Oh and i turned Atomic Blonde off after about half an hour, just found it all a bit meh.

I liked Atomic Blonde. A pretty good, stylish action flick. There's a pretty great fight that starts in a building and carries over into a car, IIRC. I'm a sucker for a good female action hero and Charlize Theron, with this performance and Fury Road (awesome film!), really fits the bill.

David Bowie's Cat People (Putting Out Fire) was released in 1982.The keyboard notes at the start are kind of similar to the keyboard notes at the start of Atmosphere (released of course in 1980).Was Bowie giving a nod to the JD song? And then after Bowie died in 2016 NO started using a sample of the intro to Cat People in their live version of Atmosphere in tribute to him and a cheeky "Yes David, we clocked that you gave a nod to Atmosphere at the start of Cat People" ???? I looked up Atmosphere live on the NOMC15 (2015) live disc and that intro wasn't used at that gig or that period.So they started incorporating the sample after Bowie's death in 2016?

I went back and listened to NOMC 2015 - couldn't hear it. Then I googled Alexandra Palace 2018, the last time I saw 'em live, and yep there it is:

Cat People sometimes turns up on my phone listening choices as part of a 2ManyDJ's mix (this one dedictated to drummer Keith Forsey who played on many famous artists/songs in the 70s & 80s). But it turns out the intro isn't in that DJ mix...

There are four of these 2x2 mixes from 2ManyDjs' that they did for Apple Beats1, I just used a youtube ripper to nab them all from the YT uploads for my phone. And now I've gone completely off topic.

Slightly back to the topic, Atomic Blonde was watchable but inessential. The kick-ass glamourous hit-woman thing has been done before (Nikita/ La Femme Nikita) and indeed done more recently (2019's Anna). But I like Charlize, and John Goodman (despite his real life politics), and plonking the story in the period immediately before the fall of the Berlin wall added something to it. Agree with Perpex Orange re: the action sequences too.

Strange thing is I could have sworn NO had used that slow bass drum thump on the Atmosphere live intro longer than recent years. I thought I’d heard it live at one of their gigs before Bluedot 2019. But I didn’t see them live between after November 2015 and Bluedot last year. So if I’d witnessed them doing that intro live before Bluedot it would have been before Bowie died in 2016. I guess I must have just heard it on YouTube or something in last couple of years if they didn’t start using it til after Bowie’s passing.

Yeah I think I agree with you Debaser about Atomic Blonde- watchable but not essential.Ill watch the rest of it one evening.

Collaboration with Iggy Pop. Incorporating Lou Reed’s Street Hassle into Temptation. Now incorporating Bowie’s Cat People into Atmosphere. They’ve successfully pinched from all the legends of 70s art rock! Ian would be proud.

I'm a Bowie fan and Cat People is a favourite (the original, not the Let's Dance LP re-recording) so noticed it straight away. I think it was noted on the Gigography or Setlist.fm at the time but can't be bothered to search it out.

They had also incorporated Iggy Pop's The Passenger into the intro of True Faith at that Irvine Meadows Substance gig in 1987...

Mind you, that Bowie Cat People video has credits right at the start: words and singing, Bowie; music: Georgio Moroder...

The Financial Times has an article today: "Blue Monday - NO's track was a watershed moment in British Pop". I could read it on my phone feed, but when I call it up on my PC it asks me to sign up to a subscription, so I haven't done a link. There's a free version that allows 3 articles a month.

Not so much spotting but more learning of a tenuous link between The Shamen and New Order that i hadn't known of before.The woman in the catsuit in The Shamen's Ebeneezer Goode video is the same woman as in NO's Spooky Video, Tamzin Haughton.Never ever made the connection.And never clocked it's the same director, Richard Heslop.The 2 videos have a similar fast forward speeded up style so that was obviously a technique the director was into at that time.I just never made the connection until now!

As I posted in the comments, it's interesting to note that, despite Hooky saying that 'Riverside' asked New Order for the interview, Andrews states in his introduction that the band contacted 'Riverside'. I tend to believe Hooky on this; I can't see New Order going out of their way to play the 'interview game' back in 1983.

I remember seeing the Shamen live at a student ball in the early 90s. At the time Plavka was a member of The Shamen and she wore a leather or PVC catsuit that night. You can see her in the Shamen's HyperReal video, where she doesn't look nearly as hot as she did that night (or at least as I remember it). She then went on to be part of Jam & Spoon's setup. Here she is doing Right In The Night with them. What's this got to do with NO? F*ck all really, although J&S did remix NO in '95. I just wanted to share an old w*nk bank memory!

PS The Shamen's music really hasn't aged very well.

PPS I still like J&S's Tripomatic Fairytales.

PPPS That speeded up video style in Spooky and Ebeneezer Goode was annoying.

Oh yes i remember Plavka being involved with The Shamen but not sure i remember her on that Jam & Spoon track.I mean, i remember the song and there being a female vocal on it but can't recall if i realised it was the same female that had been involved with The Shamen, or maybe i'd long forgotten.

I was into The Shamen around 90-91.Saw them live twice, both times at Coventry Polytechnic (Colin Angus was actually right by us in the Polytechnic bar pre gig on one of the occasions) Edit: the second time, the 1991 gig, was at Coventry Tik Tok club, not the Poly .First time was in 1990 around the time of their En-Tact album which i recall had some good stuff on.Second time was in 1991 when Mr C had become involved with them.Can't remember for sure now but i guess the first time i saw them in 1990 they must have had Plavka with them on stage.I definitely remember one of the gigs she was with them then.I guess the second time in 1991 she must have left and Mr bloody C was then on board.I don't think they'd written Ebeneezer Goode at the time i saw them in 91, that single came out in 1992.Went right off them with their Boss Drum album.Just thought the music went to shit with that album, though LSI was pretty good.Think i gave my CD of Boss Drum away to a mate who had got into them through Ebeneezer Goode.EG was just a fun novelty hit but i was done with them really around that time.Maybe when Will Sinnot died in summer 91 in that swimming accident it was the end of their innovative, forward looking music.But i do remember that 12" Land Of Oz remix of Move Any Mountain being pretty bloody good and i caned the track loud and a lot in the car around that time, summer 91.

Still have a few of their CDs and 12" singles, including HyperReal (Plavka looks pretty great in that vid!) .Never heard that Jam & Spoon Trypomatic Farytales album and yes those speeded up videos for The Shamen's Ebeneezer Goode and NO's Spooky were pretty naff.

I was slightly into The Shamen around the time of En:tact and my story is slightly NO related.

The first I heard of them was when I bought a VHS called ‘Indie Top Video (Take 4)’:

I basically bought this to see the video for Revenge’s ‘Pineapple Face’. The track right after that was ‘Pro-gen’ (Move Any Mountain) and I really liked it.

Not long after that, I bought ‘Volume One’ a CD / book combo that had an exclusive remix of ‘Confusion’ on it, along with an interview with NO:

The next track after ‘Confusion’? ‘Hyperreal’ by The Shamen. I liked that too, so went out and bought ‘En:tact’. I’d like to say I was bowled over by the LP but, to be honest, I wasn’t really. It wasn’t bad and I played it a bit. I still really liked those two tracks though (still do). By the time of the next LP, I was a little put off by them being the ‘next big thing’, but did rather like the title track of ‘Boss Drum’.

I remember when that Jam & Spoon ‘Ride In The Night’ song came out featuring the lovely Plavka and recognised the name from the credits of En:tact. I bought the song and the follow up which also featured her (‘Find Me’) which was pretty reasonable too, IIRC.

I remember the video to ‘Right In The Night’ and thought that Plavka looked rather splendid in it.

I listened to En-Tact at work yesterday. I really love it and all the associated singles.

I was doing the weekly dance music show for my college radio station at the time, and we were somehow given import copies. They weren’t commercially released over here until ‘91.

I’ve also got that CD magazine Volume One.

No, that’s just the book. There were a few for sale - I almost got one from eBay around 2005.

Yeah. What I meant was, someone has scanned each page from the book and then digitally 'flicked' them to show what it would be like if you were to actually flick the physical book (which, due to the ridiculous rarity of those books, few of us are ever likely to do).

I have a friend who has one, of which I'm insanely jealous.

Didn't Factory initially send these out as Christmas cards or something? If that's the case, there's a likelihood that quite a few of these ended up in the bin. Depressing thought, eh?

scanned each page of the book, and used scan tailor to crop, clean up, and color correct each page.

then assembled all the jpgs, into an animated GIF, then also created an AVI video for youtube, and added sound. not that hard.
