That's bollocks. I think New Order have always been mostly apolitical but if pushed I think they would reveal they lean towards the left. Certainly Rob Gretton and Tony Wilson were from a leftist background.
Dave Rowntree is a labour supporter who has stood in council elections for them if I remember correctly and The Specials are still pretty left leaning presumably..

I keep a safe distance from Specials & Madness shows nowadays. Too many knobedds & scraps. Even Zieg Heiling in Toon' @ Sham 69 gigs & SLF. Regardless of the Mozzer show at Finsbury park (which i went to) Madness still had card carrying roadie members of the British movement & later Skrewdriver. Nasty fuckers.
Much prefered (& still do) lefty bollocks from Angelic Upstarts, Crass & Conflict.
Which was always fun being from the other side politically.

gretton and wilson may have been to the left but that doesnt mean the band were to be honest. think the jon savage interview with bernard goes into things like that.
the left is a very broad term anyway, the band may be left leaning on social issues but may well be right leaning economically i.e not keen on socialism or communism.

live aid supporting feeding people in africa would be considered left wing but i honestly find it hard to believe that some of those musicians like eric clapton and the coke fuelled junkies who played live aid would be left wing. its not always black and white.
as far as im aware as a foreigner, the actual grievances the miners had were overtaken by the more militant left union leaders battle to break thatcher or vice versa.
miners lost out when it became the scargill v thatcher battle.

Blur were the next, younger generation and therefore their audience is more active (in their mid-30s), while New Order fans are in their mid-40s. And to be honest, I encountered more people enthusiastic about Blur than New Order. New Order's fame is based on their 80s output when they were too indie, i.e. less appealing to the masses.
