http://menmedia.co.uk/tv_and_showbiz/s/1423329_bernard-sumner-rules-out-a-new-order-reunion

With the release of a new greatest hits collection, fans might hope a New Order reunion is edging a little Closer.

But, alas, after The Diary caught up with frontman Bernard Sumner at a signing event for the new Joy Division and New Order hits album, it sounds like a reconciliation with bassist Peter Hook is more unlikely than ever.

The new CD, which is called Total: From Joy Division To New Order, is the first time the hits of both bands have been released together.

And it has been down to the bands’ former members – Bernard, Hooky and drummer Stephen Morris – to divvy up publicity around the new album.

Not the easiest when New Order ceased working together in 2007.

But the issue of the “split” itself remains raw.

Bernard said: “New Order haven’t disbanded, Peter Hook left.

“I still work with Steve, but I don’t work with Peter.”

He adds: “I can’t see me working with Peter ever again.”

But it would be a shame for the band not to come together at some point again, wouldn’t it?

“It’s a shame, let’s leave it at that,” Bernard says firmly.

Ah well, at least there’s plenty in the pipeline for Sumner and Morris’s new band, Bad Lieutenant.

Bernard confirms he and Steve are halfway through recording a new Bad Lieutenant album, which should be ready by Christmas, and that he’s also working with producer Stuart Price on another new music project.

With Bernard heading to the fan signing of the new album at HMV on Market Street this week, I ask how did the new hits compilation come about?

He laughed: “The story I’m putting out is that it shows that both music came from the same band really, but of course the real reason is the record company want to sell a few more records!

“It’s the first time we’ve done it though, having Joy Division and New Order songs together, and it does make for a great album.”

Strangely, though, Bernard says he’s not one for “looking back” or “nostalgia”.

He says: “I don’t really like poring over the past, I’m a forward-looking person.

“That’s why I’m writing new material.

“But, of course, I’m very proud of our achievements and the great songs that we’ve written that have taken us all around the world.

“I’m also really proud we stayed in Manchester, it’s our hometown.”

However, he reckons he may well pen his memoirs before too long.

He smiles: “I’ll write a book one day, just to get the facts straight. But I’ll publish it after my death.”

Oh, but where’s the fun in that?

Ok, the relationship between Barney and Hooky is broken.

There is nothing more to say.

I've no doubt that this has been covered already but can anybody tell a nosey twat (me) the specifc issue around which Hooky and Bernard have fallen out? Or it numerous issues? Or a slow build up of tension? Or fuck off and mind my own business.........

It's because Hooky nicked his chocolate digestive biscuits and tried to pacify him with custard creams. Barney went mad. Steve said "look, I've got these ginger nuts we can all share" but that just made it worse. Phil was sobbing in the corner the whole time "This is Marion all over again".

Seriously, the break came right after the did the Control stuff. they were getting along great and then Hooky was tossing out the idea of them playing as Joy Division because they felt so inspired doing the Control stuff. My bet: he probably pushed that idea hard to Barney. That's pissed barney off who is not into the looking backward stuff. then Hooky probably said, look we made history but we didn't make money (you can buy one of his t-shirts with that saying now) we got to take advantage now. Barney said no friggin' way am I recording/touring as Joy Division. Hooky said I want/need to make the money before piracy and aging fans take the money off the table. SO if you;re not going to do it, I'm out. He probably was hoping Barney would say wait, but Barney probably said don't let the door hit you on the way out. That's all speculation, but I'd feel pretty confident that's basically what happened.

Bernard is a very private person. He would never intend to sell his soul to the devil on the music business. Hooky loves touring and I admire him for that. But the last New Order years were awful, same setlist for ages. Think it was Bernard who pressured for that. If they come back together again one day I wish Gillian could join them too.

Craig Gill (Inspiral Carpets) was telling me last January that the split between Barney and Hooky is over percentage royalties where the name New Order is used.

Hooky wants an even split, Barney feels Hooky's contribution is far from equal to the other members of the group, as he (Barney) and Steve did most of the writing and recording for New Order. Hooky is livid about this, because (in Craig's words) "Hooky's gone copyright and money mad these days".

Another quote from Craig "Hooky will tell you he owns the copyright on yellow stripes"

I don't think what hes asking is unreasonable though. Without him, New Order would simply not be New Order. His bass is an extremely important part of the sound.

That its even come to that shows how equal the blame should be split, never mind the fucking money.

Shock horror. Band members fall out over money. You never hear of that do you? Seriously though, I think it's been widely known for years that the split was most likely about the filthy lucre. People didn't really think it was about Bernard being pissed off with the way Hooky eats crisps did they?

If I were in a band and wrote the lion's share of the music, produced, recorded it etc. I'm pretty sure I would want an appropriate slice of the royalties to reflect that. So would everyone else here probably. The problem for us fans is we have no idea how much input either Bernard, Stephen or Hooky had in the creation of the later New Order material so it's impossible to comment.

No but if these things werent an issue Back In The Day then its a pity it ends up as a falling out later.

Does make you (me) wonder whether this was an issue Back In The Day but Rob Gretton just handled it better and that since his passing nobody has been able to manage it.

Would somewhat make sense but how comes they only fell out in '06 and not a long time before? And why would the distribution of royalties suddenly change after all that time? I'm for one less and less inclined to give them anything anymore anyway :nonono: .

That occurred to me too, but really if you look at most of what they have done since Technique, Hooky's bass has seemed 'tacked on' in at least 50% of songs.

Even on the last record which is very guitar-based, he plays *nothing* on Jetstream except one just line at the very start, which is copied and pasted in the mix about 3 minutes later, and then that's it. I think it's very unlikely songs like "I Told You So" or "Guilt is a Useless Emotion" involved Hooky at all in the writing process. When they play True Faith live, hooky plays four or five notes, dances around for 30 seconds, plays the same four or five notes again.... Even as far back as Republic you can hear it happening on tracks like World etc.

I mean don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the guy, loved his recent Unknown Pleasures gigs, but I can see clearly where the argument Craig provided fits, or could fit. He seemed quite certain of it. Perhaps it was brewing for some time and came to a head during the 06 tour - who knows. Perhaps they spoke of new material in late 2006 to co-incide with Control and Bernard put his foot down on royalty percentage, and Hooky walked - again who knows?

The songs from WFTSC which don't feature Hooky are also coincidently the weakest songs on that album. I suspect Hooky was sidelined by the fact that Bernard and Steve were more into using the technology that was evolving from the mid 80's onwards, perhaps Hooky was happiest when the band went in to their rehearsal space and jammed as a band like in the Joy Division days, clearly that didn't happen on Republic but that doesn't mean that there were no Hooky basslines on Republic or that he didn't put work into it but possibly his input on most songs didn't make the final mix. My point being that his lessening involvement as time went on may not have been by choice on his part.

Think you've hit the nail on the head.

If Craig is right, I'm with Hooky on this one.

I don't think it's as straightforward as Hooky being side-lined since Republic as his bass is all over Get Ready. There is more Hooky bass on tracks like Crystal, 60 MPH and Primitive Notion than possibly ever before. Shoved right to the front of the mix as well so he was clearly heavily involved in the song writing and final mix decisions there.

By comparison I agree that WFTSC lacks his sound a bit. To me it sounds like Bernard (and Steve) wrote most of the music then Hooky came in later and riffed over the top of what they'd done. This may not be true (I have no idea who wrote what) but it does sound plausible. Particularly on 'Jetstream' as has been noted; Hooky stated in interview around the time that he wasn't massively keen on that single. I agree with him too - Bernard was in full-on collaboration mode (as he had been with Electronic) but it didn't quite work under the New Order banner in my opinion.

I remember buying the single on the day and it didn't feel right buying a New Order 12" record with a "Featuring Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters" sticker on the front. Meh.

As for Hellbent; there really is sod all Hooky bass on that.

You're forgetting Phil, he has been an active writing part of NO for the last two albums.

And also that the lack of bass doesn't necessarily mean that Hooky didn't have more of an input into the songwriting...

(I dunno, but it is possible that he could have had a hand in writing other parts of songs?)

:smoking:

I'd always assumed it was an equal split, even though it is obvious than Barney was the main musical force and 'songwriter'. Hookys basslines were sounded a bit cliched and maybe he needed to be more adaptable musically speaking.

This is a situation that never should of happened. Any band should credit each track to who wrote the song. I've never believed in a blanket band credit as almost no songs are written like that. It's a disaster waiting to happen. Usually bands do this in their very early days and then change to individual credits as things get more serious.

Debbie Curtis always believed that Ian should of had 50% of the royalties as he wrote all the lyrics, but Ian was never bothered about it.

johnny james wrote: You're forgetting Phil, he has been an active writing part of NO for the last two albums.

I always thought Phil came on the NO scene post Get Ready, and although involved in the touring, didnt feature in the recording of a NO until WFTSC. So does he only receive royalties post 2005 output?

I have no idea of the bands split concerning royalties. I mean Gillian effectly left the band in 2001, so does she only receive fees from previously recorded output? Does Hooky get paid per bassline? More subcontractor than Subculture.

It sounds a complete nightmare from an accounting point of view and its typically ironic of the band to squabble in later years over money when they happily squandared so much on Hacienda back in the day. Perhaps they realised (Too Late) that Every Penny Counts!

The division of royalties recorded for publishing is somewhat different to the reality for each track on each album. The royalty split is a business decision, rather than a reflection of what really happened each time.

Whatever the case, I just hope their current projects don't go wrong because of money/royalty issues...it's always a possibilty, but it'll be sad if that were to happen.

I might be talking utter bollocks here as I can't remember where I heard any of this information, but just here me out and let me know if any of this is complete rubbish!

As far as I am aware until the collapse of Factory and the Republic era all NO royalties were divided equally amongst the band (and maybe Rob Gretton?) and all the music was credited to just 'New Order'. I think Bernard called it 'a very communist system'. But then with the collapse of factory they had to renegotiate the royalties with London Records and I think Bernard and Steve pushed for greater royalties because they felt Hooky didn't contribute to the same extent that they did (witness all the rumours about Hooky sunbathing while Barney was in the studio with Stephen Hague recording Republic). I think they may have got their wish and this certainly would have created tensions in the studio and so perhaps might have contributed to the breakup in '93. However by '06 they'd been working together for 8 years again and been through a reunion, so whatever difficulties there had been over royalties would surely be long in the past, having worked together under the new arrangement for 13 years.

So, in short, whilst royalties may have been a contributing factor to the split in 1993, I don't think they were much of an issue by 2006. So something else was at work- perhaps just a complete breakdown in relations between Hooky and Bernard/Steve

Barney is paid per note sung in tune. That's why he lives in a luggage locker in Stockport station. Hooky is paid per killer riff, that's why his house has 7 bathrooms (including one with a cinema screen and self-serve ice cream bar). Gillian and Steve take no royalties, having made their money inventing the non-wearing gusset. Phil doesn't actually exist - he's just an amalgamation of corporate logos.

So, in summary the cause is jealousy.

Not everyone is that thrilled about the prospect of a new all guitar BL album, but at least it is new music, maybe if Bernard did roughly half the new album with his guitar buddies and the other half with Stuart Price and call it the new Electronic album instead...

Of course they'll play together again.... you know those memory erasing gadgets they use in Men In Black? Well, I've bought one on eBay and I'm gonna use it on Barney and Hooky so they forget there ever was a feud.

I need to be careful not to erase all NO's bad memories though, otherwise they'll probably end up buying a nightclub again.

Then I'm gonna get Derren Brown to do a bit of hypnosis on Bernard to help him with his weight problem and overcome his pathological fear of touring. Perhaps Derren can also teach Bernard some of his memory techniques, so he doesn't need to sing off the autocue (mind you, I always enjoy seeing footage of Bernard improvising lyrics).

Jobs a good 'un. Sorted. New album and a tour by 2012.

Shite idea. As JJ points out Electronic was always Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr. Honestly, I'd rather see a "proper" fourth Electronic album (as unlikely as it would be right now) rather than more Bad Loot shenanigans. Twisted Tenderness was the last truly decent side project effort in terms of pushing forward new music with an edge.

Sadly, I think from various interviews over the past few years from both Marr and Bernard it seems that Electronic has been "put to bed" permanently. Albeit on amicable terms as they're still friends.

I rather enjoyed Never Cry Another Tear, well at least most of it. Especially, Twist of Fate, This Is Home, Running Out of Luck, Runaway, Falling Trees, and Splitting the Atom. I thought it was better than WFTSC overall. To each their own I suppose

But yeah, it's no Twisted Tenderness. That album is great start to finish IMHO.

For me the Electronic debut album stands head and shoulders above any other NO side project material,I remember that when it first came out it was a real breath of fresh air,I presume that the Electronic project fizzled out because of disappointing records sales and that was before the era of illegal downloads ever began, that is just my hunch by the way.

It was certainly pretty slick and consistant, a real statement of intent.

Best Side Project Single, for me, would be What Do You Want From Me? Blistering. When The Shirehorses did it I loved it more.

The debut LP sold every well, did it not? Top 5 at least - back when such things mattered. The mistake was then twofold: (i) leaving it five years before the follow-up, and (ii) filling said follow-up with a bunch of half-arsed shite that sounded for the most part like fucking Technotronic b-sides. Only not as good.

There's a lesson in there somewhere. ;)

The mistake was one-fold: bothering to record anything after that first album.

Yerse I agree. What a pile of poo RTP was, cetainly in the wake of the so-hip-it-hurt début. To be honest I think the 'activity' at the mo is just a way of creating interest for 'Total', I'm sure a reunion is an abyss away. Their comments are always nutsy, especially Barney's, e.g.: (post-'Twisted Tenderness') I'm definitely going to work with Johnny again! (11 years on...?) (circa 'Republic', to Melody Maker's Paul Lester) 'New Order like pushing themselves' - To the limit, yeah! [...] 'Couldn't New Order have been more successful? They seem to have let lesser bands steal their thunder' - Yeah but then you gotta work really fucking hard, and I ain't prepared to do that.' (Radio 1, 'Forbidden City') 'What's the future for New Order?' I have absolutely no plans to work with New Order ever again. [2 years pre-reunion] - 'So NO have split up?' I can honestly categorically state that New Order have not split up. Make your own mind up. ()

Agree Jack - you will know more than anyone who posts on here. From my observations money is not an issue, Bernard, Hooky and Steve all have nice houses and cars (or tanks in Steves case) Talking to people I am led to beleive the issues are around life styles. Hooky likes his full on (without booze nowadays) and Bernard likes a more sedate pace of life (with Booze). So that a problem!

Hooky wants an even split, Barney feels Hooky's contribution is far from equal to the other members of the group, as he (Barney) and Steve did most of the writing and recording for New Order. Hooky is livid about this, because (in Craig's words) "Hooky's gone copyright and money mad these days".

Another quote from Craig "Hooky will tell you he owns the copyright on yellow stripes"

that's total rubbish

I actually preferred Monaco's debut album to Electronic's.

That was Hooky's finest hour in my view..

Part 1 of the interview on that site: http://www.tonedeaf.com.au/features/interviews/79692/new-order-heaven-knows-its-got-to-be-this-time.htm

Part 2 will be available on Monday and according to the site...

Check back on Monday for Part Two of this epic interview where Sumner discusses the legacy of New Order, his bitter fallout with Peter Hook and why it means New Order will never reform.

Interesting read... At least it wasn't dominated by tales of petty squabbling... Or maybe that'll be in part two...

I think I've missed a news update somewhere. Whats Bernard working on 'in a studio' before completing the next Bad Loo album?

It's just so unfortunate really. Kinda makes you think that this is what inevitably happens in bands the longer you carry on........

It may be total rubbish that Craig spoke, but the fact that he described this to me is not rubbish, as he most certainly did, following a few cynical comments about Hooky's DJ-ing.

Just to clarify :-)

From what has been posted here over the last year he was meant to be making a BL album and one with Stuart Price but then it seemed that the latter project was shelved and if I am not imagining it (or making it up!) Bernard was working on a BL album which would also feature contributions from Stuart Price but another recent poster who seems to be in the know reckons there will be two albums. According to the Stuart Price Wiki the collaboration with Bernard has been shelved so that probably means it will go ahead. There is also photographic evidence of BL in the studio working on stuff.. :confused2:

Er. Thanks.

Anybody else think Stuart Price is incredibly over-rated btw?

I know it was shelved. But I'm pretty sure Bernard mentioned it again in an interview he's done for Total. But my impression was Price was brought in to do some work on the new BL album - so maybe they're just picking up the earlier with with Price rather than dropping it?

I'm quite sure it wasn't shelved, you don't ditch work with an expensive producer such as Stuart Price. It just isn't finished.

Deffo over-rated. Funniest thing i saw was during a recent Formula 1 gridwalk, when Martin Brundle went up to him and started asking him questions. Brundle thought he was talking to actor Adrien Brody!!! When Stuart Price pointed out that he was actually Stuart Price, Brundle ended up walking off muttering about how he didn't know who that fella was..... I was p!ssing myself laughing.

I don't think I really know what these producers look like. Some people might say he is overrated...but it still seems that more than a few people have worked with him, so I don't really mind.

He's produced some brilliant stuff, though it all depends on what you really want from a producer.

Wouldn't say he is over rated but his work on WFTSC was not that amazing.Jetstream wasn't a career highlight for him.

Some might say he was only working with the material he was given though. I say that as a New Order fan too. Sometimes you just can't polish a turd no matter how much of a super-producer you are. Mind you it took both Price and Richard X hammering away at that song to turn it into something half decent (the latter's remix is great). But by the end it just didn't seem like a "New Order song"; it seemed like Bernard collaborating with a couple of hip young super producers which didn't fit well on an album under the NO banner. In my opinion, anyway.

That said, 'Guilt Is A Useless Emotion' is a pretty well produced electronic track; done in a similar vein to what he did with Madonna's material around that time which also did pretty well in the charts. The band were also nominated for a Grammy award in 2006 for the solid batch of Guilt remixes? He clearly has the Midas Touch sometimes.
