With the release of a new greatest hits collection, fans might hope a New Order reunion is edging a little Closer.

But, alas, after The Diary caught up with frontman Bernard Sumner at a signing event for the new Joy Division and New Order hits album, it sounds like a reconciliation with bassist Peter Hook is more unlikely than ever.

The new CD, which is called Total: From Joy Division To New Order, is the first time the hits of both bands have been released together.

And it has been down to the bands’ former members – Bernard, Hooky and drummer Stephen Morris – to divvy up publicity around the new album.

Not the easiest when New Order ceased working together in 2007.

But the issue of the “split” itself remains raw.

Bernard said: “New Order haven’t disbanded, Peter Hook left.

“I still work with Steve, but I don’t work with Peter.”

He adds: “I can’t see me working with Peter ever again.”

But it would be a shame for the band not to come together at some point again, wouldn’t it?

“It’s a shame, let’s leave it at that,” Bernard says firmly.

Ah well, at least there’s plenty in the pipeline for Sumner and Morris’s new band, Bad Lieutenant.

Bernard confirms he and Steve are halfway through recording a new Bad Lieutenant album, which should be ready by Christmas, and that he’s also working with producer Stuart Price on another new music project.

With Bernard heading to the fan signing of the new album at HMV on Market Street this week, I ask how did the new hits compilation come about?

He laughed: “The story I’m putting out is that it shows that both music came from the same band really, but of course the real reason is the record company want to sell a few more records!

“It’s the first time we’ve done it though, having Joy Division and New Order songs together, and it does make for a great album.”

Strangely, though, Bernard says he’s not one for “looking back” or “nostalgia”.

He says: “I don’t really like poring over the past, I’m a forward-looking person.

“That’s why I’m writing new material.

“But, of course, I’m very proud of our achievements and the great songs that we’ve written that have taken us all around the world.

“I’m also really proud we stayed in Manchester, it’s our hometown.”

However, he reckons he may well pen his memoirs before too long.

He smiles: “I’ll write a book one day, just to get the facts straight. But I’ll publish it after my death.”

Oh, but where’s the fun in that?

Ok, the relationship between Barney and Hooky is broken.

There is nothing more to say.

I've no doubt that this has been covered already but can anybody tell a nosey twat (me) the specifc issue around which Hooky and Bernard have fallen out? Or it numerous issues? Or a slow build up of tension? Or fuck off and mind my own business.........

It's because Hooky nicked his chocolate digestive biscuits and tried to pacify him with custard creams. Barney went mad. Steve said "look, I've got these ginger nuts we can all share" but that just made it worse. Phil was sobbing in the corner the whole time "This is Marion all over again".

Write those memos soon, eh? Maybe you can give the whoops and stage antics yet another outlet.

Seriously, the break came right after the did the Control stuff. they were getting along great and then Hooky was tossing out the idea of them playing as Joy Division because they felt so inspired doing the Control stuff. My bet: he probably pushed that idea hard to Barney. That's pissed barney off who is not into the looking backward stuff. then Hooky probably said, look we made history but we didn't make money (you can buy one of his t-shirts with that saying now) we got to take advantage now. Barney said no friggin' way am I recording/touring as Joy Division. Hooky said I want/need to make the money before piracy and aging fans take the money off the table. SO if you;re not going to do it, I'm out. He probably was hoping Barney would say wait, but Barney probably said don't let the door hit you on the way out. That's all speculation, but I'd feel pretty confident that's basically what happened.

Bernard is a very private person. He would never intend to sell his soul to the devil on the music business. Hooky loves touring and I admire him for that. But the last New Order years were awful, same setlist for ages. Think it was Bernard who pressured for that. If they come back together again one day I wish Gillian could join them too.

Craig Gill (Inspiral Carpets) was telling me last January that the split between Barney and Hooky is over percentage royalties where the name New Order is used.

Hooky wants an even split, Barney feels Hooky's contribution is far from equal to the other members of the group, as he (Barney) and Steve did most of the writing and recording for New Order. Hooky is livid about this, because (in Craig's words) "Hooky's gone copyright and money mad these days".

Another quote from Craig "Hooky will tell you he owns the copyright on yellow stripes"

*Insert incredibly easy swipe at hooky here references to his live work, Fac251 etc*

I don't think what hes asking is unreasonable though. Without him, New Order would simply not be New Order. His bass is an extremely important part of the sound.

That its even come to that shows how equal the blame should be split, never mind the fucking money.

Shock horror. Band members fall out over money. You never hear of that do you? Seriously though, I think it's been widely known for years that the split was most likely about the filthy lucre. People didn't really think it was about Bernard being pissed off with the way Hooky eats crisps did they?

If I were in a band and wrote the lion's share of the music, produced, recorded it etc. I'm pretty sure I would want an appropriate slice of the royalties to reflect that. So would everyone else here probably. The problem for us fans is we have no idea how much input either Bernard, Stephen or Hooky had in the creation of the later New Order material so it's impossible to comment.

No but if these things werent an issue Back In The Day then its a pity it ends up as a falling out later.

Does make you (me) wonder whether this was an issue Back In The Day but Rob Gretton just handled it better and that since his passing nobody has been able to manage it.
