R.E.M. NO reference

Lyric from That Someone Is You (title sound familiar?), track from the new (dull as dishwater) R.E.M. album:

"With the restraint of New Order covers, Young Marble Giants I sat quietly waiting For someone else to make the first move Someone has to make the first move... "

What's that all about then? Apart from Barney and Stipey sharing a birthday, I can't think of much to link these bands. In fact I'm sure an interview from the 80s had Stipe or Buck criticizing them (or was it Stephen Hague's production now I think of it...)

I was not that impressed with the new album also, but the song "Oh my heart" is very good on the new album.

I remember an R.E.M. interview in N.M.E. from the late '80's/early '90's where they asked Peter Buck's opinions on current UK bands. Peter said that they had seen New Order live but that they sounded "out of tune".

Way back in the 80s, I recall reading somewhere that Stephen Hague was brought in by WEA to 'tidy-up' a REM album (dont remember which one) but Stipey & co absolutely hated it and vetoed its release.

So hidden somewhere in WEA's vault, there's a Pet Shop Boys sounding REM album...

I actually like Jesus Mary Chain's The Hardest Walk remixed by Stephen for a movie soundtrack....

It was actually back in their IRS days, Hague was brought in to demo Murmur. But they hated the endless retakes and having to use click-tracks and synths. Funny that years later their first album without Bill Berry featured these things and even released a remix album on their website :)

Both have great dancers for lead singers.

"Dull as dishwater" - opinionated much? IMO, Collapse into now is their best effort in a long while, they have as much conviction and spirit on this new album as they had in their pre-Warner days, which is more than can be said for the latest efforts of most bands of their generation. Getting back on point, I have no idea what the lyric is on about in terms of the NO covers bit (I have always found Stipe's lyrics pretty obtuse), but Peter Buck is a known fan of YMG, and Stipe does drop band names into his lyrics ("Sun Electric - outtasite" from Electrolite). If they criticised Hague's production methods and their approach, I would have to agree with them, his attempts at producing guitar-based music has had anaemic results (except Regret, but I think he was helped out a bit on that one). In terms of what they have in common - Scott Litt did Run2, Don Gehman did the Permanent mix of LWTUA, Jacknife Lee did a nice mix of WFTSC, both Barney and Stipe have used autocues and the bridge in 'Imitation of Life' and '60MPH' is exactly the same (have a listen) CTB
