He said of this: "I would like to get on with my life to be honest. I have come to the conclusion that it would be better to bury the hatchet and sort it all out and get on with it. Unfortunately the other side, don’t seem to be doing that."

Since his plan to 'fuck them over' didn't seem to work out for him, now he's sorry and wants to be pals again?

He really needs to quit giving interviews.

It's all very sad really.

He turns on a sixpence these days, and i wish i could say it was about something other than money. But unfortunately that appears to be the main thing that makes him 'tick'.

Sadly, all i can see is the man trying to protect his income, and in particular his future income, which we all try and do, but to slag off your bandmates for years on end and then try and jump back into bed with them at the first sniff of cash, is really tough to watch. Especially after his lawyers have probably told him that he can't 'fuck them over'. :nonono: :nonono: :nonono:

Unfortunately the other side at the moment don’t seem to be doing that."

Judging from their actions, it seems the rest of New Order have moved on. They don't seem to be visibly angry about Hooky (regardless of how they really feel) every time they have an interview (and nowadays, there's not much interviews). They do seem to be 'getting on' with their lives, playing music etc.

Something tells me, by that quote, that maybe the next Gretton is Hooky's wife? Maybe she's the one that talked some sense into him and how he's been carrying on?

Just saying as it sounds like a way I would say it, if I was retracting something my wife talked some sense into me about.

If they all wanted to "get on with the rest of their lives" they would give it all a rest and stop flogging a dead horse.

It's all been about making money and taking sides.

They just need to lock themselves in a room together for six hours and have their respective wives / friends not let them leave until the shit is sorted out.

Having heard enough NO bootlegs from the 80s, Hooky could've turned down a bit.

Yeah, Bernard could've sung more in tune too, but it's a bit of a shame when his guitar bits are half the volume of Hooky's.

And maybe said wives could design them new stage costumes based on their respective star signs?

Then in 2014, "Love Juice" goes top 10 in Japan.

But you don't understand, Hookys bass amp volume control goes all the way up to 11, so he was always one louder than Barney..

I think Barney should rerecord Love Juice as a mash up with Fine Time - take out Hooky's bass and insert his Medallion Man groans and moans and heavy breathing all over the track...... that should really piss him off!

you always hurt the people closest to you...its a natural (but hurtful) human thing that we do.Based on this assumption i think hooky has been feeling vunerable lately and lashing out (wrongly) at his friends....im sure his attempts lately at burying the hatchet are not for financial gain....possibly guilt....were all human and make mistakes..even our musical heroes......well done Peter for making a start at appologising ....im still going to the troxy gig and yes you will be very much missed !

I can't see any reasons beyond the financial one. And i don't think he's even attempted an apology. Today's alleged revelations re: withdrawing his permission to release the 'Lost Sirens' certainly has no apologetic feel to it.

Sod that, in some people's eyes (e.g. the rabid fans who still come here and post their contributions) there is simply no more excuses by this point.... promising something as a goodwill gesture/treat and then subsequently pulling the rug from under people's feet amounts to nothing but treason.

And that's a crime punishable by stoning - or at the very least, a full day in the company of a very annoying z-list celebrity, locked in a room together.

I mean, I personally am not that fussed about any of this but there are nevertheless a lot of other people [on this forum] who are very cheesed off with all this procrastination.

A sad state of affairs. Hooky sounds like the guy who dumped the best girl he ever met by text message, and bangs on about it to his mates down the pub for the rest of his life whilst she meets someone new. And, by constantly playing the old stuff, bangs one out at the memory most nights of his life.

It's a sad state of affairs. The only person who needs to find peace with it is Hooky himself. He left. He chose not to be in the band. And, if the information is correct, sent a proxy to tell the rest of the band the news. If it comes to burying hatchets, he's the one who plunged it into the heart of the band a while ago and is now crying over the fact that it didn't kill the victim and the corpse decided it didn't need him anymore.

That's how it sounds, get over it Hooky. You screwed up,live with it like an adult. Dragging The Joy Division Revue tribute Show over the world at $200+ Meet-and-greets ain't exactly dignified. There's nothing edgy, or arty in it despite what you say in interviews. It's sad and a shame that I guy I once saw as almost a hero is behaving like this.

Yup.My heroes back when i was about 15-16 were Hooky, Barney, Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton... I'd also add John Peel to the list as a hero of mine back then. Sad that yer heroes eventually die but also sad that one of yer heroes has though still alive turned into a complete tosser:(

Im going to start listening to Mick Hucknall at this rate. He's a prick but Ive always thought that so I wont feel let down at any point.

New Order will realize they can make more money with him back in the band, and so they will let him back, especially if doing so allows them to release Lost Sirens.

March 2012.

money always wins out over spite.

To be fair, he will lose a lot of money by doing this. Obviously dropping the album before Xmas won't help, but the knock on effects of declining numbers going to his other projects will bite, as even the most ardent fans will switch off.

What we are waiting for I guess is his reasons for doing so, which could possibly be that the songs are inferior, and he doesn't want to unleash them on the fans blah blah blah.

Cue the Light's Lost Sirens Tour 2012.

I expect he'll be touring the "18th Anniversary of The Rest of New Order" in 2013, performing the whole album in full - would be interesting to try to hear him sing the 'backwards vocals' on the Dave Clarke mix of EGG.

You lot are all so weak and gullible that you ought to know what to do when somebody you formerly worshipped (or indeed still worship) pulls off a stunt like this.

Simply hit them where it hurts and refrain from buying their product - fuck 'em off.

See how they like it.

Easy peasy, y'know?

But most of you can't can you?

Cos your undying devotion for all things New Order is so all-encompassing it has made you blind.

Nothing by Freebass (not even any d/l's)

Nothing by The Light.

Nothing by Bad Lieutenant.

It just never interested me.

Only because what I heard on Youtube wasn't exactly that earth shattering.

What makes me think that Lost Sirens, when it finally gets issued, will be anything short of underwhelming likewise? (e.g. downloaded Hellbent back whenever, and it's pretty substandard as it is - no surprises there!)

Personally, I really enjoyed 'Hellbent' so I was looking forward to Lost Sirens. I wasn't going to buy it out of sheer blindness, my attitude is if it's anything like Hellbent then I'll probably like it. I think casting all of Lost Sirens as complete shite without hearing a note is ridiculous - fashionable to be cynical I suppose.

Similarly for me, the Bad Lieutenant album has a couple of really well written, melodic tunes on it however I would've preferred it if they'd varied the instrumentation a bit. But as it stands it was far from shite. It's a grower, which albums can sometimes be. If you invest the time the tunes get into your head and you become quite fond of it. It's not the "album of my lifetime" or even in my top 25 but for what it was I thought Bernard did quite well; he can definitely still write a tune. Ropey lyrics aside.

If you listen to something like BL's 'Higher Wider Deeper' which was hidden away as a Japanese bonus track and 7" vinyl b side it's just sheer quality from start to finish. A great rush of a pop song.

By contrast, the Freebass album on the other hand I just couldn't get into and to be absolutely impartial I gave it a literal shitload of listens. Bar the Burgess track on the EP there were only a couple of other tunes that grabbed my attention.

The normal answer from Camp Hook is "You don't have to buy tickets!"

Which I don't. Unless he plays my local church (not impossible and only 6 minutes walk from my house) I'm not going out of my way to see Hooky And The Boys do songs written four years before my wife was born.

I bought the Bad Lieutenant album and I like it. I bought the Light's live album. That's OK, at best, as far as tribute bands go. Freebass? Piffle with a rubbish singer. The instrumental album is OK.

I'm not bothering with the CD of twelvety acapella Rowetta tracks of her singing Atmosphere.

I understand the guy has to make a living. But if you haven't made yourself relatively financially secure after 30 years in the business and playing to 10-20,000 a people a night for a decade, your accountant needs a serious talking to.

EDIT : After all, Reading 98 was £250k for one show. In 1993, the London deal included £1m backpaid royalties (didn't it?).

Well in fairness to hooky he's had a couple of divorces, a failed nightclub that took a pile of money and other personal issues which are none of our business. All that money would be divided by 4 as well on top of whatever rob took (10 percent likely). Ill admit people are living on a lot less and are working a lot harder for their money but i doubt that he is awash with cash, it would hopefully explain his tactless money grabbing now.

I would also guess that the poorly received Freebass project left Hooky out of pocket (as probably documented somewhere here) and financially The Light is a safer bet but there surely is a time limit to that unless he does intend carrying it over to Movement..

Ultimately he should have reformed Monaco ,have mani and andy rourke (along with other people he's had gigs with or dj sets with) guest on a new album and include joy division/new order songs in any new live set. His management deserve a well aimed kick but i suppose the buck stops with him at the end of the day.

I personally would wonder if a musician and previous producer such as hooky would need to spend much on a studio in this day and age, apart from the mastering engineer people are churning out professional tracks out of garages these days.

He may not be awash with cash by pop-star standards, but my understanding is that he lives very, very comfortably. That interview posted a while back about his travel habits (a good read, by the way) made that pretty clear.

It's ironic to consider now in hindsight how happy Hooky was when he was in Monaco - he really did come across as relatively carefree and at ease - doing what he loved, outside of the usual democratic headache that is/was new Order, with fellow partner-in-crime and buddy Pottsy sharing the limelight, coming up with THOSE basslines and the rest, doing a very passable - and indeed listenable - facsimile of prime NO, without worrying about legal shit and the rest.

Seeing them live a few times between 1997-1999 doing [free] gigs here and there in and around Manchester was pretty enjoyable too.....he seemed relaxed and genuinely approachable......

So quite why he had to call time on that, freeing Pottsy to ply his trade elsewhere/solo, is a bit of a mystery.

I would even go so far as to say that Hooky's time with Monaco counts as probably his happiest of all.

Unless somebody somewhere knows otherwise.....

I dunno... the traveling Joy Division tribute probably will have the most interest, as far as decent crowds. Hooky can hit different cities. Joy Division creates a buzz. Nobody under the age of 45 saw Joy Division live.

Now a Movement tour in the same cities Hooky has hit before... will as many be willing to buy tickets? The novelty is gone, and there is another New Order tribute band out there now with the actual New Order vocalist.

In hindsight doesn't it appear obvious that Freebass had got little interest, thou I suppose Hooky could have actually sold some CDs at the shows. Neither Hooky nor Bernard want to be playing half full smaller venues at this stage in their careers... would you?

Funny you should say that because The Light basically are late-period Monaco minus David Potts but with Hook's son on board instead. Besides, Potts might not have been interested in a reunion. I'm not saying that's true but it's certainly a possibility that he might have said no. Potts was a key driving force as much as Hook in what Monaco were (he chose the band name) as well as how the songs were created. Reforming Monaco was perhaps not an option.

It really does depend on your definition of a "tribute band". In my mind, three out of the four original members is not a tribute band by any stretch of the imagination. Unless of course you consider one member of the band to be bigger than the whole. But that's never ever really been what New Order's about (for me).

So was the "New Order" of 2001-6 minus Gillian a "tribute band" to you, 0_o?

0_o wrote: Neither Hooky nor Bernard want to be playing half full smaller venues at this stage in their careers... would you?

Bad Lieutenant quite happily (and regularly) played smaller venues than NO did so not sure your point here. Freebass played the 100 club. Hooky's Light played pretty successfully to 300 people last week. Are smaller crowds suddenly beneath Bernard and Peter, 0_o?

After all, whatever you think of Bad Lieutenant musically, they did manage to record their album without going to a very expensive studio.

From this interview:

A lot of the comments on Brooklyn Vegan were, “Oh god, he must be skint. He must need the money to tour America.” But yet the last tour we did of America I actually had to go back home hand in my pocket to fund it, and I fully expect to be doing that this time. But the thing is, it comes down to that fact that what the hell are you supposed to do with your life when you’ve done what I’ve done for 34 years.

Doubt it. He's toured it to death album by album. Don't see him being invited to headline Glastonbury like Screamadelica did. Doesn't explain why he seems to be constantly scratching around for our cash either.

It's not a tribute. It's New order without Hooky. Wake up. And they are filling venues, selling out in nine minutes. Certainly at a much faster rate than say 6-7 years ago. Wake up, bell-end.

If Hooky himself is reluctant about it, then the possibility of that would be low, wouldn't it?

For example...from this interview: http://www.peek-a-boo-magazine.be/en/interviews/peter-hook-the-light/

You mentioned already in other interviews that you want to record new material with The Light, have you already recorded some demos of new songs? Not yet. The band have some ideas but I am reluctant because you dont sell records and it's very hard to recoup the expense of recording.

From here: http://eburban.com/feature/id.10088/title.closer-to-peter-hook-of-joy-division-in-a-ny-minute-interview

The Light, my current band, are ready to do new stuff and be a proper band but I don’t know if I am. It becomes very tricky when you have such a legacy to live up to and like I say, there’s a lot going on at moment.

For all the talk about money-grabbing, I think you can point to that particular bunch of paddies as a group of men who *really* love money. Bernard and Peter will fall out and cut their financial snouts off to spite their face simply because they don't like each other's aftershave*. U2, on the other hand, *must* loathe each other after all these years - but they stick it out because they like bathing in Cristal twice a day and having 12-year-old Slovenian boys delivered to their mansions by express FedEx helicopter delivery.

(* - NB pedants - this is a metaphor. I realise Bernard hasn't started shaving yet and that Hooky hasn't ever bothered to shave. Thanks.)

If everything is correct about the Sirens being blocked and all the other stuff he has said recently about Gillian etc, I don't think I could stomach the sight of him with New Order again.

I used to have a lot of respect for him but not anymore!

He may not be awash with cash by pop-star standards, but my understanding is that he lives very, very comfortably. That interview posted a while back about his travel habits (a good read, by the way) made that pretty clear.

And what exactly is 'your understanding'? How do you know that he lives 'very, very comfortably'? All these people presuming that ANYBODY in New Order made a packet and are set up for life are just plain wrong. And that's not based on me being privvy to any knowledge beyond what is already out there in the public domain; failed clubs, failed pubs, poor investments, a record label that went bust, divorces, a lack of touring revenue and the complete collapse in record sales in the last ten years all take their toll. Big houses, big cars, big yachts etc are usually accompanied by big mortgages and big finance deals that want re-paying. Don't be fooled.

I think it's a bit rich (excuse the pun) and very rude for anyone to get so uptight and vent so much anger about how another person who they don't even know decides to go about earning a living. They're just guys in a band you like. You don't know them. And, at the end of the day, they don't owe you fuck all.

I care about as much about Hooky's financial problems as he does about mine.

No, except when they then want me to buy what they're selling. :thumb:

You could say that hooky is a victim of his own success in a way because there is profit to be made from the records even now, but someone of his fame and musical stature cant really be seen to be cutting costs like a new band on the scene and still come out of it without be perceived to be miserable with the cash. The legacy he refers to.

So, by his own words, The Light want to be a "proper" band and make stuff, and Hooky would rather have them not be a "proper" band? Not good form.

I think, on the basis of what's happening here, is that plenty of hardcore nuttahs who care neough to post here are a bit bored of the HookyJoyDivShow going round the world.

So.... how much did they get for Reading 1998? £250,000 was what I heard.

And ... how much did they get for signing to London? £1,000,000 was what I heard. That's not a bad payday.

Enough to buy a decent house and secure yourself financially at 1993 prices.

I would wager that - regardless of stable line ups -VERY FEW BANDS would ever want to be quite as execrable as UPoo.

Although, of course, there are several contenders: Coldplay being one for starters.

Yeah but they are simple c___s that tap into similarly minded people. The world will always be full of simple c___s.

Thanks.)

Bono tells journalists at his L.A mansion that he prefers to be called a mick rather than a paddy.

Seriously though, i heard that u2 donated 5 million pound to schools in ireland for musical education in the recent past while new order donated millions to factory and the hacienda for musical education closer to home.A lot more in common than people think.

And as I have posted before - they have houses and cars that a number of us could probably never afford, ie big places in Alderley Edge and Rainrow. Looks like the 4 original members invested well. But good luck to them, they lost god knows what in years gone by and have worked hard for what they have.

bernard, stephen, and gillian seems to have adjusted well, after all the myriad setbacks. for middle aged stars they appear to want to continue to create new listenable music, unlike the aforementioned band from ireland, who have not achieved such in many years. at their age what bands have maintained such a high level of interesting listenability as no ? i cannot think of any. in 100 lifetimes i could not create anything even remotely as interesting as any song by new order, so i am grateful they still are working. i believe peter could create if he tried, i still like revenge, monaco.

New Order in Brussels seemed to me very rejunenated, but give it a year or two and unless they decide to make new music it will all get stale again surely, It takes courage I guess to walk away from music as for example Liz Fraser and Mark Hollis both seem to have done, I presume they are both happy to be away from the music game.

Hooky must sometimes wonder whether it is worth it with all the abuse he gets - some of which he unfortunately draws on himself..

as i am older than new order , i cannot make the computer do fun things . the photos that are top left of each comment intrigue me . for instances, the man in the window, the purple cat, the bull and dartboard, and the one with england's flag with silhouette of a man. am i allowed to place such nice pictures?

Albums … God. As a musician these days, the very thought of locking myself away for 12 months to write an album and then have it disappear on the Internet doesn't fill me with glee, to be honest. So, I think the people tend to concentrate more on EPs, to be honest, so I think we'd do an EP, I would think, as opposed to an album.

Though saying that I do have the yearning to make a new record but it’s finding the format of doing it and persuading yourself its a good idea. It’s not the money with these records but the time you know, locking your self away for six months and the effort that goes into it. But I’m quite happy and I’m having loads of things to do with the past and loads of things to do with the future.

ZANI – Do you have any intention of releasing the tour of Unknown Pleasures as a DVD, CD or download?

Peter Hook - We recorded it when we did Goodwood. But the thing is it costs so much money to do a proper live recording and you might not get your money back because of all those people who illegally download. They are shooting themselves in the foot, because most musicians are losing interest in recording, ‘cos they aren’t getting any money. The last New Order album took three years to record, you have to be insane these days to spend three years recording an album, because you are only going to get about ten grand back. The final New Order album cost around seven hundred and fifty thousand pounds to make. There is no chance, that we will recoup that money. So you have to record and work in a different way, so it is a difficult time to make money from music.

While I do see Hooky's point, and internet is changing music, maybe for the worse (or better, who knows), and production of music might be hurting compared to the care of the past.... however, most younger cutting edge bands aren't spending 3/4 of a million pounds to produce an album... that only happens when bands get old and bloated, and honestly, how many old and bloated bands make the best album of the decades in their twilight years?

It seems from reading those excerpts that hooky is trying to justify having a tribute band and im sure deep down he knows its not something he can justify. If he feels that strongly about making new music then thats up to him and some may agree with him but the whole shit with bernard, steve and gillian doesnt help his cause one iota.

The best music is always made in a short space of time or to a deadline and you can look at several bands for examples of that. i like the story whether its true or not of bernard getting locked into the apartment when they recorded true faith/1963 and spent the time writing the lyrics when he could do nothing else which turned out to be the best song lyrically in my view that he wrote. When i write i spend 3 quarters of the time on recording the material properly and on the vocals and even then bare minimum because ultimately only people who noticed the trem rate or the warmth are muso's and you dont write music for them. People will like it or they wont.

It's the old DOWNLOADING WOT KILLED EVERYFINK argument.

There's other ways of making money. Make the music affordable and available.

Tell you what though, if someone wants to put that 10" of Hooky re-recording old NO songs from the limited edition carved-from-the-Pavement-outside-the-Hac as an MP3 on a blog is it Downloading What Killed Everything? .... or is it spreading music to people that cannot drop three figures on a book to get a pointlessly limited, and hyperexpensive artifact?

If Hooky wants £300 off me, it'll have to be more than a meet/greet or a yellow vinyl 10".

I guess I just don't love the band enough to piss my money away and want to do more important stuff, like eating.
