Anybody here hear the NYC band "Interpol" yet? You guys NEED to listen to thier song "Roland" and then play J.D.'s "Shadowplay". Also, if you get a chance, try and hunt down some pics on the web.. when I saw them live here last month, the lead singer/guitar player looked like he stepped out of one of the pics of Barney from the "Heart and Soul" booklet and the bass player was dressed exactly like Kraftwerk circa Man Machine. They're signed to Matador and currently on their first tour of U.S./Europe.

and so it goes...yet another cheap shot of target marketing...

Not my intention, chief.

I'm actually fucking shocked that Interpol doesn't have to pay J.D. royalties for the song and I thought some of you would be entertained by the.. "homage".

They're not Joy Division plagerists, they're far more chilled out and melodic on most of their tracks. And they're fuckin great as well.

Hey, the record's ok, they were tight, sounded great and were kinda boring live and I'd see them again, but the fact is the lead singer dresses JUST LIKE Barney used to and "Roland" sounds EXACTLY like "Shadowplay". Roland does not sound "similar to", "sort of like" or "influenced by" Shadowplay, it sounds EXACTLY like Shadowplay, practically note for note.

Are they a tribute band? ... if so, why aren't they called Joy Divider or something? ... Thieves Like Them?

It does not! I've just listened to it again, there's really very little resemblance. Interpol are far more jangly than JD. It's also influenced by Velvet underground, Early U2, The Chameleons and the Bunnymen.

I definitely agree with the Chameleons/Echo/The Sound thing; and, honestly, I think everybody is influenced by somebody so it really doesn't bug me to hear influences in bands, Interpol of course, included. Still, Roland sounds EXACTLY like Shadowplay. I'm suprised they had the balls to put it on the record. If you don't hear it, then we're obviously listening to different songs.

Guess we'll just have to agree to differ on this one...

Trawling through some of your posts, Huntsy, I see no evidence to support your theory.. CTB :bear:

Every year the music press tout some bunch of chancers as the "new Joy Division" (see, for example, Marion and JJ72).

The difference here is that a) Interpol DO actually sound like JD, and b) they're actually pretty good.

Still reckon they sound more like Kitchens of Distinction, tho'..........

Ouch.

Oh, c'mon - 'twas just a joke. Plus, it was the wittiest thing I have said this year. I respect the Hunt - make no mistake. CTB :bear:

Didn't he mean 'ouch' because of the comparison with the Kitchen Sink people?

Either way zero tolerance on gags aimed at me, I have skin thicker than a walrus' back ... and if I haven't, I should have living near the sea!

Deal with it.

Oh Jeeze..

I'm afraid you guys have me all wrong.. I said "ouch" because of what was obviously an enormous amount of work CTB did to validate the theory his friend the Huntsman posited. 2414 posts he went through, and apparently all for nought. It brings a tear to my eye (as opposed to a "tear to my rectum" see "Doormen" reference in my profile)to see this kind of loyalty to ones friends. And the fact that this friendship apparently spans contintents (as opposed to "incontinence" again, see "Doorman" refence in my profile) makes it all the more bittersweet.

Kudos to you, my new friends.

Sincerely,

Just "T"

This day an age I think there's every chance you'll get a decent shout with a smart looking broad with that wig. I'd suggest to lose a few pounds but the chicks dig a man that resembles John Candy circa '85's hit film 'Splash Mermaid'.

DJ T ... get yourself back for more intercontinental battling. It's all in jest and sometimes we even laugh a little.

I doubt Candy the Animal read any more than 3 posts to ascertain I spout mostly hot air. If I was inanimate I could boil water in my mouth and release steam.
