Peter Hook interview [Timeout Melbourne]

Steve and Gillian – Gillian in particular, she didn’t really quite add a lot to New Order’s music because she was always very much a silent partner, shall we say, and Steve’s interest waned over the years, very much, so it was always me and Bernard that were the principal songwriters. We were the musical force. And to me, when the two main songwriters stop working together, you have a split. But in Bernard’s world, he says that I left
What does he think Gillian did in her years in 1981 to 2001 New Order? The silent partner?
Surely she wasn't some doll or teamaker, she did contribute something you know? And when has Steve's interest waned? What songs/albums does he think were mainly written by himself and Bernard?
So from this comment it sounds like he thinks New Order's main songwriting people were himself and Bernard, with Steve contributing some (or maybe the human drum machine
) and Gillian the 'silent partner' who was just a silent lady that looked pretty next to a keyboard
.
And no...New Order didn't split. Hooky left.
They basically said to me, “Here’s a buck, Hooky, for the use of the name New Order.” And I’m trying to get two bucks.
Do you think if he gets three bucks he will stop DJing?
"There’s this article where Bernard intimates that he’s got things that I’ve done that he’s ready to make public, like I haven’t got things that he’s done that I couldn’t make fucking public."
How low are they willing to stoop with this feud?
You have to wonder..![]()

I went to school with the guy who wrote that. He did well not to gush as he's a massive NO fan
No respect for breast cancer survivor. And if it wern't for Gillian and Steve, there would be no BLT or Guilty partner, or beat to Blue Monday.

You lost that argument as soon as you mentioned 'Guilty Partner'.

(btw, really? that sure sounds like a non-machine hook/sumner tune - )
Jack - gonna be hard to defend hooky on this one. He needs to see a doctor I think. He's getting older and might have selective memory.
Business wise I can understand why he wants a slice of the new order pie. He has been clever not to use the band name joy division and is quite clear that his band is called the light, performing jd songs.
Tbh if new order called themselves bad lieutenant playing new order I wouldn't be arsed. I'd still go watch them and buy the records. Maybe they should drop the name..... If only because it would be a tragedy that hooky got a slice of anything from here on in.
its strange he's coming out with stuff about gillian and steve now
i seem to recall an interview,i think it was with stephen hague about the recording and writing of true faith(i could be wrong on both of those)
and he said the 4 of them did their parts seperately around each other,so he can't be saying she brought nothing to the sound
Has this very strange dream last night (really....!) and that in it I read a newspaper headline that Peter Hook married Whitney Houston.
I was mortified actually!
Don't ask me what the fuck that means....it was in the dream.

if your waiting on a tasteless joke you should give it a few more days.
I thought everyone had agreed not to react every time Hooky gives an interview. Or was that just in my dream?...
It's all true - well, insomuch as Steve and Gillian made tea for me whilst I made the two Other Two records all on my own. Even the vocals.
if bernard dressed up like princess leia and farted the star spangled banner whilst stamping on a cat (not the eck eck bluish one), and then said he dreams of bono , well, i guess i could overlook all but the last bono bit.

yup... a 'head' doctor. Tis always concerning to see how the mighty keep on falling. ![]()
poor gillian and stephen, standing by behaving like invertebrates, and trying , but absorbing only so much , lucky to be in the studio and arena, and putting together the other two and superhighways probably by accident . and bernard left the toilet seat up , twice

That's your prerogative.

It's certainly a strange thing of Hooky to say. I can hear loads of the Other Two in tracks like Mr Disco, World in Motion, Special & Ruined in a Day. If you think of the first 3 tracks on The Other Two & You and then relate them to the 4 NO ones I've listed and it's quite obvious to me. Plus anything that's a little 'leftfield' of the NO stuff can probably be attributed to The Other Two (again, think of tracks 5 & 9 on Super Highways and relate to Eligia, interlude in Perfect Kiss etc). Granted, I can't imagine there's not a lot of Steve & Gillian in Get Ready but anything prior to that there is. And I can imagine Steve's attention wasn't purely on making WFTSC due to the small fact that his wife had cancer!?
Hooky sounds so bitter I think a spot of counselling might help!
Hooky's just becoming a complete c**t! His continued attempts to belittle Gillian's role within the band, just comes across as sexist and now he's starting on Steve.
While i'm no expert, I always thought Bernard was the main songwriter in terms of melody and lyrics while the others embellished their own parts. Though I know Steve & Gillian were responsible for some of the stuff on Technique. Hooky seem's to be painting himself as McCartney to Bernard's Lennon, which I think is mostly wish fulfillment on his part.
I fear his continued bitterness and petty digs at his former band members, is continuing to alienate people and will only lead him to a dark place.

If he wants to play JD songs or make music as The Light, that's his business. If the others want to continue as New Order, that's their business. Even if you think that he is getting older and may not remember everything or even details, the remarks about Gillian and Steve are just...![]()
I don't believe for a second that Steve was sat in the recording studio for both Get Ready and WFTSC being told what drum patterns to play or what keyboard parts to program.
He added nothing to the creative process during those LPs that could amount to "song writing"?
I just find that very doubtful.

Well said.
