It's in August so inevitably it will be cold , windy and pissing down with rain. God , just imagine having to listen to the shower of shite Blur in that. No thanks.

Bargain.

I bet there's VIP for this though.

Sure is - to quote the website:

"VIP Packages There will be VIP packages available at Hyde Park delivered by Live Nation Experience the leading producer of VIP ticket packages at live music events. Since 2004 Live Nation Experience has specialised in the creation, sale and fulfilment of VIP packages on tours, special events and festivals.

On sale date for packages to be announced soon, please register for more information about VIP Packages."

So ho, hum. Still be trying to get tix via BT 'cos it should be a laugh - Hyde Park was last time - what I can remember of it - great meet up before, managed to get lost between pub and Hyde Park and there's still a 'Special Guest' to be announced, what other legends are there left?? :)

It lessens their integrity because the Tories have used this whole event for various reasons - tents are now illegal outside the stadium - the ten year protest outside Parliament was decimated for the Olympics - various roadways in London will be closed for VIPs - and near the site itself - even now people who live close to the site are being stopped and searched (some being thrown against the wall). People's rights are being eroded and to construct the Olympic village people's homes were lost.

I know about Dammers not playing for years - I was remarking on his political principles. He would never have allowed the band to play this event - and knowing The Specials are playing this Boris Johnson luvvie event is even worse than knowing New Order are playing it.

I think you're ascribing a whole bunch of political weight to it that isn't there : it's a gig on the day of the closing ceremonyt of the Olympics, it's not exactly called "WE FUCKING LOVE THE TORIES", is it? I doubt that N.O. will have jettisoned the political leanings they made clear in the 80's.

Er, don't you like Oasis wannabes 'Kasabian' - now they are shite

I'll defend Blur and say - fantastic tunes, and they are a superb live band.

Agreed, it's a bit bizarre to think if any other political party had been in charge this concert would have been any different or somehow shown more "integrity".

I have zero love for the Olympics, I think they're a total waste of time & money but the bid was won under Labour, the wars the Parliament Square tents were pitched in protest at were started under Labour and whether it's Ken or Boris in London Mayor HQ this gig would be going ahead in an identical manner. The Olympic village redevelopment plans were also approved under Labour as the Coalition's only been in for 2 years.

Don't get me wrong, sometimes the Tories more than deserve a slagging but in this instance it's a bit wayward to have a go at them over a pop concert like this which would have occurred anyway.

Bang on mark, what a fantastic opportunity to go down in history as one of the bands who were involved in the closing of the Olympics. Btw I also think blur are a great band.

I'm not even going to try for this one, will be overpriced and I couldn't give a fook about the olympics to be honest.

I'm happy with the Manchester Apollo thanks :thumb:

Btw... bringing politics into a thread :nono:

Good memory.

I DO like Kasabian, however,as i put in a post on here when velociraptor came out, they are not consistent enough, some of their songs are a bit "tweedy" (not to be confused with that goerdie bint either!) Musically,Kasabian are fare superior than any of the shite that those two monobrowed cunts have ever done, again thats my opionion. As someone who hated the shitpop era and the stupid fuckin sensationalist journalism that came with the "battle of the bands" shite,it makes sense for me to dislike oashite and Blur with a passion.

I mean, come on Cuntry fuckin house, what a load of complete and utter fuckin wank

Britpop is what got me listening to bands, so I can't hate it really.

I mean, I'd prefer to have the radiowaves filled with britpop era indie than the dross today for example, a lot of the bands might have been rubbish, but at least they were bands.

I liked Blur and Oasis too, before I got into New Order.

This is England though. I don't see how New Order are particularly 'leftfield' over here.

Should imagine there's a big crossover between Specials and New Order fans (especially from the people I know here) as a lot of folk are of 'a similar age' (and then you even get the 'youngsters' like Shug going to both). Blur are definitely the odd one out of those three, I'd have said, and even then not massively different.

I am thinking of a situation sort of like where Morrissey opened for Madness, and a bunch of Madness loving yobs booted him off the stage (you know, macho boot boys tend to hate Morrissey).

Now this is an extreme example....but I always figured that the sorts of subcultures formed around a group like Madness wouldn't jive much with New Order. That I could be wrong about though.

I think New Order are left field compared to Blur and the Specials, sonically and also in every other way.

Morrissey didn't get booted off stage. He had a few things thrown at him and then didn't show for the second night. And, quite frankly, did himself no favours anyway turning up draped in a Union Flag at an event which was always likely to attract a right-wing element. You play with fire, you get burned.

Anyway, that was 20 years ago. I don't see its relevance today, not its relation a band like New Order. And I'd also go on to say that the sort of subcultures who formed around the likes of Madness and the Specials are exactly the same subcultures who affix themselves to the likes of New Order over here. Attendance of folk from this forum at the comeback Specials gigs two years ago only confirms this.

Absolutely. That particular incident didn't have much to do with "macho boys hating" rather an ill-advised "artistic" flirting with far right-wing imagery. I personally don't believe that Moz is a racist and some of his songs from that era are misunderstood (We'll Let You Know & National Front Disco) but still he played with fire and well, there you go... it was a bad call at the time and has gone down in UK music history as an indisputable bad call by His Mozness.

However, it was slightly ironic only a few years later Noel Gallagher was playing a Union Jack guitar and nobody batted an eye-lid. In fact they were going "mad fer it" but that was the start of a completely different "era"...

Exactly. It's interesting that the press crucified Moz for wearing that Union Jack flag, when just a few years later, Blur, Oasis, Bowie, and may other Brit Pop groups were lauded for it.

And yeah, Morrissey isn't racist at all, but a few of his songs were misunderstood to stay the least.

I don't know much about the Specials fan base as they don't have much of one here in the US. I know they are par on legends in the UK though (and a great band).

Yeah but to be honest (and we're taking the thread off topic a bit) Moz really should have known better. He was associating himself with some very specific imagery and used big skinhead photograph backdrops for his live shows. He knew what he was doing. Again, I definitely don't think he's a racist but he was simply being Morrissey which results in that sort of stuff but never takes into account that a large chunk of people won't "get it".

The later stuff by bands like Oasis was just them using a flag to denote a musical movement which the press had coined "Britpop". They weren't sticking up massive fucking pictures of skinheads and writing songs about the National Front who were/are an extremely poisonous influence on UK society.

You will note that by 1994 he had completely abandoned all that.

Whoever won the bid, David Cameron and his cronies are balls deep and utterly relishing involvement in all aspects of the Olympics and they dont give a flying f*** who is affected by the behemoth.

Our heroes accepting an invite to play this linked event is about as far from "punk" as can be.

Filthy Lucre.

I fully agree, but then 'Crystal' and 'World In Motion' are hardly New Order's finest songs ,yet are two of the most popular ones. I detested the group 'James' for years as I hated the song 'Sit Down'. It's only in the last year i've realised what a fantastic group they are.

Agree with Ger Boy in this instance, the most popular songs by certain bands are rarely the best nor the ones you listen to the most. Blur's most well known are Parklife, Country House, Song 2 etc. but those are definitely the ones I listen to the least. They're shite basically.

I do remember having Think Tank on heavy rotation just under ten years ago and that album is about as least successful and as far away from mockney pop as you can get; just a nice understated set of songs which require a bit of effort and repeated listens to appreciate.

Also, Albarn is a genuinely talented musician which Gorillaz has also shown both commercially and critically; not everything he touches turns to gold but most does. Credit where it's due.

Everyone knows that the Olympics is a just big excuse for a jamboree and diverting attention from failures governments are involved in whether it be the economy, foreign policy etc. I don't agree with the waste spent on it nor the Diamond Jubilee but they'd all be doing it regardless of political persuasion. If Brown was still in charge he'd be up there with his constipated smile trying to do a rap whilst swinging the Olympic torch in an awkward manner. It's not new news.

I'm sure I remember NO playing for some Royals in the '80s so why didn't you renounce your loyalty then? Or trotting out Temptation at the Commonwealth Games in '98? At least some regular kids will be taking part for the UK in these Olympics. The "punk" dream has been over for some time really; the real world came calling long ago. Even Hooky was allegedly approached to do Celeb Big Brother but offered his place to Bez (who went onto win, ouch) due to illness at the time.

Anyway, here's Johnny Rotten remaining true to his punkish roots:

Agree with you there on a few points lad.

I don't think Gordon Brown would have been quite so keen as Cameron in his involvement. Cameron is a cock. Brown for all his many faults had some humility.

I do not see how Hooky surrendering his Big Brother place indicates that we all should accept our lot because the "real world came calling". Are people not getting fucked over by the Olympic machine? Should they just accept it cos Hooky let his place go on CBB!

I refer to "punk" as an attitude, not some nostalgic notion.

A f*** you anti-establishment attitude which inspired the creation of the very band we are talking about.

I pointedly said filthy lucre.....Rotten may have done an embarrassing volte face* but Barney always maintains New Order have "punk" integrity.

(*Although he did justify doing it as a way of financing the PiL reformation....)

Playing one song in manc for the commonwealth games (I have no recollection of them playing for royalty!) is entirely different.

Playing this large scale event damages that "punk" integrity in my opinion but its not quite enough for me to "renounce my loyalty". It doesnt really work like that.

Now if they started to give interviews slagging off cancer surviving ex-members....err.

Ha. Funny.

Never have two equally shite songs gone head to head in a battle to prove which one was, perhaps, not as shite as the other to the record buying public.

Shame on you for falling for that marketing exercise in 1995.
