Its official, Hooky said that he will be doing a Movement tour, I asked him last night while he was signing at Amoeba records. He didn't give a specific detail but he said that he will be definitely doing it. Hopefully after the closer tour!!!:D

Yeah, after 'the 'Still' tour, and maybe even the 'Substance' tour.

Then maybe a 'Permanent' tour and a 'Les Bains Douche' tour. Seriously the 'PCL' tour should be interesting. Hooky with vocoder during Ecstasy will be quite entertaining.

I kind of understand him doing the JD stuff but Movement?! I really don't think its a good idea.

In fairness, I'd go.

If they can be arsed to play London that is.

At the Factory show in may he said 'see you next year'. Movement was always on the cards. This will be great. Hearing Movement live will be a first for me as a fan starting from 1987 onwards. Bring it on... Bring on the JD and NO books and all the NO albums performed live. The other 3 will never do it, rightly or wrongly, so go Hooky!

Someone have a word with him. At least wait til the singers dead.

This is the only way to hear these songs anyway as Bernard is hardly likely to dust off any songs from Movement for any future gigs, and surely they will perform other tracks from 81-82 to fill out the set..

Is it more acceptable to do New Order stuff than Joy Division stuff? What does the class think?

Gene wrote: Is it more acceptable to do New Order stuff than Joy Division stuff? What does the class think?

First, I didn't like the Movement idea. I accepted the Joy Division thing, because, well technically anyone is free to cover them (Curtis's dead and logically cannot perform it anyway). But with New Order stuff - there's a whole band still alive that could play all those tunes!!!

Having said that, I'm also aware that Bernard would never play dark obscure tracks from 1981-83 (heck, he's not even playing Low-life or Technique tracks!). So the question is: leave these tracks in obscurity, or have them performed by an original member (who at least in this case sang TWO songs originally). So I think I would go to a Movement gig only to hear the superb sound of a live performance and for its sentimental value (Hooky's involvement).

And yet, I still cannot afford even to go to see The Light's current tour, freaking hell... :banghead:

All I can say is that I'm not interested. If he wants to do it, then I do not care much. But it seems he's a busy man. He's still touring JD, he said in interviews he's writing a JD book and that later he is planning to write a New Order book, now more plans for touring etc....

Apart from Love Vigilantes, of course.

EDIT: Or are you specifically talking about Bad Lieutenant, in which case they only play the 'singles' anyway.

New Order. I didn't expect much NO material from Bad Lieutenant: they had FOUR bands to cover, to begin with.

What's he going to say about Bernard's lyrics when journalists ask him? I mean, how can he really feel there's any integrity in taking on Bernard's vocals when there's such antagonism between the two of them?

There's another way to look at that: Movement was made when Bernard's style was heavily influenced by that of Curtis; Bernard himself was trying to find his own voice at the time. So... it's not like Hooky is going to sing Bizarre Love Triangle, or is he?

Hooky, I love you. Please stop.

Movement is a great album but not my favorite Hannett's production indeed. Read Hooky saying that NO didn't play DNE anymore cause of Bernard. Then I wondered, "Why? He's not singing on it?".

He's probably going to tour every single NO album one by one at this rate.....

We'll always love you Hooky, but sometimes......just sometimes......

I feel like Hooky has said that about so many songs. But they played DNE A LOT until 87. While a great tune, it's not the most interesting from a guitar player's perspective. It also has junior partner status to Ceremony, much like Face Up does to Temptation.

Hooky reads these pages?

FOR GOD'S SAKE, STOP IT.

You're worth more than becoming a museum to yourself. Go out and do a "Best of Hooky" tour with Revenge, Monaco, Freebass, New Order, Joy Division material : sure. Fine. Do that.

But if you have to tour an album in full, can you please tour "One True Passion"?

Well, The Light have already done a pretty good Dreams Never End at the FAC251 opening night, and I must say it would be better if he just did a set based on all HIS best stuff like Monaco, Revenge, DNE, DEH etc, alongside something new.

However, I guess anything new is unlikely since he seems to have run out of steam creatively, preferring to re-live the past instead.

Probably wise for Hooky to just stop at "Ceremony" and the Joy Division tribute and be happy. Leave the New Order tribute to Bernard.

After this why not just tour whenever he feels like it with The Light and play whatever they feel like playing? Some Joy Division, pick a few New Order songs, a few Monaco, play Louie Louie or some Stooges or Pistols or whatever. Invite guests to play along. Have fun without the NO or JD implied label.

If I were Hooky I would bury New order. Joy Division is much better indeed!

Now that's the right approach. I wholly agree with it! It makes no sense to me, why Hooky didn't revive Monaco in 2007. They were fucking great!!! And he could tour now playing Monaco, Revenge, JD and NO tunes, just like Bad Loo did - NO ONE would bitch.

It's sad Hooky gave up on new material because of internet piracy concerns... But so many young bands keep putting out new music no matter what nowadays...

Piracy concerns? Bullshit. Write new songs. Play them live. Set up a rehearsal studio and a tape. Go. Release a new "live in the studio" album - recorded dirt cheap, and on a smallish label. Use that to promote live shows. Tour yer arse off.

if piracy conerns were such a worry, the "Hooky Plays Unknown Pleasures And Some B Sides LIVE!" would never have come out, surely. After all, loads of Light gigs are free on the interwebs.

I'm curious to know how much money you think a limited edition live album, and download only ep release, would derive?

Actually, it's a good point - I don't buy the piracy concerns argument either. Hooky loves to tour, and recording is as inexpensive now as it ever has been. OK, so he may not recoup a huge return from sales of a recording of new material, but if it is good material, he could surely tour like a man possessed (as he likes it) and make a healthy living. Also, he wouldn't need to share any royalties with his 'bitterest of sworn enemies'.

Question is, can he pull it off to do something new that is worthy? Touring endlessly on the back of JD covers seems a pretty safe option in this context...

My guess is the live album has made, in terms of profit, less than £5,000.

My point was

a)Record New Stuff and sell cheaply b)Tour it with a greatest hits set profusely for 18 months c)Make a modest living touring with some minor LP profit.

I don't buy download only content. Music is something you feel.

Hooky did write new stuff, or at least a band did. He choose not to try to tour Freebass, but went with the nostalgia tour. Did anyone think the Freebass album would have been worth promoting, epecially after sitting on the shelf for so long? Who actually listened to the Freebass album all the way through?

I would definitley love to hear "Movement"! I have really enjoyed both the 'Unknown Pleasures" and "Closer" shows... :)

Movement is actually the ONLY New Order album I would really LOVE to hear completely rerecorded in a 2011 version (exactly 30 years on). I'd love to imagine what an updated version of this forgotten low key classic would sound like, seriously.

There is potential for something to be redeemed from what is actually a half-baked album which has its strengths but also a lot of weaknesses (the snow-blindness white fog production of Martin Hannett's of course being the main set back)...

If I had one wish from New Order, despite all the adversity, this would be what I would ask for!

:)

Buzzcocks have done something similar, where they have re recorded all their well known songs, it sounds fantastic as I reckon Movement would.

I really don't agree at all. I think the production is fantastic, despite the fact that the favoured opinion on here is contrary to this.

A re-recording this album now would be irredeemably shite, whoever does it.

I was also at the signing and asked Hooky the same thing, and received the same answer, however there was a bit of hesitation in the answer. It sounded more like a desire, but not sure if would or could do it?

You can thank me though, Hooky was there cause it was my birthday! :baby:

Regardless of whether he's going to do it, he seems to want to tour albums and such. This is from page 2 of this article, and it's part of his answer to the last question on there. http://blogs.westword.com/backbeat/2011/09/interview_peter_hook.php

Also, because when we were together in New Order, Bernard was always very negative about Joy Division. He always felt it should be left alone. He never wanted to play any old songs. Nevermind Joy Divison, he never wanted to play any New Order old songs. He really just wanted to concentrate on the future. And I think there's a place for the old ones and for the new ones. But he didn't agree. So it sort of stopped you from doing anything with regard to Joy Division whilst you were in New Order. It was only when I left New Order and got the distance that I was about to see that, as a musician, which I still am and I earn my living and feed my family by playing music, I have to revert to my music. So it seemed logical to go, "Well, why shouldn't I play Joy Divison? Why shouldn't I play Unknown Pleasures? Why shouldn't I play Closer? Why shouldn't I play Movement? Why shouldn't I play Low-Life? Why shouldn't I play Brotherhood?" I think it would be a wonderful thing if I got to play each one of them before I die. I'd be a very happy man when I got to meet my maker.

I can see Hooky's point of view that Bernard's ardent "anti-past" attitude proved to be a bit much for him. Focussing solely on the future and ignoring everything about your past is a bit overkill it's got to be said. For years NO fans have been wanting the likes of Dreams Never End, Age of Consent, EGG etc. returned to the set but it never happened. Realistically, Bernard probably vetoed their inclusion at the time.

However, at the other end of the spectrum we have touring 20-30 year old albums one after the other and playing nothing but older music year in year out with no trace of fresh material in the set. As Hooky points out, there's a place for both.

Hate to say it but I always thought Bad Lieutenant - whatever you thought of the LP - struck that balance pretty well at their gigs. They predominantly played a set of new material (say 70%) alongside a couple of JD/NO classics and other Barney collaborations.

"He [Bernard] really just wanted to concentrate on the future. And I think there's a place for the old ones and for the new ones. But he didn't agree. So it sort of stopped you from doing anything with regard to Joy Division whilst you were in New Order."

New Order revisited Joy Division's work pretty frequently between 1998-2006, didn't they? In '98 the Peel session they recorded for Radio 1 included two brand new recordings of Isolation and Atmosphere. They played pure JD sets at both the John Peel Day tribute and the first MvC. The regular gigs almost always featured Atmosphere, LWTUA, Transmission, She's Lost Control as well as periodically Heart And Soul, Isolation, Digital, Shadowplay and These Days. Not to mention Ceremony at almost every gig as well. JD's music was far from being ignored. I remember at the time some gig-goers were starting to moan that there was a bit too much JD in the set and it was preventing lesser NO tunes from being played (!)

That's the only bit of the interview I don't really get.

However, at the other end of the spectrum we have touring 15-20 year old albums one after the other and playing nothing but older music year in year out with no trace of newer songs in the set. It should be a blend. Hate to say it but Bad Lieutenant struck that blend pretty well. They predominantly played a set of new material (say 70%) and played a couple of NO classics as well as the likes of Out of Control. So it would seem that Barney's got the point of past stuff being played live now.

My point is that arguably both anti-past and anti-future approaches are a bit extreme and flawed?

Maybe some of the earlier NO songs might have been difficult for Bernard to sing as he got older, or found a more comfortable singing range. And when NO toured in the past decade, if I look at their setlists, they seemed to have played older NO songs (although mostly the same ones) such as True Faith, Blue Monday, Temptation etc.... so they weren't just playing newer songs from their newly released albums. Perhaps the anti-past attitude regarding JD worked in the earlier days when they wanted to start new as New Order. And I suppose once they were comfortable and had a 'distance' from that, they could finally play older songs, even JD ones. Maybe Hooky felt more comfortable about the past earlier than Bernard and felt that way about Bernard not singing JD songs. NO did play some JD songs live in the 2000s, right? (I remember that 'Digital' was on the Finsbury Park DVD and so on.)

I'm not saying Hooky hasn't got a point though. But that's just my thoughts about that. Not too many people have the energy and want to tour the world in the way Hooky does. But on the other hand, I can understand the criticism about the touring albums situation.

They left JD behind in the 80s and that was the best decision they could have made, there's no way the reconfigured line-up could ever do justice to JD anyway so it's far better left alone in favour of the current material of the time.

JD were brought back post '98, possibly even a bit too much, so I don't believe there was anything more they should have done JD-wise.

That's harsh. I've always regarded Ceremony primarily as a New Order tune, even though I know they played it as JD, they also played it throughout the 80s and plus I think it has got that classic uplifting NO feel about it.

LWTUA I agree with you on though. I wouldn't care if they never touched it again live.

Ceremony is considered just as much a New Order song as it is Joy Division. And I think it's great that a band still played it's debut single. And they had been playing 'Love will tear us apart' every show since 1998, so no surprise that every show you were at, you heard it!

A little harsh, true. But LWTUA, Atmos, SLC, et. Al. aren’t NO songs. They’re JD songs, and NO are playing covers. The line of connection seemed fairly thin when Bad Lieu are playing them (only the drummer – who wasn’t officially a member of the band at the time – was playing the same parts he did on the original record, as Barney wasn’t always playing guitar).

I’m fine with NO playing a JD song or two, but playing a very static set of very similar songs, in the same places on the set, day in day out, tour in tour out, can get boring. Not everyone saw NO as many times as many of us did, but even for someone who only saw them once on a tour, knowing that it was always going to be BLT/TF/Temptation/LWTUA/Blue Monday could get a little predictable.

I think Hooky doing Movement would be good as:

  1. he sings two trax ont he original
  2. his voice suits that album probably better than BS
  3. Theese records are never played live and I doubt BS can remember any of them.

Not too sure about the other albums though.

I agree, Movement really has to be the end of the line. I agree that NO still sounded a lot like JD at that point, so Hooky and the Light doing that album is not too much of a stretch. However, anything after that is just not authentic without Barney doing the vocals. Even Temptation would not sound right with anyone else doing the vocals, so I hope they wisely leave it out.

Now, that is a proper interview.

What a great read.

The more I think about this, the more I believe Hooky should just stick with the JD stuff and not bother with this whole Movement malarkey. He is always going to get an audience with the JD stuff. The band are right up there with the likes of Hendrix and the Doors in rock mythology. People of all ages will always have an interest.

In truth, who gives a shit about Movement? A few hundred New Order fans with a passing interest who'd probably only go and see Movement live if Hooky turned up near their doorstep? You're never going to get the yoof onside, like what he gets with Joy Division. Who under the age of 40 would give a shiny one about Movement?

There's an ongoing career for Hooky in simply touring the Joy Division stuff, I don't see any legs whatsoever in plodding on down this Movement path, and then PCL after that, etc.

In fact, Hooky sticking with Joy Division is possibly even a better a career choice than New Order sticking with, er, New Order. Especially as the live side of stuff will always be Hooky's passion.

I don't think people really make heroes of Curtis, Morrison, etc...but nobody is perfect and people tend to attach themselves emotionally to those who have similar problems. For instance, if you've ever had trouble staying faithful in a relationship, maybe you can relate to Ian on that level. We all stumble in life, and we like to know we're not alone.

True. I don't romanticize Ian for committing suicide, though it's tragic that he took his life. I think it was wrong for him to cheat on Debbie and he clearly didn't give thought to his daughter growing up without a Dad. He was 21. Most of use are confused or depressed someway at that age.

With regards to relating to someone...

I am 29.

I've been a New Order/Joy Division fan since I was 14.

About a year ago, I was diagnosed with Epilepsy after having a seizure that put me in the hospital.

I've had seizures since then. I don't take medication because I don't have health insurance. I cannot describe how scary and awful having an Epileptic seizure is.

Needless to say, being an Epileptic has changed the way I listen to Joy Division.

. Because in Bad Lieutenant he was playing New Order, and he was playing the normal New Order – ones that we’d played. So there was nothing new in it. He didn’t do anything different to how New Order was when we were New Order, you know what I mean? So it’ll be very interesting to see what he does. But yeah, I would like to play New Order. I would like to play Movement next. I don’t know whether you’d get around the world with Movement the way I have with Unknown Pleasures, but for my pleasure – no pun intended – it would be nice to do Movement, and go on to do Power, Corruption and Lies. As long as there’s an audience there – a few people – I can do it at the Factory, because it’s my club! (Laughs) Even if there’s nobody there, I can still do it, as long as I pay my musicians Read more:

There were some 'new' songs in BL's setlist---songs from the Never Cry Another Tear album.

I’m a fan of Joy Division’s music; I’m not a fan of the way Ian died. That’s the bit I hate about Joy Division. So it’s very difficult for me to comment on it. ....So I suppose in a way, whereas it would be difficult for those younger audiences to relate to 55-year-old blokes, it’s quite easy for them to relate to somebody like Ian, because he looks just like them. So I don’t know, really. But I’m not a great fan of that cult. It’s a strange way of looking at music to me.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of romanticising famous people who died young either.

So you don't like songs by Winehouse, Cobain, Hendrix, Curtis, Morrison, Joplin

I don't listen to that kind of music, but that's not because they died young. I just don't like the people who adore them in a cult-like way just because they've died young.

We are lucky in Oz, we have a reasonable health care system, and medication is so much cheaper. Sorry to hear you are unable to purchase the meds which could help prevent them in the future.

She said she isn't into romanticising dead stars; she never claimed she wouldn't listen or like their music -

total logic fail there, Big Mouth.

Thanks. :) I am sure you know that here in the US Health Care in unaffordable to most people, if they don't get it thru work they simply don't have it. I am one of those folks.

I do wish I was taking them as it might prevent the seizures from happening, but I do have to say this, the few times I did take the meds they really, really made me feel weird and not good.
