daunting task) one of whom is an established musician and good friend of one of my good friends.
The plan, from what I'm told, was for New Order to tour a set made up exclusively of Joy Division songs around the festival circuit in 2007. It was clearly an attempt at 'cashing in' on the hype surrounding Control. For reasons unknown, possibly to do with Hooky's legal threats, the plans were abandoned. A few people on here already know this story, I told them it at the time, and, like Johnny Giles, I know that the sources of this story (there were two) are solid.
Just worth considering this before making out that the idea of 'cashing in' is one exclusive to Hooky.
So, the greatest band on Earth has been reduced to this? What a fucking mess.
If anyone sees a former member of Neworder, or their musical associates, please remove any and all spades in their possession.
Thank you.

A cash-in without Hooky would have been as much as a bad idea as a cash-in without Barney/Steve.
Two wrongs wont make a right.
Only the three of em could do gigs like that and keep face (and actually do the songs some justice).
In fact even if they fucked it up it would still have some credibility and gravitas (and would probably make a fortune).
Signed A. Dreamer.
Probably the most exciting bit of news we've had here since Recycle. Sad that it's more comedic than pathetic though.
Theres too much focus on the "cash-in" aspects, in my opinion. Its used as a stick to beat whoever. We would all love another New Order tour, perhaps a farewell one. From a certain point of view that could also be described as "cashing-in" but we'd be happy for that to happen.

If a concert was announced that was just Gilbert/Hook/Morris/Sumner I will be more than happy to help them cash in. Anything other than that I just couldn't care less.

One assumes that's the Royal "we" you're using there, Gene? Personally, I'm not sure many on here really thought Mr Hook was 'cashing in' with the I-Used-To-Be-In-Joy-Division tour, at least not any more than New Order had been 'cashing in' since '98.
I did, however, think the whole concept was a pile of stinking fucking wank.

Would it be called 'End Of The Road'? Maybe 'The Last Waltz'? How about 'One For The Road'? Please, they're not Genesis. In the event that hell freezes over and they do play together again they're hardly likely to bill it as a 'farewell tour' for christ's sake.
It took, what? 5 years to realize Hooky is a total dickhead. trying to relive Ian's legacy, thats twice now. Once with Revenge and now this. Monaco is no more becuase Pott/ Hooky on-stage arguement in 2000, oh well live and learn.

New Order Thing... An image conceived by Rob and chaotically put in practice out of neccessity by the poor guys. I don't know, 1985 was 25 years ago.
Sadbass.................Whilst not great the 100 club gave a great opportunity to see the man play bass, should have realalised something was up when mani flicked our man the v sign, those 19 seconds of film i have of the gig, makes me smile, no filming, no wonder.
as for the joy division stuff , why not he helped write the songs so why not play em,, make money,, he lost loads so Quid pro quo.
it means a lot.
One thing that comes through here, and in many (and Mani) a rant is the "living off Curtis" angle.
This annoys the pish out of me, it smacks of the accuser being into the whole "Cult of the Curtis Corpse" that I thought was only for 13 year old goths (or fuckin emus). Joy Division without any of it's members would have been MUCH less mighty. I could listen to a JD instrumental quite happily, possibly even slightly happier that a track with drums or bass or guitar removed. Not to mention the fact that there is 4 times as much material recorded as New Order than as JD, some of which, in case the accusers hadn't noticed, was actually quite good.
I'm usually pretty good at spotting corpse feeders as it's a pet hate of mine, but I don't see very much of it here.
I have to say as well, that The Light's treatment of JD songs piss on NO's latter day attempts, ever since Barney started fucking busking like a spastic all the way through tunes[1], and ever since Shadowplay developed a fucking GROOVE!!!!
For crying out loud, Leadfoot plays it more true to type than STEVE! (I appreciate this is a stoningworthy statement but I stand by it).
I do worry about over use of "the brand" (yuk), but I think people are way too hard on ANY ex member who tries to "cash in".....those tunes are their feckin pension you know!!!
[1] A massive pet hate, makes me angry just writing about it...it's one of the biggest differences between Ye Olde Newe Orderre and the later incarnations....watch PFD...sings a bit....plays a bit, sometime does both, makes fearfully excellent guitar noises often. Now watch Glasgow 06....bouncing up and down strumming like a tube station tune tart, stick his finger in his ear, shove an arran cardigan on him and it'd be "How does it feel hay nonny nonny". I seem to be utterly alone in noticing, never mind not liking this. Best of it is that the daft chimp hasn't enough air in his lungs to bounce like tigger and sing at the same time, hence him sounding asthmatic half the time. Rant over, and yes I do still think barney is a genius.
EDIT: for the record....I probably could listen to most bands quite happily sans guitar tracks.....but not JD/NO
Do we know how many people bought the freebass album on mp3 download from the Hac site. I was one but i would be amazed if it topped 100 and mainly on here.
The fact is we are all 'diehards' and will be always curious about anything related to joy division and new order and whilst that loyal market exists we will continue to give up cash and time to devote to our obsession.

Not sure what you mean here, what has a New Order thing got to do with it? At the end of the day they are musicians with a tremendous back catalogue. Why not have one last hurah for all the fans who have supported them over the years and a chance for both us and them to say - thanks for a brilliant 30 years of brilliant music?

While I have no doubt that that Bernard Sumner and Steven Morris (along with Phil) planned to continue as New Order after Hooky quit (which they had a right to, Hooky voluntarily left the group) I'm gonna have to call bullshit on your claim that New Order were planning to do a 2007 tour of only JD songs.
First off, Bernard Sumner has, for his entire career, always been more interested in moving forward and making new music, as opposed to basking in nostalgia. Sure, he'll do a few JD songs in a NO or BL set, but there is no way Bernard would to an entire tour of only JD songs. Bernard was New Order's main songwriter, as an artist, do you honestly he would prefer to play a whole set of JD songs other than his own work?
Known fact. In the fall of 2006, Bernard Sumner wanted to go back into the studio and finish a new New Order record. Peter Hook wanted to the tour of the UK and South America. Hooky won, they did the tour, and then Hooky quit.
In mid 2007, Bernard Sumner announced that he and Steve Morris would continue making music as Bad Lieutenant, and that Alex James, Phil, and Jake Evans would be involved.
A year later, Bad Lieutenant release a 14 track record that actually garners good reviews, and do a surprising amount of touring, playing 7 brand New Bad Lieutenant songs sprinkled with New Order, Electronic, and a few JD tracks.
So, out of New Order, Steven Morris still works with Sumner, Phil C still works with Sumner, Gillian Gilbert has been at a bunch of BL gigs.
Hooky quits NO, ditches Freebass to tour UP with people who had nothing to do with JD, and alienates his other FB bandmates in the process.
Actions speak louder than words.
While he will play older tracks in concerts, Bernard is clearly, clearly more interested in making new music, and still works with the other members of New Order.
Hooky ditches new music from Freebass to play JD songs with sessions musicians, alienated Morris and Sumner, and alienated Freebass.
Somehow though, Bernard Sumner is the villain in all of this...and of course, Bad Lieutenant sucks (I love BL myself). And Hooky had NOTHING to do with New Order falling apart...even though 3/4ths of New Order still tour and record together.
Hmmmm.
That being said, I'll always have a lot of respect and love for old Hooky. The whole affair is sad.

'I'm going to call bullshit on your claims'. What a fantastically wanky American turn of phrase that is; 'call bullshit'. As with most Americanisms, it doesn't even make sense.
'Call bullshit' all you want my friend and feel free to construct rambling 'theories' on the 'whats, whys and wherefores' of New Order's demise. I was merely reporting a well established fact (known by many round these parts) to put the whole subject of 'cashing in' into context.
This is hilarious. On a related note, I had my library on shuffle last week and this horrible track came on. I couldn't believe I had actually added it to my iTunes so I got up to see what was playing.

The plan, from what I'm told, was for New Order to tour a set made up exclusively of Joy Division songs around the festival circuit in 2007. Just worth considering this before making out that the idea of 'cashing in' is one exclusive to Hooky.
Why, they did exclusively JD set in January 2006. Actually by what I saw it was terrific and the band was enjoying it... so there.
Well, we all know that Mani will go back to Primal Scream (and I personally like them) but what's next for Hooky?
Theres always more books to be written, perhaps we'll get MADCHESTER MONOPOLY. Pieces of Erasmus, Wilson, Morley, Hooky, Curtis, Shaun Ryder, Bez, and for the hell of it John Simm.

Thats a frigging great idea. Do it for charity, make it online orders only and do it in time for Christmas.

Yes, but that was a one off.

No it wasn't. They'd done it a few months before with the John Peel night.
Hooky's answer @ Yorkshire Evening Post
Yesterday Hook told the YEP he was baffled by Mounfield's outbursts. "I don't know what's brought it on unless someone's kidnapped his phone and is playing a cruel gag," he said. He'd been unable to contact Mounfield but suspected "the problem" was connected to a number of offers he had received to perform the Joy Division album Unknown Pleasures in its entirety. "It's interesting to get this criticism from Mani when he's doing (a live revival of the 1991 Primal Scream album] Screamadelica himself," he said. "I'm very proud of the Freebass album," he added. "Playing Unknown Pleasures I'm very proud of. I've got nothing to complain about." Mounfield's comments had been "an unfortunate bit of timing" with the record, which had taken five years to complete, so close to release but, he reflected: "When you have people like Mani and Rourkey (in a band] you're going to have a volatile mix. "It's like siphoning petrol – sometimes it can blow up in your face."

Its nice to see that Hooky has the dignity not to stoop to Mani's level. Hooky is well rid of him in my opinion.
M1 wrote: Didn't the forward-looking Mani appear in 24HPP?
He did. I could never work out if he was supposed to be himself at a Happy Mondays soundcheck or part of the Happy Mondays crew who looked alot like an older version of the bloke out of the Stone Roses.
Valid reasons for Rourke and Mani to be mad...?
-Why did it take so long for Freebass records to come out? So Hooky could take ownership and connect it to the Hacienda, with Hacienda Records? Are they mad because he released it in this fashion, on his label, after so long a time, with the rather pointless digital release first and to what seems like very little attention?
-Instead of going ahead with Freebass live, Hooky used his time/resources to start up the new Hacienda homage club first. Then put Freebass on the back burner yet again so he could do spoken word and Unknown Pleasures homage shows.
-The band lead singer. Really, in the end, why did Hooky even bother to release the album?

trying to remain unbiased so i don't trigger a pointless back lash, I'm saddend at the split of the band as I was the split of monaco, electronic and new order, i thought most of the songs from the album were good and live they were great.
I doubt Hooky is at home twiddling his thumbs thinking what shall I do now, but if at some point he is and thinks "I think I'll have a chat with Bernard", then I'd be over the moon.
OR, if he could do something with Arthur Baker, that would be fantastic.

At this rate you'd probably get a collab with Rihanna. Even worse than Freebass.

I'll add Mark E Smith as was mentioned earlier, plus sweeten the pot with every gameboard being made from Hac dancefloor wood. On the flip side is a Quija board for halloween. And every set comes with an unsold copy of the Freebass album. That way everybody wins.

Judging by his recent Freebass remixes I reckon it would be less than fantastic.

I don't get all this hatred towards Hooky. I mean, the guy is so passionate about all his projects... I hope he manages to form a nice new group, I'd really miss his bass.
As greedy as it may seem, his nostalgia feels sincere to me. It is sad that a NO reunion seems so unlikely...

Being stuck on that guest-list automatically must be awful Jack. At least the place would have been packed with die-hard Fall fans, no doubt.

If you must know, I wasn't on any guestlist as I was working. But I still had time to watch some and in my opinion it completely sucked.

Arthur Baker recent remix of Cold Cave Life Magazine is pretty damn good, his best in years.
I care. But I loved the Freebass output (and the BAd Loo output too!).
So... if Hooky is the star, which he is, why not reform Freebass with other bass players. Although not from Manchester, John McVie's bass on the last Fleetwood Mac album, Say You Will, is brilliant.

na... wasn't it the late show with Monkey Man shouting 'yer a bunch of fookin amateurs' after the power cut out, being the breakthrough?
That edition of TOTP was the best ever. It also featured Orbital straight out of Pizza Hut first time live, and I think it had Adamski on it, when he was good, til he met that Seal bloke.

no my point was Barney had done it all a year before when New Order did Fine Time on TOTP.Though really they had done it 5 years before with their TOTP appearance doing Blue Monday, possibly, i've had a lot of wine now and am getting a bit muddled
Madchester, and everything that came out of it, was shit.
The real revolution was happening elsewhere, and it didn't involve guitars.

Oh yeah of course.I agree. I always felt sorry for 18 year old Roses and Mondays fans who had missed out on the classic New Order gigs of early to mid eighties.Poor souls. And, obviously, the best British band of the late 80s and early 90s was, of course, House Of Love.HOL pissed all over Stone Roses.
