Excellent piece, many thanks for sharing. Anybody else pick up on Savilles less than glowing analysis of Total?
I also like how the recession left him 'skint' and yet he could afford to go from Minnesota to spending a month in California. Times must have been tough...

The photographer Trevor Key who worked with Peter Saville died in 1995 from a brain tumour.
Trevor Key was well known in the design community for his ability to photograph metal objects, and created work for many album covers. He is most associated with Peter Saville and Factory Records.
Key photographed and designed covers for a variety of artists and bands, including Mike Oldfield (the famous bell*), Joy Division, the Sex Pistols, Phil Collins, Roxy Music, Wham!, Can, China Crisis, System 7, OMD, and many New Order covers.
Trevor Key was born in 1948 and died in 1995.

His stand out comment with respect to Total:
"So the cover has a ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ aesthetic."
As does the album in general...
Good read, though I always thought the eagle on Retro was stuffed... its more interesting that it was an actual living bird..
