I was rushing out the house today and grabbed Get Ready as my in-car entertainment. Fuck me there's some utter shite on there.

Rock The Shack Slow Jam Primitive Notion Someone Like You

All of the above are bordering on the unlistenable. We must've all been caught up in the euphoria of having something new from them as I remember the album as being 'above average'. Although I think we all agreed on this very board at the time of release that Rock The Shack was possibly the worst thing they'd ever done. Anyway, it'll be another 4/5 years before I give it another spin that's for sure.

I'm gonna put WFTSC on tomorrow which I remember as being 'pretty shite' so that'll be an interesting experiment.

I really enjoyed Someone Like You. The production and mixing is excellent, I personally think apart from Crystal, 60mph and Vicious Streak its the best song on there.

I disagree! Lyrically, sure, its piss poor in a lot of places, but aren't all New Order albums?

As for the music I think Get Ready is one of their stronger albums. Crystal, on its own, its one of the best New Order songs ever recorded, up there with Blue Monday, Regret and True Faith.

Even today, it still sounds modern and fresh. The album does have its weak moments for sure, RTS definitely, but the tracks flow really well, it's a better crafted album than say, PCL, Brotherhood or Republic.

The strong tracks outnumber the weak though, in fact I would say that Rock The Shack and Slow Jam are the only two weak numbers on there. The rest are very strong songs.

Up there with Technique as my favourite New Order album.

All the songs are great musically, it's just the lyrics that cheese things up at times.

This album can work very well, with three minor tweaks.

  1. Insert "Here To Stay" full length between Crystal and 60MPH as track 2

  2. Replace "Rock the Shack" with "Brutal"

  3. Replace the LP Mix of "Run Wild" with the longer version.

For that matter, I'd include Behind Close Doors and maybe Player in the League. It's the only NO album I'd like to see re-edited. Which, in fact, I did anyway on my laptop and on CD-R I made for my car.

The first half of GR is great (except 60mph, don't enjoy that), then it goes downhill. Like LowLife which I think is a criminally over-rated LP: side one's class, then side two is turgid (Elegaia), average (STYT), about wanking (Subculture), unlistenable (FU, strange coincidence in initials).

Get Ready is just really, REALLY uneven, and as I don't care for the 'rawky' NO stuff, I dislike a handful of the tracks on there. But we got Crystal out of the deal, so I think it's a fair trade.

Here's how I listen to GR:

  1. Crystal

  2. 60 MPH, even though it's corny

SKIP Turn My Way (God, I like Smashing Pumpkins okay, but Corgan's voice is unbearable here. And the opener reminds me of Flight of the Conchords' "Bowie," but without the humor.)

  1. Vicious Streak (crap lyrics-- 'you're like a solar flare in the rising sun'?-- but synthy.)

SKIP PN, SJ, RTS-- :bag:

8-9. SLY, CR-- just okay, and Barney lecturing anybody about excessive substance abuse is hilarious

I can't stand the female vocals on the "Crystal" intro... sounds like a bad joke that isn't funny. Scary to think that they maybe thought it was cool. "Crystal" is good after that, even if too long. I think people tend to exaggerate it as a "hard rocker".

"Rock the Shack" is a horrible piss-take, or maybe they were just pissed. Is it supposed to be funny? Or an incredibly bad Stooges homage?

"Run Wild" is just cringe worthy. Half baked with inappropriate female vocals which sound like a joke on what seems like a personal song by Bernard. Wishy washy religious sentiment which sounds like from an American.

I always liked the Joy Divison homage of "Primitive Notion", they are allowed. Song is edited too long thou.

Like the B sides and the other songs okay, though many should have been edited shorter.

yeah, I made my own mix of b-sides stuck in for the "weaker" tracks and it workks for me. So...:nod:

Love the whole album except for Turn My Way, which starts off alright but becomes unlistenable with the first appearance of that godawful whining voice courtesy of Mr Corgan.

The absolute worst part about "Get Ready" is that even the strongest tracks meander on pointlessly for several minute after the last verse.

It's a pre-release version of Run Wild, with several differences from the album version, most notably the intro

Get Ready isn't a good album. It's the worst album they've ever made. Period.

'Crystal' is great, though a tad overated, and one or two of the other tracks are reasonable, but 'Side 2' in particular, is trite. There is NO production on this record. Hannett would be spinning in his grave if he heard what little effort had been made in that department. It's a non rock and roll band, making a 'live' rock and roll record and it on the whole DOES NOT WORK. It's like a jam session for old musicians and a lot of wanking around.

'Rock The Shack' is appalling, dated, car crash of a record. How that made the final cut I have no idea, but it showed that the band had partially at least, lost it. Barney always banged on about 'Looking for the perfect beat', but there is no perfection here.

Anyway.

Glas's thread here is quite timely for me as I prepared a USB stick to play in the car in a hurry and put on Low Life, GR and Never Cry Another Tear. Can only concur that Get Ready is a bit poo.

One difference that struck me is that GR starts with a long, fanfare-like introduction whereas Low Life effectively starts with a quick smack on a snare drum. I feel sure there is a lesson there.

Get Ready has got some terrible lyrics, and also some very good ones.

This morning's favourite was "I spent a day by myself, a rich man without his wealth", which I liked.

The "finished" album they put out in the shops is a bit shit really.

The Get Ready you can compile yourself with all the promos, CD singles, Here To Stay etc. laid out in front of you can be a great album. How a track like Sabotage was consigned to a b side but the Rock The bleedin' Shack made it to the final cut we'll never know.

On RTS we have the musicians who at various points in their respective careers created Unknown Pleasures, Closer, Low-life, Screamadelica and XTRMNTR but the best they could come up with was a half-baked Stooges pastiche that would probably have been rejected by the Stooges themselves. Seriously, all that legendary talent in the studio and that was the best they could manage? Misguided is probably the most positive way you could describe it.

Turn My Way works much better without Corgan as well, god knows why they felt the need to paste him into the mix. That just smacked of "hey our showbiz mate just dropped by the studio" which is not what we should normally get from New Order. They continued it with Ana Matronic on Jetstream. Somebody should have been telling them to stop inviting their mates onto the records. That's what Electronic (and latterly) Freebass were for. NOT New Order.

All that said, the high points are high... Crystal's legendary, Turn My Way (minus Corgan) is just a great tune and stuff like Vicious Streak and Primitive Notion pack a punch too. Once you start removing the dross and adding Here To Stay, Sabotage etc. in there it starts going from a mediocre album to a really good one.

Well in the old days, albums (or LPs) would flow with a side A and a side B. It's not unheard of. I did it in the old stylee. Each side starts with a strongish track and ends with a mellow one. Or something.

Sticking up a 15 track playlist that fills 80 minutes isn't really an album to me. It has to flow and if it ends at 50 minutes then so be it.

Seems like a lifetime since Ive thought "That sides better than the other side".

As you say, albums are just a big block of music these days. Its no wonder the yoof prefer to cherry pick downloadable mp3s. And Im as guilty of that as the yoof, too. I cant remember the last time I listened to an album from start to finish (in the right order).

I'll be buying the new Pop Will Eat Itself (on CD) in October and perhaps that'll end up in my car CD player but after that it'll end up all digital on the ipod forever to be listened to only when the Gods of Shuffle decide.

"Get Ready" is their very best of the "late albums". At last it turned me into a REAL fan - which led me here. I don't know if that's a blessing but it's a fact... :crazy:

I think Crystals' crap but I know I'm on my own with that one. Shit album but not without it's moments.

60mph is good. It was the first thing I ever illegally downloaded off the internet when it appeared a good few months before the album came out. It was brilliant to hear that bass and those vocals again. Still rate it today in a 'it's not bad' kind of way. Close Range is also decent and I like Turn My Way, I think Corgan brings something to it. The rest, as I mentioned, is rotten.

Haven't yet got round to re-listening to WFTSC. Remembered as I was looking for it that I never actually went out and bought it as I was so unimpressed. Will need to burn a CD from iTunes. Surely it can't be as bad as GR??? From what I can recall WFTSC (the song) and Turn are two really good tracks which is two more 'really' good tracks than GR has for starters.
