Holy cow, can't we get a website overhaul?

The news items are weeks or sometimes months behind schedule. The blog entries on the front page are 3-4 years old, and inexplicably bisect the news feed from the latest entries to recent entries. The sleeve artwork that shows up in the header is poorly scanned, and other sources are available which are optimized for the web. The most visited area of the site - the forums - is way down at the bottom of the page.

Surely there are some web gurus who'd be happy to help Nicholas maintain the site, or take it over for him?

(And I know that technically the forums are at the top of the page, but it requires clicking through several times to get to recent threads. There are way too many separate forums for the small number of users on the site.)

I totally agree. All this site really needs is the front news page, the forums, and the song/ discography info pages. Scrap everything else. The site would surely use a lot less bandwidth is everything was streamlined

Well volunteered chaps.

The Mods have already mentioned this to Nic, hence Ally retiring his powers. It's not as easy as taking over, otherwise I'd do it. The server and system needs overhauled which would cost money and a lot of time.

Maybe if enough of you mail Nicos and offer him yer help, he might have a change of heart.

We should maybe just let it die now. It's on its last legs, and has been for some time.

Looks like David's all but thrown in the towel on his site too?

That Facebook New Order site is best avoided though - fuck me, there's some morons out there isn't there?

What was that other website Nicos did that was a replica of this site? Was it for the Cure online, or maybe Arcade Fire online or something?

Wonder how that site's doing?

Cannae really put up a decent argument against that to be honest, to be fair, after the split in 2006/7, the site hasnae been the same. Those first few halycon years were fookin magic though. Some of the best piss ups and holidays I've ever been to during those times :D

We shouldn't let it die - the forums are the best place for any news regarding the band. Maybe there should be a yearly contribution from us to enable the site to be run to its maximum potential. The guy who runs Buzzcocks.com does this by having a yearly auction of Buzzcocks related stuff, donated by the fans and people who use the site.

There are monetary contributions made to this site though, in order for it to be hosted.

The issue is that Nicos doesn't have time to doing any work or admin any more.

It can't die. There is nothing else out there on the web that can replace this website, fuck me even new order themselves like the site (didn't some official new order products reference this site?).

In fairness, I only ever use the forums.

As long as they were kept hosted the rest could go.

It's been quoted by many products over many years. Tis the best official non official site anywhere......well, it was

I miss Sebastien when he was the moderator on this website. He banned me just twice from this forum. Bastard! :evil4:

It won't happen. The will and the personnel to do it are not there.

As Al noted I think people who come here on a daily basis are coming to read the forums only. The news section is so badly out of date it's comical, as is the rest of the site (who gives a sh1t about "Community"?) So I'd be quite happy to see the forum moved by itself or a completely new one set up elsewhere.

The past couple of years has seen the gap NOOL's inactivity left filled anyway; New Order have their own site for news now, as does Hooky and Discogs is more up to date in terms of releases than NOOL has been for a long time. Not to mention the New Order Discography which NOOL's Music section is originally based on is more up to date now.

Plus the New Order groups on Facebook are slowly becoming more of a force these days and I note a steady increase in fans using them. Sad but there you go.

The problem with this website is its customization, everything was made by Nicolas and changes can only be made by him. There is no web interface or something that could be used by someone else to update NOOL pages. Apparently Nicolas is not interested in New Order anymore, so don't expect any regular updates.

I'm actually glad this website is still up and running. I guess the donations are not what they have been in the past, so I presume Nicolas is keeping this up using money from his own pocket.

worldinmotion, no?

Although David let his forum die about a year ago, and doesn't update his own site as much (he's too busy on the road with the Light, I guess!)

World In Motion was more of a list of David's collection with a news section and forum tacked on rather than a fully rounded New Order site. NOOL always had the edge over it in that way. Got to be said, it is a damn impressive collection but otherwise I never saw much of a reason to visit it more than once or twice. The forum famously never got much use, barely more than a handful of posts per year before it went offline.

WIM's obviously fallen into a state of disrepair also but there's no doubt Sultan is still as into the band as he always was. He popped up as enthusiastic as ever at Brussels and "toured" with The Light (the audience warm up act I wonder? )

Ah yeah, forgot about that one.

Is the sea shell in the bottom left corner a homage to Touched by the Hand of God? :p

I'm not volunteering, I've already done plenty to give back to this community. :)

There are younger, faster, more technically adept people than me who could fill the job. I was on the original Ceremony mailing list in '97, lurked here once the site went live, until 2006 when I finally signed up. I don't think the site has changed at all in the past six years.

If it's all customized, maybe someone should chuck the entire site and rebuild from scratch? There are countless click-to-install templates that would work.

Why does this site take up so much bandwidth? There aren't any downloads. By trimming off the outdated parts of the site and slimming down to a basic news feed and the forums, I can't image it would be too costly. The Dreamhost plan I use for my own website is huge, and only costs about $100 annually.

Jeb, what you are suggesting makes lots of sense and I don't think you'll find anyone who disagrees. Even Spotnick wouldn't.

However, speaking as someone who offered (Shug can attest to this) more than once to help run the web site and keep it up to date, it simply won't happen. Control allegedly cannot or will not be passed to anyone else. Add to that Spotnick is not around to invest the time in changing it over to a new system which someone could then take over.

When NOOL falls over these days due to a .Net error it normally takes around 1-2 weeks to restore it and with every error the downtime is getting longer. I'm waiting for that fateful day it falls over and basically doesn't come back.

Very sad  I'd be the first to say these forums have a unique character which couldn't be easily replicated elsewhere but it might have to be.

3 years to be exact ally.

It has been a lot harder than i had ever imagined to be truly honest, being a one an band doesnt help either. Having said that, a lot of kind people have sent me reams of information and it has been a nightmare to put it in some kind of order.

I want to make it my own and special,i'm mindful of the two other New Order sites on the net so http://neworderweb.net HAS to be different.

Very hard trying to make something different when the information is effectively the same.

The finance is there, the best Discograhies in the world are there, the permission to use content from official sources are there, the one thing that is sadly lacking is an official gigography and a usuable forum platform.

The forum is my biggest headache at the minute.

The "free" forums you can get are absolutely gash,i spose thats why they are free

It looks like i will have to start from scratch and build one myself, this means literally months of html coding by hand.

If someone wnats to help with the forum for my site or anything else then my email address is at the bottom of the page.

I do have to agree with the comment on a post above though, the forum is the lifeblood of this site and no one could ever wish to compete with it,though some may try.

I am also going to need some help with the admin for my site,so again,if anyone wants to help/donate their precious time then find my email addy below.

Yeah, this should cost $100 a year, drop in a 10-minute SMF install for the forum. I also use Dreamhost for several forums and highly recommend them or another similar.

The $100 a year could easily be offset with a handful of subtle (music-related) ads on the front page.

You could link in a customized wordpress.org area for any content (news, or if we want to keep lyrics, images, etc).

www.newordernow.net links to this forum, the Niagra discography and Sam's updated Water Rat discography.

All the necessities.

As I recall World In Motion's forums were actually busier than NOOl's back in the very early days (2000/2001 era). It was WIM that Jonathan Scott chose to release all the info and track reviews of Get Ready before anyone else had heard it. I remember eagerly checking the site on a daily basis from internet cafes in Oz for this info. I'm pretty sure the 2001 tour dates appeared their first as well. I know that I for one was a regular contributor on their before I was on here. Good source of info but only for about 12-18 months then NOOL took over and never looked back.

Surprised this gem from yesteryear is still going/active.
