Anybody here hear the NYC band "Interpol" yet? You guys NEED to listen to thier song "Roland" and then play J.D.'s "Shadowplay". Also, if you get a chance, try and hunt down some pics on the web.. when I saw them live here last month, the lead singer/guitar player looked like he stepped out of one of the pics of Barney from the "Heart and Soul" booklet and the bass player was dressed exactly like Kraftwerk circa Man Machine. They're signed to Matador and currently on their first tour of U.S./Europe.

and so it goes...yet another cheap shot of target marketing...

Not my intention, chief.

I'm actually fucking shocked that Interpol doesn't have to pay J.D. royalties for the song and I thought some of you would be entertained by the.. "homage".

They're not Joy Division plagerists, they're far more chilled out and melodic on most of their tracks. And they're fuckin great as well.

Hey, the record's ok, they were tight, sounded great and were kinda boring live and I'd see them again, but the fact is the lead singer dresses JUST LIKE Barney used to and "Roland" sounds EXACTLY like "Shadowplay". Roland does not sound "similar to", "sort of like" or "influenced by" Shadowplay, it sounds EXACTLY like Shadowplay, practically note for note.

Are they a tribute band? ... if so, why aren't they called Joy Divider or something? ... Thieves Like Them?

It does not! I've just listened to it again, there's really very little resemblance. Interpol are far more jangly than JD. It's also influenced by Velvet underground, Early U2, The Chameleons and the Bunnymen.

I definitely agree with the Chameleons/Echo/The Sound thing; and, honestly, I think everybody is influenced by somebody so it really doesn't bug me to hear influences in bands, Interpol of course, included. Still, Roland sounds EXACTLY like Shadowplay. I'm suprised they had the balls to put it on the record. If you don't hear it, then we're obviously listening to different songs.

Guess we'll just have to agree to differ on this one...

Trawling through some of your posts, Huntsy, I see no evidence to support your theory.. CTB :bear:

Every year the music press tout some bunch of chancers as the "new Joy Division" (see, for example, Marion and JJ72).

The difference here is that a) Interpol DO actually sound like JD, and b) they're actually pretty good.

Still reckon they sound more like Kitchens of Distinction, tho'..........

Didn't he mean 'ouch' because of the comparison with the Kitchen Sink people?

Either way zero tolerance on gags aimed at me, I have skin thicker than a walrus' back ... and if I haven't, I should have living near the sea!

Deal with it.

Oh Jeeze..

I'm afraid you guys have me all wrong.. I said "ouch" because of what was obviously an enormous amount of work CTB did to validate the theory his friend the Huntsman posited. 2414 posts he went through, and apparently all for nought. It brings a tear to my eye (as opposed to a "tear to my rectum" see "Doormen" reference in my profile)to see this kind of loyalty to ones friends. And the fact that this friendship apparently spans contintents (as opposed to "incontinence" again, see "Doorman" refence in my profile) makes it all the more bittersweet.

Kudos to you, my new friends.

Sincerely,

Just "T"

This day an age I think there's every chance you'll get a decent shout with a smart looking broad with that wig. I'd suggest to lose a few pounds but the chicks dig a man that resembles John Candy circa '85's hit film 'Splash Mermaid'.

DJ T ... get yourself back for more intercontinental battling. It's all in jest and sometimes we even laugh a little.

I doubt Candy the Animal read any more than 3 posts to ascertain I spout mostly hot air. If I was inanimate I could boil water in my mouth and release steam.

Back to Interpol; I agree they sound like Joy Division but they especially sound like the Chameleons, but most American reviewers have probably never heard of them. Interpol is a two-guitar band and really concentrate on guitars; as someone said, much janglier than Joy Division, while Joy Division is more about rhythm. Some Television in there, too. As for "Roland", it sounds more like "Out of Control" by U2 than "Shadowplay", particularly the guitar solo. They rip off Joy Division the same way the Chameleons and U2 did: less rhythm, more jangly guitar, happier, not so good in the lyrics department. At least nowadays mainstream reviewers can spot a Joy Division influence.

Most of the Interpol reviews say the singer sounds "just like Ian Curtis" but I have to disagree, just having a deep voice doesn't mean you sound like Ian. He sounds more like the Kitchens of Distinction guy, and at other times the Psychedelic Furs guy, Peter Murphy, and others, but not much like Ian.

But as for straight-up plagiarism, check out Interpol's song "Say Hello to the Angels", otherwise known as "This Charming Man" by the Smiths. You can even sing "punctured bicycle, on a hillside, desolate, will nature make a man of me yet...while in this charming car... etc." over it. More obvious than the Roland/Shadowplay comparison, I guarantee. The rest of the record is post-punk all the way, and then in the middle they turn into the Smiths.

I saw them live and they were nothing like Joy Division live. They were polished, rather than raw, and while it was beautiful, moving, and somewhat rocking (not enough), it wasn't anything like the rip your guts out overwhelming rubbed raw punk powerhouse and weird charisma that is put across on live Joy Division recordings.

I like the Interpol record. It could use more rhythm and better lyrics, but it's rousing ear candy in a sound I can't get enough of. It's derivative but everyone's got influences and if you can make a good record anyway more power to you. They are getting hyped perhaps beyond merit as part of this current New York scene in just the past few months, while there have been plenty of other bands like Versus and Modest Mouse and who knows how many others who've been at least as deserving but never received this level of attention. Well. It beats the Strokes.

The Liars and The Rapture from New York are pretty good too, Gang of Four type stuff. I really don't mind a post-punk revival, there wasn't enough of it the first time around.

i was too sort of confused at the abundence of Joy Division references towards Interpol... maybe in a coupla spots, but mostly you could compare them to many post-punk or post-post-punk type bands... track 5 jumped out to me too as very inspired by the Smiths, very obvious, but then i did not read about them being like the Smiths in the reviews at all??? what about Echo and the Bunnymen? i don't remember them very well so maybe not... i think one reviewer started calling them like Joy Division-like and others jumped on the bandwagon, even though they had barely heard of Joy Division...

the lyrics are not Joy Divisionish at all, to me, and you could find dozens of indie bands over the last 20 years who utilize the classic bass and drums with the contrasting guitar style much more closely... a local longtime band called Scrawl are in some ways very Joy Divisionish, but they hardly fit the stereotype...
