It seems that all I ever hear about Gillian is that she screws up quite often, and that she's rather dull at the concerts.
I just read from the waterrat site that she was dancing at the Finsbury gig. Did anyone else see this?
Has she ever done anything else?

That's right! Well recalled! And if you looked carefully in one of the scenes, Tony Wilson is actually seen waving his hands underwater in the general direction of Gillian. On initial impressions, this was generally assumed to be him trying to cover up his loose bits whilst the camera spiralled in ever closer....but then you detect some ripples radiating outwards from the crotch area - yes - you guessed, crafty Wilson had just silently detonated one in the bath.
I honestly felt for Gillian then, I really did!
she wore nice shorts in World in Motion video...
its too easy and mean to make fun of her, but sometimes it made you uncomfortable to watch... Gillian never seemed comfortable or appropiate for the "rock/pop star" life, which was cool, because New Order was the anti-band band back in the 80s... but then by the 90s Barney became deluded started to think they were a real pop band, leading to being ruined for a decade...

you know that quote "ever noticed our songs have big endings...little dicks/big endings"? those big endings were in large part due to Gillians excellent keyboard work in the studio. The most glorious moments in neworder songs are where all the instruments work together...without Gillian those would just be ordinary rock songs...the old men we saw painting by numbers, going through the motions are NOT neworder...neworder are Morris, Gilbert, Sumner, Hook...NO CUNNINGHAM!
last time I watched the Ukranian National Home Bar gig on video I had the distinct impression she was a 'better' guitar player than Barney, at least in the technical/accuracy sense. She was playing some of the stuff I had assumed he would have done. I've never felt she was to blame for any of the stuff that I don't care for, and she's not a slouch on guitar (although still dubious on keys, but whatever), so I'd have to say maybe she kept them from getting worse earlier. Look at the recent stuff with her widening absence...

I wonder if she ever got over Barney glaring at her a few times for the bum notes she played in that concert (can't remember the song). Gillian was certainly essential to the New Order cocktail, and she is missed. If you want to ask what she's ever done, think about her contribution to the naivety of amateur musicians creating wonderful songs.

I think Barney would be mortally offended by that comment ! Gillian can hardly play either guitar or Keyboards !
I think Barney is great, but honestly from a technical standpoint, he can't hardly play guitar or keys either !

You're right about the role Gillian plays (played?) in the Order. She has/had some magic touch that makes/made the songs sound different. It was always special...

If you're trying to say she had more gaffes than the blokes, I think you should provide some specific examples. I don't see it. All of them have had their share except Steve, the only one of his that comes to mind is when he drops a beat in 'Passover' from the last JD concert, but I've listened to many a live tape of the band and it is my considered opinion that she makes far fewer mistakes than Hooky or Barney, and that's not counting the song endings that Hooky regularly butchers by playing his riff a few extra times.

yeah, but you could fill up a lot more than 90 minutes of Barney's or Hooky's gaffes. Why don't you name the show you know of with the most of what you consider to be Gillian's mistakes, and we'll count up everybody's mistakes on the tape of that show here on the thread to see who comes out on top ?
You're very protective of her ! I've got a classic Sooner Than You Think on the US 86 tour where you think she's playing a different tune, a brilliant (NOT) LWTUA that you will piss yourself over, a bodge-job on Atmosphere that is just cringeworthy.......
well, there you go then! the 90 minutes of screw-ups could be one of the discs in the box set!:D
well, first of all, if we started naming the more notable fukups from Barney and Hooky, it would take weeks; besides, just because there is a hack job on a keyboard doesn't necessarily mean it's her fault, she wasn't the only one playing them. For that reason it would be best to use a video for our little comparison. The only one I have is Taras Schevchenko but maybe somebody can hook me up if you have a video that you think is a good example of a bad night for G. I would need it to be NTSC VHS though. Perhaps a modest wager is in order.

It does mean she was the only one playing them on songs where Barney is playing guitar and doing vocals at the same time, Hooky is playing bass at the same time and Steve is drumming at the same time !

STYT sounded like she'd simply forgotten the synth part and was adding a note at the end of each bar. LWTUA was mangled beyond all comprehension, and Atmosphere....well, words fail me.

My recent experience of New Order in concert w/o Gillian shows me that they're able to butcher Atmosphere w/o her.
Gillian's ACE. stop being so tight. She looked well fit in an 80's sort of way when she was twidling them knobs at the start of the perfect kiss vid!
Plus on "play at home" that woman sat in a bath with Wilson naked!
You hear stories of bands doing anything to release records... but that really is above and beyond the call!
